Update on the 4 Season Series + Movie

A while back I made an Ongezellig 4 Season Series + Movie, and I recently made an Ongezellig 13 EP Series.

As some of you know, the 4 Season + Movie had Coco dying in the third season, and many of you guys said her death was unnecessary. At the time I disagreed with this, thinking that the story had to continue like this for character development for Maya, but a comment made me think otherwise.

Instead of Coco dying, she would be cured in Season 3, and this would make Maya realize that she shouldn't be living with regret each day, and to live life fully in the present. This would result in more character development for Maya, while also letting Coco live to see the finale. Thank you all for the support from the 4 Season Series + Movie and the 13 EP Series

Do you guys think Axel is kinda explicitly made to be paired with Kiki?

I mean, I can't be 100% sure if his design was meant to resemble a pirate, but let's be real, it pretty much does.

And the fact that there's a scene he and Kiki hanging out together, and Axel was placed right next to Kiki in a classmate photo, even if they were maybe not necessarily meant to be a couple, I have to doubt their relationship was kinda intentional.

I don't know. It would've been much more explicit if Massa had drawn an illustration about those two.

Ongezellig if it was a 13 EP Series

Ongezellig if it was a 13 EP Series

A while ago, I made a story outlining 4 seasons + movie of Ongezellig, and this is the 13 EP version of that story. The original story is modified to make it more concise to fit 13 episodes. Technically there would be more content for each episode but then this post would have been too long.

EP 1: Pilot episode + more dialogue from Maya, Coco, Mymy, and Maya's imaginary friends.

EP 2: Maya's 16th birthday backstory is shown. Class representative elections between Mymy and Kiki. Mymy gets help from Stan to create posters, and Mymy and Kiki post flyers around the school.

After the class representative debate, the voting is done by class order and they each get nine votes. Maya is the tie-breaker vote. She is torn between Mymy and Kiki but she finally picks Mymy, making her the class representative.

EP 3: Mymy and Kiki hang out and play some soccer together, but they ruin Tryn's dress. Mymy does class representative activities and gets in trouble for implementing controversial policies. More character development for the main and side characters.

EP 4: Maya asks for advice from Mymy and Coco to become more confident. They say to gradually talk to more people, cut down on negative habits, and to be more clean. Maya showers which reveals her red tips of hair and we get a backstory from her past. In the present, Maya tries to talk to people in her group for a school project but messes up. Maya and Mymy walk together in the halls and they see an autistic kid with a special ed teacher. Maya and Mymy make faces and try not to laugh but fail horribly. This catches Vera's attention and they run away. "At least my day wasn't horrible", thinks Maya.

EP 5: Maya slowly starts to overcome her corn addiction and starts to eat and sleep better and decides to slowly talk to more people, although Maya’s mother, father, and bullies hinder her progress. Maya realizes she has an interest toward music and after receiving support from Coco and Mymy, decides to pursue it.

Maya attends a party with her sisters and overcomes more of her social anxiety but starts to get bullied by long-time bullies while at the party. Soei also gets angry at Maya for attending the party, even though she's fine with Coco and Mymy attending. Ravi listens to whatever Soei says. Maya goes back to black hair.

EP 6: Maya stands up to bullies with help from her sisters and gets over anxiety with interacting with her sisters. Maya sees Vera practicing her guitar and gets the courage to ask her about it. After talking to each other for a while, Vera decides to teach Maya how to play the guitar. Maya, Coco, and Mymy play the board game "Mens erger je niet!" together at the end of the episode. First half of Ongezellig complete.

EP 7: Maya, Coco, Mymy, Soei, and Ravi visit Amsterdam during the holidays and view the fireworks. Maya, Coco, and Mymy recall viewing the fireworks 10 years ago and promise to view the fireworks again 10 years in the future. After they go back to their hometown, Eiko meets Maya and reveals she is trying to find her sister. Eiko and Mymy meet on a chance encounter and they get to know each other after all these years.

EP 8: Despite Mymy's reluctance, Maya and Coco encourage Mymy to hang out with Eiko. Eiko and Mymy hang out, and after Eiko tells Mymy that she and their parents want Mymy to come back to Japan, a huge argument happens leading Mymy to run away. Mymy's backstory is revealed and she overcomes her trauma. Eiko understands why Mymy tries to be 100% Dutch but tells Mymy to never hate herself and gives Mymy her katana.

EP 9: Mymy and Kiki decide to sail to a small island during school break to claim it as their own. There they have a Katana (Mymy) vs Pirate Sword (Kiki) fight. Kiki barely wins the fight and they view the sunset together, planting a VOC and pirate flag on the island. More character development for Maya, Coco, Soei, and Ravi. There are more arguments happening between Maya and Soei.

EP 10: Entire class meets up to shop for materials for the school cultural festival. Maya sees a dress she loves but doesn't buy it due to her budget exceeding the limit (she's scared Soei will scold her). More plot development for the side characters.

EP 11: Coco rugby final match, Coco's team starts to lose but Coco gets a vision of her biological parents. Coco's backstory is revealed and she overcomes her trauma. Coco's National Rugby team wins the Rugby Europe Women's Championship.

