Oregon Metal Spotlight #6: Misery Whip (Portland, OR)

Some bands make metal.

Some bands sound like they crawled out of a fucking Oregon logging camp at 3AM with blood on their boots.

MISERY WHIP is the second kind. ☠️

Dirty. Heavy. Mean as hell. The kind of shit you throw on when you want your speakers to sound like they’re about to file a restraining order.

If you haven’t fucked with Misery Whip yet, consider this your warning:

TURN IT UP.

P.s — Thank you whoever recommended me this band.

I want to expand my music taste

I listen to mostly Thrash, Death, Hair and Traditional Heavy Metal, I also occasionally listen to Rap Metal, is there any bands I can listen to, I’m getting into Black Metal

AleStorM - 2014 - Sunset on the Golden Age - 1741 The Battle of Cartagena

AleStorM - 2014 - Sunset on the Golden Age - 1741 The Battle of Cartagena

Sailing the raging seas
To distant lands unknown
Porto Bello fell in a day
Now Britannia rules the waves
Thirty thousand men at arms
Red Ensign in the sky
To Cartagena we set sail
With blood and plunder we‘ll prevail
Twice struck, and twice we‘ve failed
But third time works a charm
The greatest fleet the world has seen
To fight the War of Jenkins‘ Ear
Waters lash across the bow
Through Caribbean Seas
The year is 1741
The final battle has begun
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
The sands of time will remember our names
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
History is written today
Across the sea-lashed deck
Our captain gives a cry
„Cartagena lies ahead
The Spanish foe will soon be dead!“
Portents of coming doom
Engulf the battle line
High above, the heavens sigh
A red light burning in the sky
An omen of dread
Which no man can deny
The legends hold true
We must turn back or die
Superstitious fools
Be gone from my sight
Blast the trumpets of war
And prepare for the fight
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
The sands of time will remember our names
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
History is written today
Hard to starboard
Man the cannons
And on my command, unleash hell!
FIRE! Show them your steel
Bring them to death on the battlefield
Ride on the wind, and conquer the foe
The legends be damned, to our deaths we will ago
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
The sands of time will remember our names
The skies are burning with thunder
The seas are ablaze with flame
Set the course for Cartagena
History is written today

RYM Greatest Albums Of All Time: #495 Iron Maiden-Somewhere In Time (1986)

Synopsis:

Somewhere in Time is the sixth  album by Iron Maiden . It was released on 29 September 1986  It was the band's first album to feature Guitar Synthesizers. Somewhere in Time is the band's first studio effort following the extensive World Slavery Tour of  1984–85, which was physically draining for the group, lasting 331 days and comprising 187 concerts. The resulting exhaustion is credited as the main factor in the complete lack of songwriting contributions from lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson  whose material was rejected by the rest of the band. Dickinson had written several "acoustic-based" songs, explaining that "I felt we had to come up with our Physical Graffiti or  ... we had to get it onto another level or we'd stagnate and drift away", although bassist and primary writer Steve Harris  "thought he'd lost the plot completely", surmising that "he was probably more burnt out than anyone at the end of that last tour". On the other hand, the record is also notable for the number of  songs written by guitarist Adrian Smith  who wrote both of the album's singles: "Wasted Years  and "Stranger In A Strange Land "

The Review

The album opens with “Caught Somewhere In Time” which begins with futuristic synths before the band come crashing in with their prog metal grooves. Filled with thump bass rhythms and the dual guitar attack of Smith and Dave Murray. The song written by Harris is about the devil offering a man to travel back in time for his soul establishing the sci-fi themes of the album rather than the historical contexts the band have been exploring on earlier albums. “Wasted Years” was the first Maiden song I ever heard and it is one of my favorites. I just love how melodic it sounds. The twin guitars are working hard on this one. The introduction reminds me of classic Sabbath. Dickinson’s vocals really soar. The song, written by Smith, deals with homesickness which was inspired by the draining World Slavery Tour. “Sea Of Madness” loses the melodic energy and is just an up-tempo prog rock track. This is just classic Maiden with some added broody energy. The song is about our decaying society. “Heaven Can Wait” is about someone having an out of body experience and fighting to live. It's a concert highlight with its upbeat sing a long chorus and a crowd chant in the middle. . There’s a couple great guitar moments as well. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" was based on the 1962 short story by Alan Stillitoe  and tells the story of a boy reflecting on long-distance running as a way to evade both physically and emotionally. Sonically it feels heavy and soaring as the band is playing at breakneck speed. “Stranger In A Stranger Land” begins with this thumping rhythms by Harris and Drummer Nicko McBrain. It has this mysterious atmospheric moodiness. The synthesizer experimentation is in full effect on the track but doesn’t distract from the heavy melodies. It was inspired by the true story of a sailor who disappeared during an expedition to the North Pole and found years later perfectly preserved in ice, and draws its title from a 1959 Robert Heinlein book. “Deju Vu” begins with moody guitar riffs before hitting hard with prog/metal melodies. The album closes with “Alexander The Great” is about the historical conquests of the ruthless ruler. The track matches the epic story with its many tempo and chord changes. It's a great closer and a reminder how technical and complex the band’s prog/metal grooves can be.

