Ineffective Workplace Conditions

I was hired by Mercor a couple weeks back. After going through their onboard (which had errors in the documentation in regards to where to look as well as ineffective direction as to what to do), I was able to gain access to all the necessary sites to be able to do the work. This is what I have encountered:

  • Access to a site where work was being assigned was told that it would take up to seven days for access but was also told that I needed to complete assessment screeners within a 24 hour timeframe
  • Access to the site was granted but directions in the onboarding were very unclear so it was very difficult to find the actual location of where work was found
  • The Queue, which they use to assign the work, is always full regardless of the time of day. The assessment screeners were behind the queue.
  • You were required to get a mark above 80% in order to access more work. You are not shown a mark for the work you did do.
  • You are not told, and have been told that you will not be told, if you work is above 80%. We are simply told to keep trying the queue.
  • There are 43000 people available and only ~300 spots on the queue - a statistical rate of 0.7% chance of getting on to the queue if everyone was looking
  • Identified that you will be tracked for time. I spent significant time on the onboarding to make sure I was aware of the requirements. I have been shorted about 30 minutes of time.
  • We are told that you need to complete 10 hours of work minimum weekly otherwise you will be offboarded. I have tried for several days to get on the queue. Nothing. So you sit waiting to get on a queue that you have less that a 1% chance on getting and won't get paid for that time waiting.

Looks to me like I have been scammed with a job offer that was too good to be true. On to other ventures then as I await being offboarded.

Is AI training money train over?

OpenAI just announced they are running out of money to pay humans for data training

‘…the pause would be taking place on "reinforcement learning training on our latest models".

This is a training method in which AI models improve through direct feedback, which improves their ability to carry out tasks and respond to users more effectively.’

offboarded after 7 days, 22 tasks on project. Anyone else? This message indicate I did something wrong? I felt my tasks were great. Sucks.

Pay per task is wage theft

Been working as an engineering expert on a pay per task project and it seems impossible to actually get a task approved. In the month I've been on the project only 7 tasks have been approved for the team in total. Each week they change the project rules, add another quality check, a new field to fill out, or a new model version to run against so even if you make changes from your reviewer everything has to be run again against an ever-changing goalpost. The project is advertised as get paid this crazy rate every week, but if the task actually takes 1.5 months the payout is less than minimum wage in my state. I thought I could come here to see if anyone else was struggling with this but the page seems to be overrun with pro-Mercor bots bragging about how much money they're making. I've never been scammed like this it's so humiliating and degrading. This has to be intentional right?

Experts on project have never worked in field of expertise?

Hey,

So I’m an expert on a project specialized in working for, let’s call it… hedge funds.

So I worked at an investment bank. I did my 100 hour weeks in banking. I worked in PE, and did my 110 hour weeks there.

So I was excited to join a “hedge funds” project. But the reviewers talk out of their ass and so I got to thinking hmm what bank did they start at or did they even do buyouts? Never made it out of banking? Even worse, special credit? Jk, kinda.

Anyways, turns out that maybe 5% of people I looked into on LinkedIn were ever even working in a “hedge funds” adjacent role, like actual investment banking (not a middle office/back office risk analyst). But most never even worked in roles even remotely close to private equity.

Can someone please explain to me how this is not fraud? Or explain that I’m wrong and the word expert is just illustrative window dressing that’s better understood as “worked in like business or tech or something”? What’s up with this?

Contract Offer From Mercor

Opened my Gmail tonight and while scrolling through the junk, found a contract offer from Mercor for $70/hour! It said that though I hadn’t applied for the role, it took my skills from other applications and matched me.

I’d finally done an AI interview with them Sunday night, not really expecting much. But to my delight and surprise, this came through today. I signed the contract, verified my ID, and am waiting on the background check. The project might be short term but at least I’ll have my foot in. I’ve done a one-time $30 task there in the past.

Any tips from current or former Mercor workers? I started to read the onboarding and it told me to log those hours while I went through it — shocking! I’m used to not being paid for training.

I hope everyone is having a blessed week.

Onboarding gone wrong

I didn’t know I could get paid for reading the mercor onboarding, I read the first page and click complete then later realised there is a one shot guide and was advised to setup my insight.

