The math is not mathing

We recently made an update to our renovation calculator. You can still manually calculate the cost of a renovation in Ireland, but now you can also use AI Snapshot to pull the data for you. You just have to paste a URL from MyHome.ie or Sherry Fitzgerald or other agents (except daft 😔) or upload a photo of a kitchen or bathroom. My thinking was if I am at a home viewing to buy it can give me a quick sense of how much it could cost.

I'd love for you guys to check it out and let me know what you think! Any feedback is welcomed.

But also, I built this because I'm in the market for a home and every other house needs a renovation. Now that I actually know the costs, the math is just not mathing? Are people out there genuinely doing full renovations and just paying the extra cost? Or is everyone just... not doing them? If you did do a full reno, was it worth it?

Curious to know!

Thanks!

Looking for 2 housemates

Hi everyone,

Myself and a few friends are currently on the look for a place for the 26/27 academic year and MIGHT have found a 5 bedroom house in Hazelwood, Castletroy. 3 of us are international students and one of us is Irish. Myself and my girlfriend would be ready to share a bedroom so we need 2 more people to fill the house. I do want to disclose that I found the offer on Facebook but I've texted with the landlord, have his Whatsapp and he sent me a voice note saying that he's willing to do an online viewing with us cause we're all home for summer now. If there's anyone that would be down for it, please leave a comment or something, or text me on ig @ karim_jyy. We're looking for nice and clean housemates cause we've all had a horrendous experience hygiene and cleaning wise during our first year so that's a big point.

Thank you!

Are new houses over engineered and I turn making them too expensive?

I sometimes wonder about new houses. "Yes" they are so much more efficient than houses built even as recently at 20 years ago but are our new and very expensive, regulation "A" rated houses really needed in a time when we have a serious housing crisis? Surely we could do with lowering the regulations so as to produce cheaper houses in these times.

I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Mechanic recommendations in Limerick

Hey guys, I failed my NCT today because my car has worn break drums in the near side/ rear, and my TPMS light won’t come off despite the fact my tires are a perfect pressure. So I have to get these things fixed.

If anyone has any recommendations for mechanics in Limerick that are good for these (and don’t cost an arm and a leg) I would really appreciate it😊

Also if anyone has any idea how much these cost because I’ve no clue ahahahaha

False advertising?!

Hi all. Maybe I’m madly PMS-ing and sad but please tell me if I’m right here. I ordered a Nutella crepe and that was sold for nearly 10€ (with extra Nutella for 1.20€) and what arrived was a cheap looking chocolate sauce that tasted nothing like Nutella and was definitely not it. I’ve ordered from this place before in person and it was made in front of me with Nutella so I’m just very disappointed- can I do anything aside from ring them tomorrow and try get my money back? ( too late by the time I realised) Deliveroo wouldn’t compensate me. But this is false advertising right?? ☹️

Hurling

Hello,
I am an international student from Germany and on my last stretch before going back home. However, I never played Hurling in the whole time that I have been here. I would say, that I am doing quite well with sports in general and would like to try hurling at least once before I move back, as I highly enjoy watching it.
If someone would be open to teach/show me the basics of it I would be very grateful.

The state spends €2.5bn on asylum systems while private contractors sue to protect profits. Domestic homelessness gets just €563m. The math is a scandal.

I want to point out a massive contradiction in how public money is handled here, speaking from brutal personal experience.

I have 3rd level degrees and years work experience but severe mental health struggles have completely derailed my life and I’ve been homeless multiple times. Domestic state "support" usually means the local council handing you a canvas tent and a sleeping bag on a freezing night. If you manage to get a hostel bed in SVDP for example, you are packed onto a floor with other men, or put in filthy single rooms covered in bloodstains and everything else you can imagine. If you try to get long-term disability for a mental health condition in Ireland, the barriers are so high it’s practically impossible. On a medical card, you wait 5 months just to see a psychiatrist's assistant. You don't even get to speak to the psychiatrist anymore. Just a periodical review of medication and that's it.

Yet, look at the parallel system the Irish government and NGOs have built for International Protection Applicants coming to Ireland.

