Which of the gang (+Zenigata) do you think would actually try to avenge him?
on TMS‘ YouTube channel. it was teased that a possible third Lupin vs Detective Conan crossover special is coming with the Morse code in the image translating to: “L 3 V S D C TV SP 20260525” which could mean May 25th is the day when this could be announced.
And i mean full outfit, not just jacket color.
What would everyone here think if TMS were to make a hypothetical Part 7 which takes place in the United States?
What unique elements does America have (strange laws, cultural differences, etc.) that would create good obstacles for the gang?
What kind of game and genre? Something more story-focused? What kind of mechanics? 3D, 2D, pixel? Personally I'd love a pixel game with a lot of puzzles - maybe something like the gang getting stuck somewhere during a job and having to do puzzles to progress the game. Or a shooter game, maybe focusing on Jigen? Basically one of their heists, but as a game, and I'm happy. Would be interesting to see them getting up to other shenanigans too though. I've been meaning to get back into the game dev scene for a while but lack ideas, and since Lupin has been one of my interests in rotation lately, it seemed like a good idea to make a fangame and that's why I'm asking here.
The police car Chase was perfect Lupin for me.
It was hilarious, destructive, and the continuity in the Chase was so detailed. Zenigata really pursues him to the ends of the Earth.
Also, I felt the fights were pretty well animated, and I’m really happy that Goeman found a challenge.
I have never really been disappointed with Lupin the 3rd, and I haven’t started now.
I was scrolling through the subreddit today for 60,861,775th time this week and I found u/Endway20 asking why I keep watching the series, and honestly all I could really think to answer with was my ADHD based hyper fixation, the characters, and music.
I answered and said those two things and I started thinking about something that made me write this post and honestly might make me write about it deeper somewhere else.
The 5 main characters have managed to evolve and keep their same spirit without compromising them or feeling inauthentic and they’ve managed to be enjoyed since 1977, and that’s such an insane feet, especially given the character archetypes they have.
I mean, think about it: Lupin used to be a self centered, womanizing thief who steals because he thinks it’s fun. He’s like the typical trickster kind of guy, and the thing is HE STILL IS ALL OF THAT, but now the writers will take traits of the character that don’t age well and ask “how can we modernize and make this work” instead of just taking the trait out.
In the past, Lupin would LITERALLY lose his mind around a pretty girl, but now he flirts childishly and safely around them, while appreciating them for more than just their looks. He still likes them a lot more than you probably should😂 so instead of getting rid of it or toning it down, they just expressed it in as healthy of a way as possible while keeping the essence of the character the same. Instead of stealing irreverently, he more blatantly takes from people that are involved in worse things, and in Part IV, a lot of his heist are just clever money making schemes that isn’t really robbing.
Jigen is a huge example. He’s a man’s man that likes guns, and has had a past with a misogynistic reputation. While I’m not going to name names, let’s just say…it would be VERY EASY to line someone like him up with certain belief systems. So how do they modernize this? They put all his women mistrust on Fujiko (which idk if it’s better but she makes it understandable😅), they’ve given him examples of loving and respecting women in the past (Goodbye Partner, Part IV a bit and Part VI heavily as three examples), and frames his gun liking as something he’s bonded with through tough times and more of an old friend that keeps him grounded in this crazy world. He’s masculine without being offensive, and I cannot understate how RARE, WELCOME, and INSANELY INCREDIBLE that is to have someone who is a man’s man and not…(insert one of the many examples you’re thinking of here😂)
Shoutouts to Goemon. A king 👑. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’d be really easy for modern riders to make him no personality in all strength, so they use that by showing how uncomfortable and naïve is about modern times, while still affecting people with his wisdom and refined values. Very good, very good.
