How to get that same dreamy look as The Substance

I'm working on a short film that is essentially a cannibal love story between cannibal and victim (based on a true story in Germany) and love the dreamy look and quality of The Substance. I'm pretty sure the glass used was the Leitz Thalia Primes and I would want to use a Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K (which I can get access to). I'm not sure if I will have time to do an actual lens test but have been looking around before committing. Has anyone used these lenses and are they worth it to get that look of The Substance? I saw this lens test and wondering if there are any others like it?

To everyone in Long Beach (the northern one). Bit of an unusual post but here goes.

I'm a filmmaker from Las Vegas and I just finished a twelve-year journey to complete my indie sci-fi thriller Abductee. Instead of going straight to streaming, I'm taking it on the road myself and showing it in person at independent theaters before it gets released. The Neptune in Long Beach off the coast is my first stop.

I want to be straight with you — I picked this theater before I knew much about the town. I was looking for small, independent venues for this tour and the Neptune came up. When I looked into it I understood why immediately. It's exactly the kind of place this film should play first.

The film is a psychological thriller about a man whose lifelong sleep paralysis convinces him something is coming for him at night, and what it does to his sister when she gets pulled into his world. It's quiet and unsettling rather than loud and explosive. Feels like the right fit for a room like that.

I'll be there in person on Monday May 11th. Doors at 6:30, film at 7:00, and I'll stick around for a Q&A after.

If you're into UFO or paranormal stuff, psychological sci-fi, or just enjoy catching something before the rest of the world does, this might be worth your Monday night.

Trailer is at AbducteeMovie.com if you want to check it out first.

Looking for a Male Lead for an Independent Student Short Film (Kolkata)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently working on an independent student short film and looking for a male lead actor for the project.

The film is a psychological musical drama, and the screenplay is largely male-centric, so the role requires someone who can carry a performance with emotional depth and psychological complexity. (Screen-age = Mid & late 20s)

This is a student project, but the shoot will be conducted professionally. Some industry professionals are supervising different parts of the process, and we’ll be shooting on equipment like the Sony FX3 with Sony G Master lenses.

Looking For:

Someone who:

1)Has some acting experience (theatre, short films, student films, workshops, etc.)

  1. Or is genuinely serious and passionate about acting/cinema

  2. Can handle an emotionally demanding role

Prior experience is preferred, mainly because this is a performance-heavy script and we need some confidence that the role can be pulled off well. But if you’re passionate and genuinely interested in acting, feel free to reach out as well.

Project Details:

2 workshops before shoot

2 shoot days

Guidance/support will be there throughout the process

Payment:

Being transparent from the beginning — this is a limited-budget independent project, so the compensation is modest (around ₹2,000 for the whole project).

That said, we’re seriously planning to take the film to national and international film festivals, along with post-release marketing/promotion.

Netflix: The Epstein Island of Cinema.

cinema is a private club and you aren't invited. stop lying to yourself that talent matters in a system run by a corporate syndicate. these big production houses would rather let their high-end gear rot in a warehouse than let an indie filmmaker touch it for a day. it is pure gatekeeping and it’s pathetic. they don't want art they want a monopoly on who gets to speak.

and honestly netflix is the worst of the bunch. they don't support art they strip-mine it. they’re like the epstein island of the creative world—a place where dreams and original ideas go to be exploited and discarded by a bunch of sick, money-hungry suits who think they own human expression. they’ll reject a regional masterpiece without even watching it just because the algorithm didn't get a hard-on for the data. it’s a direct attack on the soul of storytelling.

it’s disgusting how many masterpieces are sitting on dead hard drives right now just because some ceo decided a story wasn’t marketable enough. they’ve turned cinema into a rigged game where the elite stay on top and the rest of us are left begging for scraps. they don't love the craft they love the control. we are making real art while they are just guarding a dying throne. the system isn't broken it was built to keep us out and it’s time we stopped playing nice with the people killing our industry.

Are you an indie filmmaker who released a feature in 2023-2025? I need to interview you for school!

Hi, I’m an MFA student at UCLA film school who needs to interview an indie filmmaker for an assignment in my Indie Producing class. I’ve emailed a bunch of people so far and no one wants to talk to me, so I’m reaching out to Reddit to see if anyone is available.

It would be a zoom or phone interview prior to May 29th — but I’m flexible, however please know the paper/presentation is due June 4th.

Basically, we would go over the process of how the film was made and financed.

Criteria for this assignment:
- Your film should have had theatrical distribution, but a teeny tiny limited release still totally counts. (Even one single theater!)
- You can be from any country but your film should have screened in the US at some point.
- I love horror and sci-fi the most, but I’m down to talk about literally anything. Also, if you’re a creator with a marginalized background or have a film with a unique cultural story, please don’t be afraid to reach out!

The benefits to yourself:

  1. I will watch your film before our interview
  2. Free advertising for your film with a bunch of college kids who love films, and may also watch your film after I present my report
  3. Our professor is an actual producer who works in the industry and he may also watch your film

Please help me or I’m gonna bomb my easy A filler class 🙏😭 Thank you!!

Hey everyone, I recently shot this psychological thriller locally with my crew at Silent Frame Production. We tried to build as much tension and paranoia as possible with limited gear. Let me know what you think of the vibe and the editing!

You can watch the full 5-minute short film here: https://youtu.be/71avFctPd30

Feedback wanted on my independent dark fantasy trailer — All Wars Are Inevitable - The Beginning

Hi everyone,

I’m working on an independent dark fantasy film called All Wars Are Inevitable: The Beginning.

I’m creating it mostly by myself: directing, editing, composing the music, building the world, and developing the visual identity with AI tools as part of the workflow.

This is not just a random trailer test — I’m trying to build a full cinematic saga with consistent characters, lore, factions, and an original score.

I’d really appreciate honest feedback on the trailer: pacing, atmosphere, clarity, and whether it feels like something you would keep watching.

Thanks.
