Would you actually want the Bruins to pay the price for Alexander Nikishin?

I've been looking more closely at the Nikishin situation and I'm curious where Bruins fans land on this.

The player fit seems pretty obvious to me. He's 24 and could potentially be part of the blue line for years rather than being another short-term acquisition.

The issue is price.

I put together an original trade-value score and also calculated what Boston's cap situation could look like under several possible Nikishin contract numbers.

My conclusion is that I'd absolutely explore it, but I wouldn't pay as though Nikishin has already become a No. 1 defenseman.

What would you actually be comfortable giving Carolina?

Would you trade Luukkonen + Jack Quinn for Connor Hellebuyck if you're Buffalo?

With Hellebuyck still in Winnipeg and talk that his market could pick up closer to training camp, I've been looking again at the Sabres as a potential fit.

The interesting part to me isn't just the trade value, it's the cap math.

UPL: $4.75M
Quinn: $3.375M
Total outgoing: $8.125M
Hellebuyck: $8.5M

So before replacing the extra roster spot, Buffalo would only add about $375K against the cap.

Obviously the much bigger question is whether Winnipeg considers UPL + Quinn enough, particularly after reports they originally wanted Zach Benson.

Personally, I wouldn't put Benson in the deal.

Would Sabres fans do UPL + Quinn? Would Jets fans consider that enough?

Cutter Gauthier Rejects Ducks Latest Offer

RFA Cutter Gauthier has rejected a four-year, $52MM ($13MM AAV) contract offer from the Ducks. Killorn, Vatrano, or Kreider better pack their bags.

Pierre McGuire thinks another Canadiens trade could be coming, would you actually move Arber Xhekaj?

McGuire recently suggested that Montreal may make another trade, but I want to make one thing clear before the speculation goes too far: he didn't say Xhekaj is the player being traded**.**

That said, I think Xhekaj is one of the more interesting players to discuss because Montreal has significant organizational depth on defence and he remains an unsigned RFA.

I put together my own trade-value model:

Xhekaj Trade Value: 73/100

What surprised me more was the cap angle.
Montreal currently has roughly $9.78M in projected space, and because Xhekaj's previous contract has expired, trading his RFA rights wouldn't suddenly clear another $1.3M.

So if Hughes moves him, I think it should be as part of a hockey trade, ideally a package for a meaningful roster upgrade, rather than simply collecting another draft pick.
Curious where Habs fans land:

Would you trade Xhekaj? If yes, what type of return would actually make it worthwhile?

Would you give Drake Batherson $10.5M+ per year, or does Ottawa eventually have to consider a trade?

Batherson is coming off 33 goals and 71 points, and the latest reporting says he wants an eight-year extension while the two sides aren't believed to be close yet.

The Sept. 15 date makes this interesting because that's the final opportunity to get an eight-year contract done before the new maximum drops to seven.

I ran a few numbers using the projected $113.5M cap for 2027-28:

$10M = 8.81% of cap
$10.5M = 9.25%
$10.625M = 9.36%
$11M = 9.69%

Personally, I think Ottawa should be comfortable around $10M-$10.5M given where the cap is headed, but once you're significantly beyond that, the internal salary structure starts getting interesting.

What would your walk-away number be?

Makar or Hughes?

Two of the NHL’s BEST defensemen, Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes, still aren’t signed.

HUGE long shot here, but let’s have some fun...

If BOTH somehow became free agents next summer and the Oilers could land one, who are you taking?

Cale Makar

Quinn Hughes

Who do you want in an Oilers jersey?

Would you extend Pavel Zacha or trade him while his value is this high?

Zacha's situation is becoming pretty interesting.

He's coming off 30 goals and 65 points and has one year left at $4.75M before becoming a UFA. Sweeney has said his goal is to extend him, although Boston has also listened when teams have called.

I put together an analysis looking at his contract situation, age, shooting percentage, center depth and trade value.

My biggest question for Bruins fans:

At what AAV would you stop trying to extend Zacha and seriously consider trading him?