Fujiko 😬😬👀😂😅…well…
…so…the thing is…has anyone noticed that since Part IV, she really doesn’t betray the crew? Back in the day, everyone knew it was coming, but now she treats them as begrudging found family. In Part IV, Lupin sipping over her in a bar like he usually is, and what does she make him do with it? She makes him take her out on a date. A DATE. Obviously in Part V, they end up restating the love they have and their dynamic, and every single entry after that (except for that one in The First), she is notably SO MUCH MORE kind to Lupin and less using of him. They barely flirt in Goodbye Partner, barely flirts in Prison of the Past despite having a WHOLE SEQUENCE with just them, and in Part VI I low-key feel like they’re a couple 🤷🏿♂️he’s taking her out, they’re eating together, she even tells him to “be careful” before a heist I mean who is this lady?! oh man she has a friend outside of the group now, which is impressive because it shows that she’s capable of relationships.
Come to think of it, she’s always focused the brunt of her emotional and financial manipulation on wealthy and super horny and corrupt businessmen to mooch off of them because she knows they won’t say no to her, and at least half of them are very aware that she’s just doing it for the money and benefits, which kind of makes me think about her non gang related betrayals under a new light when you consider that a lot of times everyone knows what she’s there four and they just give it to her anyway. Obviously, there are a lot of examples where she just straight up targets, an innocent person, but those are a lot less common now, and you can tell that she even is starting to care about innocent more.
Zenigata is super impressive because he’s a cop, and anyone who knows American sentiments with cops can tell you…*breaths deeply and moves on*… so it’s incredible that he’s really well wiped, because the series goes out of its way to show that he is one of the most morally upright people (except when he isn’t, but in those the gang is deliberately drawn in their original way as an homage art piece, and EVEN THEN Koike Zenigata is such a good person) and he genuinely cares about people in a way that is obvious to even normal citizens.
Even when all five of these guys were at the worst that they could be back in the day, I think the series was smart because ALL of them would usually get karma coming back against them, and the series forced them to interact all the time, despite having radically different views about each other, which forced them into a situation where they have to get along and tolerate.
I know that this post is long AF, and I pointed touches on things that get unnecessarily grass touchy, but I hope I got across that point that even with those elements, the characterization of these five can really shine even in modern times and still remain who they are fundamentally. At least, that’s what I think.
It doesn't have to be Part VII. I'll take anything atp. I'm starved for new Lupin content.
I've been slowing down on watching lupin content, not sure if I'm too busy or if I'm just burntout/bored of it, it's not out of the question because there is alot to this series and it does get repetitive and the story can get bad at times or confusing (I think we all know what im referring to). I also get that of course I dont have to watch everything and it's completely okay skipping some stuff but as a fan and a perfectionist I have to keep that watchlist full of checkmarks.
So, that leads me to wonder why do you watch this wonderful series Lupin The 3rd? Is it the crime and action, the characters and their charms, or do you watch because it's so diverse genre wise, and it has almost anything for any mood?
Lupin was always a constant in my life, I grow up watching lupin in my early day with my dad, all the film, all the series and wow, every time I see new lupin content I got exited, I recently watch some of the movie with a close friend of mine and it bring back the passion for the series, I truly want all the best for this serie <3
In another thread I saw that there was some speculation about what possible new Lupin Discotek titles we could get this year, if any, or if there might be any upcoming redubs. I know that not every fan cares about dubs, but they do serve as an easy entry point for a lot of casuals. As someone with dyslexia, they also serve as an accessibility option that makes enjoying the series a lot easier.
This got me thinking, and I observed that since 2016, we've gotten a pretty steady flow of new Lupin English dubs, a lot that were released first by Discotek. Discotek always seems to be working on something Lupin. I have heard Discotek mention, during their panel discussions, that not every new dub is funded stateside and that actually a few movies and the Part 1 dub were funded by Japan through some cultural exchange fund or something like that.
To recap, I decided to make a list for myself to see how many dubs Discotek has released over the years and it's a lot, like half of the whole franchise:
2016 - Jigen's Gravestone
2018 - Part IV
2018 - The Legend of the Gold of Babylon
2019 - Goemon's Bloodspray
2019 - Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid
2020 - Fujiko Mine's Lie
2020 - Goodbye Partner
2021 - Part V + Is Lupin Still Burning
2021 - Lupin VS Conan Movie
2022 - Prison of the Past
2022 - Part I
2022 - Episode 0: First Contact
2022 - Lupin VS Conan Special
2025 - Castle of Cagliostro
Now let's speculate on what might still be in store for English-dubbed Lupin in 2026.