Has anyone made such mistake before and how did you resolve it to get the timer working - as I can see my insightful app active but can’t click on any timer

Ps I am still waiting for my background checks.

Can I contact admins or let it go???

There Are All Kinds of New Openings at Mercor!

Hi, I'm R.C. I'm a Video Game writer at Mercor. If you need help finding a role right in your niche and aligned with your unique interests, hobbies, and strengths, let me do the heavy lifting and find you a role, and possibly mention you on Slack if I see someone in computational biology, for example. Let me know you're SME areas or if you just want a generalist, a writer-related role, or audio and video based-tasking. IF you are a video CREATOR of any kind, let me know your strengths in specific programs. And no, I'm not a scammer. Just a disabled worker who cannot task a full 40 hour week. I refer to make up for that. I have severe scoliosis and cannot work more than 20 hours a week. Anywhere. They're looking a lot for people who can CREATE video content with all that fancy software like Final Cut Pro and stuff. These positions really pay. You can look them up on the job board yourself or use my link and I'll give you some handy tips!

Frontend Engineer gig - Do you want someone to vouch for you?

This seems to be an interesting gig for Frontend Engineers.

Profiles that are vouched have a better chance of moving up. DM and we can connect if you want someone to vouch for you.

How long did you work before you got offboarded? (Generalist)

I just started working with mercor 3 days ago and I cant help but think that this will not last. I already unclaimed 2 tasks in a row as I wont finish the whole thing under 45 min reviewing, analyzing long contents of 9 documents.

Project Vault Can’t Delete My Account

I onboarded this morning and am not able to login. This feels wrong and I want to delete my stripe account but Mercor won’t allow me access. Is this job real? They have my bank account, SSN, Face ID, and I can’t delete my account before being “off boarded.” I emailed support and no response to my request.

Has anyone else tried to get off boarded and delete their account? If so, how?

AI platforms that pay by task

Does anyone know of any AI training platforms that pay by task instead of hourly?

I’ve done AI training work with LinkedIn where we’re paid per task, and I’m currently waiting for another project to start. I also recently got accepted to Mercor, and while the pay is really good ($70/hr), I’m not a fan of having to use a time tracker.

Since I already have a full-time job, I prefer projects where I can work on tasks whenever I have time and get paid based on what I complete rather than tracking hours.

Does anyone know of any other platforms that work like this? Would love some recommendations!

encouragement maybe?

I got offered a generalist expert role starting 70/hr. Im so nervous about it and I havent finished the onboarding or taken the test.

I’ve been making 12/hr doing various jobs on other sites. the sudden offer is freaking me out. how do you make the jump mentally?

also are we allowed given the confidentiality agreement, to work in public spaces like coffee shops? I dont wanna get kicked for something like that

New to Mercor

Hi everyone, I contracted an offer for a generalist on Mercor. I have completed the onboarding and am about to take the SLOB tests. Can someone tell me the do’s and don’ts, and how to start the timer before taking the tests? Is there anything I should be aware of? This is my first gig, and I recently lost my account on Outlier, and I don’t want to lose this one. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Mercor Project PAUSED

My hubby was selected for a project and was consistently performing very well and suddenly he got an email today stating the project is paused indefinitely and he is being considered for other projects . Has this ever happened to anyone. ? Is there a possibility that he might get a different project ?

Mercor

It's a bit difficult for me to ask this, but I'm hoping someone here might be able to help. I've been unemployed for the past 3 months and am currently looking for opportunities on Mercor. Previously, I worked as a Generalist Expert and AI Training Scenario Designer, contributing to AI training and evaluation projects. I genuinely enjoyed the work and would love the opportunity to contribute again. If anyone is currently working on active Mercor projects and knows of teams looking for contributors, I would be incredibly grateful for a referral or recommendation. I understand many people are looking for work right now, but if you're able to help, please feel free to comment or send me a DM.

Generalist experts, is there a way to choose what task types, or put your task preference before landing any task?

Im new to mercor and theres 9 task types, do you get them randomly? is there a way you can choose what task you want? I would like to get confident on one task before moving on to another if thats possible. Thank you.