EP 12: School festival commences, and many people have their own stations. At the end, Coco, Zoey, Yfke, and Cleo do a performance with Maya and Vera as special guests. Vera is happy again after a long time, and Maya truly becomes confident in those moments. Soei sees this and gets incredibly upset.

Ep 13: Maya and Soei have the biggest argument yet, where Soei says Maya's birth was a mistake. Maya finally stands up for herself, with Coco and Mymy standing up for her as well. The school year ends, and Kiki gives Maya the dress she had seen in the store as a gift. There is a two year time skip to the end of high school. Maya, Coco, Mymy, and the entire class graduate.

A few months later... Maya meets up with Coco on a ledge overlooking the landscape, wearing the dress Kiki gave her. Maya thanks Coco for helping her become fully confident, and Coco tears up and hugs Maya. Mymy comes and hugs both of them. When Maya is alone, her imaginary friends Anke and Epke appear and say she has done well and wish her all the best before leaving forever. Later, Mymy leaves for college, then Coco. Just as Maya is about to leave, Soei talks to Maya and Maya finally exposes the years of abuse from Soei and the neglect from Ravi. Maya says one last goodbye and closes the door.

Soei goes upstairs and sees Maya's childhood pictures. Soei's backstory is revealed where she was abused by her parents when she was young. She met Ravi in high school, where she subsequently got pregnant with Maya. Soei's parents, being of immigrant origin, got very angry with her. After Soei birthed Maya, her parents kicked Soei and Maya out. Soei and Ravi got a place together and raised Maya. However, due to increasing amounts of verbal abuse from Soei's family, she became bitter and started taking her anger out on Maya and Ravi. She harassed and physically abused Maya until Maya became more and more anxious, and made Ravi into a permissive husband. Soei later decided for the family to adopt Coco, then Mymy. Soei starts to realize she is at fault for ruining Maya's life and making the lives of others around her more difficult. When she's about to completely see the truth, her ego gets the best of her and she thinks she is not at fault whatsoever. She never apologizes to Maya.

10 years later...

Maya is now a musician and officially engaged. She also has her true reddish black hair. She walks through the streets of Amsterdam, now able to talk to strangers without difficulty, and to live life without fear, what she always wanted. She meets a girl and they talk for a while. The girl is afraid to ask someone a question, but Maya encourages the girl to do it and she does, which increases her confidence a little bit. When Maya is about to leave the girl asks Maya if she was ever socially anxious, to which Maya responds "Yes, I was just like you, a lot more anxious actually. But I overcame it, and I know you will too".

Maya meets with Coco, Mymy, Vera, and their friends in a restaurant and they all talk about their lives. Mymy has black hair as she fully accepts she is Japanese but still follows Dutch culture. Mymy and Coco got married, and Mymy pokes fun at Maya for "only" getting engaged. They all go to the place where Maya, Coco, and Mymy viewed the fireworks 10 years ago and the camera rises to show the city from above.

The End.

Is there still hope for Ongezellig?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I’m genuinely curious what everyone here thinks about the future of Ongezellig.

I’ve become really attached to this series. It’s actually kind of unusual for me. Usually when I discover a series or some kind of media I get really into it for maybe a month at most and then I eventually lose interest. But with Ongezellig it’s been around four months now and I still haven’t gotten tired of it.

And what’s crazy to me is that the last episode was released years ago. The first dell came out out in 2018 and the pilot was completed in 2022 yet people are still incredibly passionate about it today.

I know I’m mostly just a consumer of the content but there are so many people in this community who are extremely talented and creative and who genuinely love this series. People have entire accounts dedicated to it and make art animations comics discussions memes theories and all kinds of stuff. Some people are clearly even more invested in it than I am.

So this makes me wonder.

Is there actually any realistic hope for Ongezellig to continue someday?

I know there are fan projects being worked on and I really appreciate the people making them. But from what I’ve seen most of them are limited to things like comics and those can take a very long time to produce.

What I’m wondering about is something more substantial.

Could the original series ever come back either with Studio Massa or somehow through another official production?

And if that’s completely impossible could someone else eventually make a genuine continuation of Ongezellig?

I’m not talking about a random fan parody or something that just uses the characters. I mean a serious continuation made by people who actually understand what made Ongezellig special. The atmosphere the writing the characters the humor the visual style and the overall feeling of the original.

It obviously wouldn’t be canon and that’s fine. Personally I’d still be interested in seeing a well-made non-canon continuation if it genuinely felt like Ongezellig and respected the original work.

Because honestly seeing how many people still care about this series years after the last episode makes me wonder if there’s enough passion and talent in the community for something like that to eventually happen.

So what do you guys think?

Is a real continuation actually possible?

Could Ongezellig realistically return someday either officially or through a serious fan made production?

And if you think it’s possible how would you imagine it happening and when do you think something like that could realistically happen?

Ongezellig has been bothering me lately. I genuinely care about this series a lot. It’s probably the piece of media I’ve connected with the most and the one I’ve understood on a personal level more than anything else.

So I finally decided to make this post and ask what you guys think about its future.