I think as far as Discotek is concerned, all of the TV specials that they were interested in dubbing are done, especially now that we are getting the TV Specials collection sets. I think it's unlikely for a new dub to be released in one of those sets.
Discotek has made it clear that while there is a lot of fan demand for a completion of Part 2 or a complete Part 3 dub, it would be too expensive for them to produce. The only reason even Part 1, which is much shorter than 2 or 3, happened was because it was outsider funded. I just don't see Parts 2 or 3 happening. While the length of those series prevents them from getting the full dub treatment, something short like Lupin Zero has a much better shot. When Lupin Zero was released in English-speaking territories it was actually Sentai Filmworks that handled the distribution. For whatever reason they didn't opt to give it an English dub, a truly bizarre exclusion. It's been a few years now and I think it's possible the license has lapsed, and could be up for grabs. It's a short 6 episodes, which I think could be easily dubbed and released by Discotek.
This is the one place I see a couple of good opportunities for a new English Dub. I think one of the OVAs that is at the top of mind for most fans would be a ReDub of The Fuma Conspiracy. I've recently watched this english dub, and while it's not the worst thing I've ever heard, its audio mixing seems uneven and sloppy. It's also now one of few a titles Discotek has never released on blu-ray, despite releasing a DVD, and their DVD run is over a decade out of print. I heard there might be some licensing issues for that title but I have a hard time believing it's something that Discotek can't work out, considering they already have in the past. I think that new dub or not The Fuma Conspiracy is likely to release on blu-ray soon, but I heavily lean toward there being a new dub on that disc.
The other OVA which is also due for a Blu-ray release would be Green vs. Red. It's another title that Discotek released on DVD ages ago, in 2013, that I could see getting an English dub on a shiny new Blu-ray Disc. Unlike The Fuma Conspiracy, this has never had an English dub. Truthfully, I would have thought we would have gotten this title on Blu-ray by now. I've been speculating that they might do something interesting with this OVA by casting two actors to play the different Lupins. I understand that the original Japanese Dub used a completely new voice actor for yasuo, but how exciting would it be to have, say, Tony Oliver voice Red and Sonny Strait voicing Green? But what do I know? I thought they would have gotten Tony or Sonny to voice the fake Lupin in Zenigata and the 2 Lupins, but they got someone new instead. Although that was more in line with how the original OVA handled that Fake Lupin. I strongly believe this will also be released on blu-ray soon.
Speaking of the Lupin the IIIRD OVA series, Zenigata and the 2 Lupins is likely coming within the next year from Discotek although that won't exactly be a new dub from Discotek, as it has already been released on VOD platforms. I guess it's still true that it will be released on blu-ray first by Discotek. The Immortal Bloodline Movie already has a pre-order up by GKIDS. GKIDS usually does good blu-ray releases but I hope they let the license lapse and discotek re-releases it eventually, y'know for that blu-ray spine continuity.
I just laid out all the titles I think are likely to get a standard normal blu-ray release, but there is a wild card possibility I wanted to highlight. Discotek experimented with a Fan Disc for the series Reborn!, where they dubbed a collection of fan-favorite episodes. I think it's possible that they put together a Fan Disc for Lupin part 2 that collects 4-8 fan favorite episodes that never received an English-language dub. If such a disc were made I think it's possible they would take the opportunity to redub the two Miyazaki-directed episodes to match the same cast as the newly redubbed Castle of Cagliostro.
We really are coming to the end of an era for new Lupin dubs from Discotek, but like Lupin himself Discotek also always seems to have one more thing up their sleeve.
Or would they be barred from doing so? Do you think it would succeed if they could?
So this is kind of random thought, but I realized the way Ami's origin is handled Part 5 makes me hesitant to actually recommend it. I think it was a bit tasteless and done for shock value, but also just is gross with the some small bit in the first 3 episodes. But what's your thoughts, is Ami Part 5's deal breaker
Lupin was so shook but also had to protect his baddie😅the life of a thief is tough smh
I’m kind struggling with this one because he has mostly every qualification to be a himbo except for the not smart part of it, i mean he’s definitely clumsy but he’s definitely far from dumb.
