Oldbordered: A Combined Format of Premodern + Old School

I really wish there was an old school + premodern format that combined both formats card pools, added in the Portal & Starter cards, merged the banlists for Old School + Premodern + Type 1.5 and also banned duals and the power 9 and anything else obviously over powered.

Basically a format where most cards printed before 2003 are legal including Portal and Starter cards but the dual lands and obviously broken cards like the power 9, Stripmine and Necropotence etc are banned.

Lots of people have beloved old border cards (Jungle Lion, Flying Men, Kird Ape, Hymn, Chain Lightning, Juzam Djinn etc) but do not have access to the Power 9 and Duals to be able to play the Old School format where these cards are legal. Its sad that such awesome cards with beautiful art and cherished memories have to sit in some box or binder somewhere.

Does any such format already exist? If not, Old Border (or Oldborder) seems like perfect names for it.

What do you think a banlist for such a format should look like?

What do you think the meta would look like?

I feel it would likely look very similar to Premodern but with cards like Juggernaut, Kird Ape, Flying Men, Jungle Lion, Chain Lightning, Hymn to Tourach, Sinkhole, Juzam Djinn and Goblin Grenade legal, aggro decks would be a little more viable.

I would love ideas on how to tweak the ban list to result in a meta that is atleast comparable to Premoderns current power level and pace, with perhaps a little more aggro. And to help with adoption, I would want all current Premodern decks to also be legal in this new format so that existing Premodern players would have a low barrier of entry to try this format out.

It would be nostalgic for the original Type 1.5 players, Legacy players, Old School players, Middle School players and Premodern players so such a format could cast a pretty wide net and spark lots of attendance if any store is willing to bite the bullet to hosting the first Oldborder event.

Its me the proxy guy that was trying to build a premodern Scene in Phoenix Arizona.

Hey guys! Wanted to let you know the Premodern scene has been growing rapidly in Phoenix Arizona, This started as me just trying to find a few people to play with as i was unhappy with the direction of magic and never in my wild dreams did i think it would go this well. So thank you to everyone that has made this possible. We have been having a consistent 12-14 people come out every Tuesday for our free-to-play Premodern nights. Due to the success of the weekly events and the interest from all the new faces we see every week who want a monthly tournament to look forward to, ArizonaPremodern.com—home of the "Phoenician Dreadnoughts"—is proud to present our first monthly tournament in partnership with Gamers Guild AZ! All details, including Discord event registrations and a link to pre-purchase your event ticket from Gamers Guild, can be found on our website.

Photo Negative Wheel of Fortune (UNL). 1 of 1

"Art is the window to man's soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within." - Lady Bird Johnson

Photo Negative Wheel of Fortune came to fruition from a simple question, what can I do better?

In the pursuit of improvement and when comparing my artwork to the paintings of fellow alter artists I hold deep respect for, I often experience imposter syndrome. Their portfolios adeptly combine Magic with either cultural references or the zeitgeist of our era, and their brilliantly unique ideas are masterfully transferred from mind to canvas. Like Michelangelo, DaVinci, Monet, and Picasso, they are who I often think of when I hear the term artist. Thusly, my inner monologue was often caught saying the following:

“This piece was just negating a card. That’s not a new idea nor is it ‘creative’ like theirs. Can you really call yourself an artist?”

As they say, comparison is the thief of joy.

Arguably negating a card is “less creative”, but this latest painting in the negative series encapsulates parts of my soul in a playing card sized piece of cardboard. It’s difficult to articulate, but it portrays my enjoyment with a self imposed challenge, years studying and loving the beauty of mathematics, an awareness of my sometimes overly analytical mind, and an appreciation of beauty in technical precision. It represents hours of frustration, happiness, determination, and flow, many such states occurring simultaneously. It’s during these hours, especially those of flow, when the soul infuses into art, making it more than just paint on cardboard.

This painting isn’t perfect, but I relished in the challenge of making it as close as possible, where fractions of a millimeter make a difference and there was increasingly less and less room for error. To Dan Gelon, the original artist of Wheel of Fortune, thank you for painting a piece as iconic as the game itself. This was a special one to negate. Lastly, to the inner monologue…

You are an artist. We all are.

What should I do with old 60 card decks?

I recently got back into Magic after a long hiatus. Back when I last played, 60 card was the standard and EDH was in its infancy. I never got into it enough back then to buy or build any commander decks, but I do still have plenty of old 60 card decks in storage.

Is there anything I can actually do with these decks without taking them apart? They are too weak to hold up in competitive modern/pioneer. And long rotated out of standard format.

I don’t really know anyone that still plays 60 card, so I’d have to go to a LGs modern tournament to actually be able to play with them. And chances are none of them will hold up unless somebody else is doing the same thing with their old 60 card decks.

Ressources online ?

Hey !

Old-school player here, i want to feed my MTG brain !

I'd like to know what everyone uses on the web in terms of ressources : articles, blogs, etc.

My idea isn’t to get THE one and only guide and apply it. But, I'd love to read and learn ... and try to become a better player.

For instance :

Building the right mana base, sideboard construction, frequent mistakes you should avoid, misconception, etc.

What websites are you using ?

Thanks

Mono Green Eureincarnation

I always had a thing for fun decks with janky combos. Luckily I have a few friends with the same interest. So we organized an old school event called Spice Wars. Dedicated to spicy decks. 40 players came and we had a blast. Now I can't stop brewing janky decks.

This is my latest project, still under construction. Put fattys into play with Eureka or with Reincarnation. Instill Energy to give Colossus haste and free untap. Jalum Tome to put a fatty in the graveyard. Target Scavenger Folk with Reincarnation, sac to pop an artifact and bring a fatty into play. Already had a bunch of enchantments, so decided to try out a few Enchantress for card draw.

We recently started a Youtube channel with coverage and commentary dedicated to old school spice decks. - Spice Wars TCG -

Priest of Yawgmoth

I wanted to play Argivian Archaeologist. My first version with 2 AA and 3 Sage and only Tutor in B seemed awful. Leaning into black a lot more brought me here. How do I get another Sage in here?

Full color alter Orb by Tedin

Mark did this for me at GP Denver I think in 2018, maybe 2019. Losing track of time. I don’t really get a chance to play anymore so it’s on display in my office now.
