Portra 160 vs 400 on the 17

I'll be camping in Denali next weekend and am wondering whether I should load my Pentax 17 with Portra 160 or Portra 400. I have used 160 with the 17 before and appreciate the sharper images it gives me, but conditions look a little variable and I wonder if I should take 400 to be safe for different light conditions—I just worry about sacrificing "sharpness," (as minute as that can be on this camera) since I don't know when I'll come back to this National Park again.

I'd love to know what more experienced 17 shooters have to say about the difference between the two stocks on this camera.

Some clarifications: I have shot Portra 400 before I have not used it on half-frame yet and I am bringing my Sony with me, so this won't be my only camera.

Favorite Film Stock?

What is your go to or favorite Film Stock to shoot in the pentax 17?

Being that there's 72 shots per roll most of the time, I find myself over committing sometimes. Shot some Fuji 400 recently and didn't like the grain. On the flip side gold and portra 160 renders really nicely.

I've found iso 200 or less works best in this camera. So, how about you?

Portra 160 - Weekend getaway

First time shooting portra 160 and really love the fine grain and sharpness!
Also really content with how this film turned out! My first few films were not that great since I was just doing something and mostly making snapshots. This was the first time I was really paying attention to exposure compensation and zone focus and it shows.
Would love to up my game even more so let me know if you have more tips and tricks :)

Some help please, not sure if it’s just me but wondering if this is user error or maybe something off with my camera (Portra 160)

Hi folks, I picked up the 17 before our honeymoon in Greece alongside a couple of rolls of Portra 160. This follows on from a number of point and shoots that would die after shooting a few rolls of film and wanting to get something hopefully more reliable and with a warranty. Having said that, I’d very much class myself as a novice when it comes to film photography beyond auto point and shoots.

I shot primarily in automatic mode throughout the trip and with Exposure compensation consistently at 0 throughout. Exposure was set to 160 on the camera to reflect the film stock. The film lab I usually use is great for context too (Gulabi in Glasgow).

However, I am not sure if I’m just being overly critical but in some of the photos I can’t help but feel the colours are a bit lacking/washed out looking and I’m just wondering if there is something obvious I could be doing wrong here or that could be wrong with the camera? Additionally, I feel like there is some visible vignetting at times particularly when the sky is visible - not sure if this is pretty normal?

I’ve since shot a roll on Ultramax 400 I’m awaiting the results of and I used manual focus/ played about with compensation much more for this roll but still to receive this back and see if I’m any happier with the results. Any thoughts or input are appreciated - cheers!

Is there something wrong with my camera, or user error? (Pentax 17, Fujifilm 400)

Hi everyone, I recently got a Pentax 17 second-hand from eBay and shot my first roll. I'm disappointed with how the photos came out in comparison to what I've experienced on my past 2 film cameras (point and shoot, and manual).

The pictures seem underexposed and look really hazy. The colors seem really muted and there's so much grain. Is this an issue with the camera, or user error? What should I try doing instead?

For context, I believe most photos were shot on Auto, and some with P. ISO is set to 400 to match the film, and I didn't adjust the exposure composition dial. I also adjusted the zone focus (I recently realized this doesn't matter with Auto anyways lol).

Pentax 17 rewind jam

Just bought a Pentax 17 yesterday (not her yet, but very excited from the results I see). Just had a question of the rewind Jane problem I hear about? Do you guys just stop right at 72 frames or go until you feel tension? Also is this a common thing or have you guys ever had issues on your camera?