Would you extend Alex DeBrincat at $11.5M-$12.25M AAV or consider trading him?

DeBrincat's situation is getting pretty interesting.

He's coming off 41 goals and 85 points, has one year remaining at $7.875M, and can become a UFA in 2027.

He previously said he loves playing in Detroit and wants to be part of the team long term, so I'm not suggesting he's requested a trade.

But Larkin's situation makes this worth discussing.

If Detroit moves Larkin and starts another meaningful retool, would you still give DeBrincat a long-term contract that could land around $12M per year?

My preference would be to extend him if the organization believes it can compete soon. If he isn't willing to extend, I'd explore the market well before the deadline rather than risk losing leverage.

If Montreal trades one of Xhekaj or Bolduc, who would you rather move?

Both Arber Xhekaj and Zachary Bolduc remain unsigned RFAs, and there has been some speculation that either could potentially be involved in a sign-and-trade.

I think they're very different situations.

My trade-value model has:

Xhekaj — 63/100
Bolduc — 76/100

Xhekaj's physicality gives him legitimate market value, but Montreal hasn't consistently used him like an everyday top-six defenseman.

Bolduc is only 23 and had 30 points last season. I'd only include him in a package if Montreal is getting a legitimate impact top-six player back.

The interesting cap angle: Montreal currently has about $9.78M in projected space, so this doesn't look like something they need to do for cap reasons.

Who would you trade, and what would you realistically want back?

Could the Flyers realistically trade for Jason Robertson? I ran the cap numbers

I've seen Philadelphia listed among the teams linked to Robertson, so I wanted to look beyond the usual "wouldn't he look great with Michkov?" discussion.

The interesting part is that the Flyers can actually fit Robertson's $12M cap hit without Dallas retaining salary.

The problem is his contract expires after this season.

My hypothetical offer is:

PHI gets: Jason Robertson
DAL gets: Owen Tippett + Oliver Bonk + 2027 1st

I would only consider something in that territory if Philadelphia had strong reason to believe Robertson would sign long-term.

Otherwise, giving up that much for one guaranteed season makes no sense to me.

What would Flyers fans actually be comfortable giving Dallas?

Would you trade significant assets for Drake Batherson if an extension was part of the deal?

There's a new report linking Montreal to Drake Batherson if Ottawa can't get him signed.

I think the interesting question isn't whether Batherson fits Montreal — a 33-goal, 71-point RW obviously does, but what the Canadiens should actually be willing to give up for him.

His current $4.975M cap hit fits Montreal's cap situation, but he's a UFA after 2026-27. That makes an extension critical for me if Montreal is giving up premium futures.

There's also the Atlantic Division issue. I can't imagine Ottawa accepting the same package from Montreal that it would accept from a Western Conference team.

Curious where Habs/Sens fans land on this. What would be a fair price without making either side immediately hang up?

Would Flyers fans actually give up four first-round picks for Adam Fantilli?

Fantilli being unsigned has brought the Flyers offer-sheet discussion back, especially after Philly already took the massive swing at Leo Carlsson.

Important context: I haven't seen credible reporting that the Flyers are actually preparing an offer sheet. Daily Faceoff previously reported that Fantilli wasn't in their plans.

But the cap math is interesting.

Philadelphia has roughly $13.78M in projected cap space, while Columbus has roughly $13.50M. Any realistic Fantilli offer above the $11.939M compensation threshold costs four first-round picks if Columbus doesn't match.

So let's say Philadelphia somehow gets Fantilli at $15M-$16M.

Would you do it?

A 21-year-old potential 1C is exactly what the Flyers have been looking for, but four firsts could completely alter the future of the organization.

Fantilli at $15M-$16M + four first-rounders: yes or no?

Would you trade significant futures for Dylan Larkin if he agreed to waive for Boston?

The Larkin/Boston idea is interesting because the biggest obstacle might not actually be Detroit's asking price.

Boston reportedly isn't on Larkin's current preferred trade list, so the Bruins may first have to convince him that they're a legitimate destination.

