Can someone explain to me why these particular writers are so popular?
As someone who enjoys reading explicit and mature stories, I spend a lot of time on AO3.
The content there is better and more interesting than what you’d find in the local bookstores.
With the renaissance of ATLA, due the movie (I liked the show as a young teenager), I started looking for Kataang fanfiction. I really enjoy the ‘ship’, although I’ve never been a shipper of any ATLA or TLOK characters before.
What came to my attention is that blueseyethinker (think they appear under different names on different platform) and pardonmymanners became insanely popular, despite also being new to the fandom as it seems.
As far as I'm concerned AO3 doesn't get writers famous like this often.
I’ve read some of their fics and they are without doubt, very enjoyable, but not to an extent that explains to me why they are this popular.
Are such rises in popularity an ATLA-fandom thing or can someone explain what's so special about their work. Is there insider knowledge I need to enjoy their work as much as the rest of the community?
And do you might have other recommendations for explicit Kataang other than these two authors?
(already read most of aangsheadband’s and Flameohotwife’s stuff too)
Smaller fics that did not gain as much recognition but you still liked?
Thanks a lot.
what was your reaction to the balcony scene?
I remember when the leaks came out and the balcony scene was the first thing i saw on my fyp. i was so shocked. like, this much intimacy? in my avatar? for kataang? the most i expected was a passionate kiss scene equivalent to the end of ATLA. i don’t even think TLOK had intimacy at this level. and this was supposed to play in theatres too.
anyway, after the movie officially came out and i got to watch it with family and friends, they also felt like they were intruding while watching this scene 😭

One of the most beautiful pieces I've seen 😍
kataang is now the most popular canon ship in atla (and across the franchise)
i distinctly recall when this poll was made a couple of years ago (maybe sometime in 2021?) sokka and suki were in the lead. it’s so interesting to see how demographics change with time. of course the movie certainly helped. i do wonder if the shift came with the movie or if people just started appreciating kataang more.
it’s funny because natla has done everything in it’s power to erase kataang but it’s only gotten even more popular despite their (ineffective) efforts.
if you told me, an og kataang fan in 2008, that kataang would get the overwhelmingly majority of votes in 2026, i wouldn’t have believed you.

Why I Cannot ship Kataang
Let’s just call it what it is. Katara doesn’t love Aang. She needs him. She needs him the way a girl with unresolved daddy issues needs a warm glowing body to project every fantasy, stability, and spiritual validation onto. In “The Awakening” Aang is literally trying to shoulder the weight of a war that has been won by the Fire Nation. And she has a full emotional collapse because his choices aren’t revolving around her feelings. He thanks her for healing him and heads off. She answers by making his duty about her feelings while projecting and mixing it all into anger at him and her father because of her abandonment issues. 🤢
She’s possessive to a a degree the show never once questions. Unsolicited kisses, constant physical claiming. Jealousy over Onji. Hounding over “What Girl!?” did he see in the swamp. Jealousy over Kyoshi Island girls-Actual children just happy to meet their hero. If your “true love” arc requires treating preteens as romantic threats the relationship is already pathological. The writers framed this as endearing and cute. It is NOT. It is textbook controlling behavior given a free pass because she is the designated heroine.
This grooming pattern is evident within the entire narrative. Katara molds Aang into the protector Hakoda failed to be and the Strong Male Figure she never go to keep. He spends the entire series trying to save everyone the way she always wished Hakoda had saved her Mother. Then she extracts three children from him until she finally gets the exotic Air Nomad Baby that lets her live out the fantasy she absorbed from Gran Gran’s Stories. The same fantasy she was already half-writing in her head the day she cracked open that iceberg. Aang doesn’t get a partner. He gets turnt into a lifelong project and a breeding program.
Azula never did any of this.
She looked at Aang and saw an equal. A fellow powerful bender. A genuine threat. Two prodigies forged by opposite systems into weapons, both carrying the weight of legacies of rival nations. Fire-Air. Order and Harmony, Control and Chaos. The Yin-Yang was right there. The cave of two lovers was practically begging to be the thematic blueprint for an opposing side enemy-lover reconciliation that meant something.
Instead the show gave us the safest, most generic (“Nice girl gets the boy as a prize for being good”) trope arc imaginable. The kind of story that reeks of a writer like Elizabeth Ehasz self-inserting her own, unresolved feelings and fantasies and teaching a generation of Teenage Girls that if you’re relentless and emotionally charged enough! The boy of destiny will eventually stop choosing the world and choose you!
Aang is never allowed a single other crush. Not One. The narrative locks every door and forces him into a relationship that is treated as his duty rather then desire. He dies early and is separated from all his friends, and is remembered as a seed dispenser for a nation he can never see. Then the cycle starts again: he has to meet her in the next life as an Old Woman still carrying decades old trauma she can dump onto a Seventeen year old and force her into the next role as the worlds protector and “her hero”. And is supposed to echo the idea of “Friendships Lasting more then one lifetime” When the truth is this friendship was never a friendship but entirely one sided emotional manipulation.

Katara as an air nomad womb
Do people really think that little yellow ribbon means katara is the air nations womb? Katara? Equal rights let me fight, katara? Ain’t no way
Lyralocke Parlor Tricks comics, Help Me Please
Where's the comics?
I don't know if I was hallucinating for the past decade. But I could've sworn that Parlor Tricks from FanFiction.Net by the absolute legend Lyralocke had a few pages of comics for the cover and chapter 1 in Deviantart. But all I can find are 2 pages of thumbnail panels.
I used to use the cover as my lockscreen. A black and white charcoal drawing of an Ace of Spades card with a text at the bottom saying "swipe left".
Is it real? Can anyone find it or have it? Or am I hallucinating?
looks like the orders got mixed up by aisatsaa
lauren montgomery (avatar aang movie director) basically confirms that aang’s beads are intended to match katara’s hair loopies
keep seeing people say that the beads on his necklace are meant to represent his tattoos and not katara but can we be serious. the ONLY 3 beads he wears are conveniently blue and look exactly like her beads? anyway, she liked this post on Instagram.