Final Thoughts:

This album was different in so many ways for the band. Both lyrically and sonically. The introduction of guitar synthesizers could have been a disaster but I think it gave the album a moodiness on some tracks. They were never overbearing but rather the band maintained  their heaviness. Iron Maiden has one of the best discoveries in the metalsphere. This album would be a good starting point for any Maiden deep dive

IRON MAIDEN - 1983 - Piece Of Mind - Quest For Fire

IRON MAIDEN - 1983 - Piece Of Mind - Quest For Fire

In a time when dinosaurs walked the earth

When the land was swamp and caves were home

In an age when prize Possession was fire

To search for landscapes men would roam.

Then the tribes they came to steal their fire

And the wolves they howled into the night

As they fought a vicious angry battle

to save the power of warmth and light.

Drawn by Quest For Fire

They searched all through the land

Drawn by Quest For Fire

Discovery of man.

And they thought that when the embers died away

That the flame of life had burnt and died

Didn't know the sparks that made the fire

Were made by rubbing stick and stone.

So they ploughed through forest and swamps of danger

And they fought the canN.I.B.al tribes and beasts

In the search to find another fire

To regain the power of life and heat.

Drawn by Quest For Fire

They searched acRoss the land

Drawn by Quest For Fire

Discovery of man.

Lordian Guard - Lost ArchAngel

Lordian Guard - 1995 - Woe To The Inhabitants Of The Earth - Lost ArchAngel

"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the

Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Woe unto the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! For the Devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time" (Revelation 12:9, 12)

The fallen one has come to rule,

From the holy skies.

Spreading wrath and razing ruin,

'Til the Second Coming of Christ.

The kings they kneel before his throne,

Veiled in scarlet robes.

And in his name their story's born,

And in his name they carve their stones.

The Adversary of the Lord,

He wields his famines and his wars.

The Adversary will be slain,

Christ the King will ever reign!

The Adversary of the Lord,

He seeks to devour, and he means to destroy your soul.

The Adversary, he will fall,

By the wrath of the everlasting God.

Billions of souls will perish in his fires,

In the endless day of the damned,

On the judgment day of man.

Woe to this world and the evils we have chosen,

By the pride and the will of man,

A kingdom built on sand . . .

The Adversary of the Lord,

He wields his famines and his wars.

The Adversary will be slain,

Christ the King will ever reign.

The Adversary of the Lord,

He seeks to devour, and he means to destroy your soul.

The Adversary, he will fall,

By the wrath of the everlasting God . . .

DevilDriver - End Of The Line

DevilDriver - 2005 - The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand - End Of The Line

I do declare, there's something in the air

I'm burning the candle at both ends

Bitter betrayals, skeleton keys

Houses to haunt, well it's alright by me

Rags to ruin, some foolhardy choices

Some would say, not a ghost of a chance

The ghosts in my mind, they're one of a kind

They tell me what to do, and it's shut down you

Some things are best just left unsaid

End Of The Line, End Of The Line

One door closes, another door closes

And now you're boxed in

End Of The Line, End Of The Line

Feel eyes in the trees, the foreboding path

The turn of the head, I hear it laugh

It says "Hang 'em now," it says "Hang 'em high"

When you are done, then hail to the sky

I've been taught to get the fuck up

To dust myself off, and to go it again

The ghosts in my mind, they're one of a kind

They tell me what to do, and it's shut down you

Some things are best just left unsaid

End Of The Line, End Of The Line

One door closes, another door closes

And now you're boxed in

End Of The Line, End Of The Line

Shit

Bitter betrayals, the foreboding path

I've come to shut you down

Rags to ruin, some foolhardy choices

Some would say, not a ghost of a chance

The ghosts in my mind, they're one of a kind

They tell me what to do, and it's shut down you

Some things are best just left unsaid

End Of The Line, End Of The Line

One door closes, another door closes

And now you're boxed in

End Of The Line, End Of The Line