Did anyone see the recent news that private asylum housing providers are actually suing the State over reduced demand for their services? It is a flat-out lucrative business. Recent PAC figures reveal the state spent €1.6 billion purely on private accommodation contracts last year. When you add automatic medical cards, legal aid, and weekly cash, the total multi-departmental cost is between €2 - €2.5 billion.

I’ve seen exactly where this goes firsthand here in my city using a local hotel pool and jacuzzi which is heavily occupied by state-funded residents receiving catered meals and daily cleaning. If other IPAS centres have tough conditions, compared to being handed a canvas tent on a street corner, a 4 star hotel setup is golden.

But it goes way beyond the hotels. On top of billions in tax money, there is a huge network of state-funded NGOs providing further supports. Arrivals have access to ring fenced charity schemes including entertainment vouchers, smartphones, laptops. They also have access to fast tracked university scholarships.

By contrast, the entire national budget allocated to domestic homelessness for Irish and EU citizens is just €563 million.

The state and its NGO apparatus spend FOUR times more funding private hotel contracts and secondary systems for arrivals than it allocates to its entire homeless/sick population. Private companies are literally taking the State to court to protect their massive profits, while the Irish government allows its own vulnerable citizens broken by homelessness, addiction and mental health issues to rot on the street.

This isn't anti-immigration, it’s anti-disproportionality. The funding priorities in Ireland are completely skewed.

EDIT: I CANNOT RESPOND TO EVERYONE. IT IS NOT DIFFICULT AT ALL TO VERIFY THESE FIGURES YOURSELF WITH GOOGLE OR CHATGPT SO PLEASE DO IT YOURSELF OR DON'T BOTHER AND STOP DEBATING.

What's the story with the 310?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I was wondering what the story is with the 310 bus. Timetable says it's meant to go from UL to the Castletroy SC and out to Monaleen, but it seems to just turn right at UL East Gate and head straight for Groody.

Allen’s in upper William street beside deals has the most unprofessional staff.

Was in there earlier this month and must say I’ve never felt so disrespected in my life. I’ve been a customer for years and the new chap in there seems to have a stick wedged up his arse or something. Very very cheeky asked for a specific picture and was made a fool of when I had seen it the previous week. Will no to be going again I’d strongly recommend the range or jysk to anyone looking better offers and better selection and most importantly better staff

Avoid Leevin Ireland : Illegal fine threats, ghosting on complaints, and a nightmare refund process

If you are an international student or a professional moving to Limerick or Dublin, stay away from Leevin Ireland (formerly GL Accommodation). They are a Brazilian-owned company that specifically targets international students and working professionals. I just went through an incredibly frustrating, hectic exit process to get my deposit back, and you need to know how they operate:

Ghosting on Complaints: If you ever raise a legitimate complaint about the house or maintenance issues, they completely ignore you. You get absolutely no replies back for weeks they just ghost you until you give up.

The Housemate Trap: They refused to process my replacement tenant until every single housemate stopped working to email the office, state their deposit share, and attach physical photos of their own bedrooms.

4:55 PM Delay Tactics: They intentionally slow-roll communication. They email you minor, useless questions (like asking for a "room number" in a standard residential house that doesn't have numbers) at the very end of the business day just to reset their response clock.

Illegal Fine Threats: They sent aggressive notices threatening arbitrary financial "penalties" if I wasn't home for an inspection. I locked in a 12 PM – 2 PM window, but the inspector showed up at 5 PM anyway, admitting the company never told him the timings because he was brand new.

The "Licence" Legal Bluff: When asked for an RTB number for my tax credits, they sent a corporate script claiming they use "licence agreements" and are exempt from the Residential Tenancies Act. I checked our Eircode on the official RTB Public Register the house is completely unregistered and operating illegally.

Lengthy Refund Process: Even though my replacement approved his documents, passed the inspection, and paid his deposit weeks ago, Leevin refuses to release my cash until 14 working days after my official move-out date at the end of the month.

They actively rely on international arrivals being unfamiliar with Irish housing laws to exploit them and hold deposits hostage. Stand your ground, get everything in writing, check the RTB register, and avoid Leevin Home at all costs.
