I spent six months chasing the “perfect setup” and accidentally made my room harder to live in.

Six months ago my room was honestly very normal. One desk. One monitor. Cheap office chair that squeaked every time I leaned back. Wires everywhere like spaghetti. Nothing aesthetic about it at all. But it worked.

Then one night I made the mistake of scrolling setup videos before sleeping.

Suddenly I was deep into the world of custom lighting, floating shelves, dual monitor arms, wall panels, headphone docks, tiny desk plants, all of it. Every setup online looked peaceful and futuristic. People kept calling them “PC stations” instead of desks and somehow that made everything sound more serious.

At first it was fun.

I replaced my old desk with a wider walnut one. Added monitor lights. Bought a mechanical keyboard that sounded like rain on windows. Then came the pegboards, cable trays, RGB strips behind the monitors. I even ordered small accessories from alibaba because some creators said the same factories make products for expensive brands anyway.

Fast forward maybe four months and my room started feeling less like a bedroom and more like a control center.

That sounds cool in theory until you actually live inside it.

Cleaning became annoying. Dust collected everywhere around the LEDs and shelves. One cheap monitor arm slowly tilted downward every week no matter how tight I made it. The aesthetic white mousepad turned yellow near the wrist area. Cable management looked amazing exactly once.

Now honestly I think the best setups are the ones people can comfortably use every single day, not just photograph for Reddit.

A beautiful setup that becomes stressful to maintain kind of defeats the whole purpose.

Need help with my setup. +Suggestions?

Hey there, what's up? I just cleaned my setup and while I love it, I do think it lacks something, I just have no idea what it is! If there's anything that you think I could switch up or add, please do tell. I'm also having issues with cable managment, though this is the best my cable setup has ever looked lol (I have got no idea why some of the pictures are colored so weird, sorry.)

Bare bones setup looking for a cozy glow-up; where do I even start?

Hey guys! Looking for some suggestions to improve my setup and give it more of a cozy, warm vibe.

Here's what I'm working with: an LG ultrawide curved monitor, an RGB mechanical keyboard, a small mouse-only mousepad, and a laptop on the side. The desk is completely bare otherwise — no lighting, no cable management, nothing aesthetic going on.

I already know a larger extended mousepad is the first thing I need — something that covers the keyboard and mouse together. Would love recommendations for a good one that won't break the bank.

Beyond that, I'm honestly lost. I don't want to go overboard — just want to add things that are actually necessary and make a real visual difference without spending on stuff that's just fluff. What would you prioritise in a setup like this to make it feel more "lived-in" and cozier rather than just a plain white desk with gear on it?

Any suggestions are welcome! 🙏