From a roster standpoint, though, I think the fit is difficult to ignore. Larkin would immediately give Boston a legitimate No. 1 center and let everyone else slide into more natural roles.

The cap is another issue: Boston currently projects to have about $5.39M available versus Larkin's $8.7M cap hit, meaning roughly $3.31M would have to be cleared before considering other roster implications.

Curious what Bruins fans think: what is the maximum package you'd give Detroit?

Morgan Frost to Montreal, what would you realistically give Calgary?

Frost has surfaced as a possible Canadiens trade fit, and I think this is more interesting than some of the blockbuster names Montreal has been connected to.

He's 27, had 22 goals and 43 points last season, carries a $4.375M cap hit for 2026-27, and then can become a UFA.

Montreal could absorb that entire cap hit and still have roughly $5.4M in projected space without sending salary back.

The question for me is acquisition cost.

I have Frost at 68/100 on my trade-value model, valuable enough that Calgary shouldn't give him away, but the lack of long-term team control should keep Montreal's premium prospects off the table.

What would you offer?

Should the Flames actually trade Zach Whitecloud?

Calgary's defensive depth has created an interesting situation heading into the season.

Whitecloud seems like someone who could bring back legitimate value because he's experienced, right-handed and carries a very manageable contract.

At the same time, moving him leaves Calgary relying much more heavily on a young defense group.

I also think Philadelphia is interesting if they're really looking for a more physical veteran defender. Whitecloud would be a much smaller cap commitment than some of the bigger names they've been linked to.

Would you take a strong pick/prospect package for Whitecloud, or is he more valuable staying in Calgary?

Patrik Laine linked to Toronto again, would you take the gamble at around $1.5M?

The Laine/Leafs connection caught my attention because it isn't completely new.

Elliotte Friedman reported back in March that there had been discussions involving Laine potentially ending up in Toronto or Philadelphia. Now Herb Zurkowsky has Toronto among the teams linked to Laine in free agency.

The reported estimate of roughly $1.5M for one year is where it gets interesting to me.

Toronto is currently projected over the cap, so it wouldn't be as simple as just signing him. I calculated that adding a $1.5M Laine contract to the current cap snapshot would leave the Leafs roughly $4.25M above the ceiling before corresponding moves.

I wouldn't guarantee him a top-six job, but at that price I'd seriously consider the power-play/scoring upside.
Would you do it?

What would actually be a fair Elias Pettersson trade between Vancouver and LA?

The Kings reportedly contacted Vancouver about Elias Pettersson, although it didn't reach the point of a formal offer.

I'm curious what both fan bases think a realistic deal would actually look like.

The biggest complication to me isn't even Pettersson's recent production. It's the cap.

Pettersson carries an $11.6M cap hit through 2031-32, while LA currently has roughly $1.8M in projected room. By my calculation, the Kings would need approximately $9.8M in outgoing salary/cap relief if Vancouver retained nothing.

I don't think moving Quinton Byfield makes much sense for LA because the entire point should be adding another high-end centre rather than swapping one for another.

Canucks fans: what is the minimum return you'd accept?

$34.8M to 0

Patrik Laine was once one of the most feared young scorers in hockey.

Now, in early August, he still does not have an NHL contract.

The 28-year-old just reached the end of a four-year, $34.8-million deal, but his free-agent market has reportedly been extremely quiet. Some interested teams appear unwilling to guarantee him a major role or a long-term commitment, with even a professional tryout reportedly discussed as a possibility.

That is a stunning fall for a player who scored 44 goals at age 19 and appeared destined to become one of the NHL’s elite snipers.

The issue is not whether Laine can still shoot the puck.

It is whether a team can trust his health, consistency and ability to stay in the lineup long enough to build around that talent.

Edmonton has recently surfaced as a possible landing spot, and the fit is obvious: Laine would receive opportunities beside elite playmakers and could rebuild his value on a contender. But the longer he remains unsigned, the less leverage he has—and the more likely he may need to accept a prove-it contract.

A former second-overall pick and 44-goal scorer is now fighting simply to secure his next NHL opportunity.
