I Remastered The Glow Pt. 2's Album Cover

Once I found out the album cover was actually taken from an old dutch cookbook (Calvé Delft's Winterboekje), I wondered what the album cover would look like if it wasn't worn-down and stained.

I took the yellowed colors from the album cover, but I made a version with the original cookbook print's colors too. I also zoomed-out the artwork a little, to make it feel less like a rectangular piece cropped into a square (that bottom left corner's border getting cut off always bothered me)

I don't mean to imply that the artwork looks worse with the wear. Obviously the weathering of the album cover is part of its charm, and I think it's representative of the lo-fi production of the record. However, I think it's nice to have this cleaner variation for those who want something more simplistic or reproducible.

All of my work was done in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, with the majority of the work coming from finding the best source image and utilizing/tweaking the Image Trace feature.

I've uploaded the full artwork in addition to some different sizes of my edits. Enjoy!

My interpretation of "The Glow, Pt.2"

TW: Mention of suicide

This interpretation may sound unusual, but I think it makes sense. In my opinion, the album is rooted in the idea of suicide. This post resumes my reading.

In the first few songs, the protagonist of the album starts viewing the world in a more and more distorted and pessimistic way, which the lyrics show clearly (if we consider this reading of the album).

In the songs “I felt my size” and “I felt your shape” there’s a major switch— the main character realizes what dying actually means. He realizes death wasn’t as simple as he had pictured (“I thought I felt your shape but I was wrong”), that he was wrong about life and that his pessimistic feelings were exaggerated (“Really, all I felt was falsely strong / I held on tight and closed my eyes/ It was dumb, I had no sense of your size/ It was dumb to hold so tight”). He feels death like he never had before and he totally changes his mind.
The next two songs, aka “Samurai Sword” and “My warm blood” are what happens after he makes such realization.

In “Samurai Sword”, the protagonist has a battle with a bear, which is a symbol of the idea of suicide. The bear wants to eat him (“You want my blood all over your face”), aka wants him to commit. An interesting detail is the samurai sword— which can be used to take one’s life since samurais committed when their honor was dirtied. In this case, though, such sword is used to kill the idea of suicide.
So, he manages to kill the bear, therefore he survives his own mind.

In “My Warm Blood”, the idea of suicide is no longer in the main character’s mind and a sense of “loneliness” is described. This can be explained when considering the following: the battle against suicide is often a lonely one since it can happen only in one’s mind and people around one may not realize what one is going through. As we know, Phil uses very often represents nature as an entity that is alive in a human sense. In this song, it’s the insects, aka a part of nature, that know what the protagonist went through. The loneliness is emphasized in the first lines but the song ends with the line “My red blood is warm still” which means the main character is still alive and feels the will to live going back into him.

What should be the first song on Phil Elverum's greatest hits?

Most upvoted song in the comments becomes the opening track!!!

I posted a playlist of my handcrafted Phil Elverum Greatest Hits 4xCD here a few months ago, maybe a year or more. Seeing u/SurvivorFanDan do this project on r/thebeatles , letting the sub members themselves choose the songs that were included, one song at a time, one day at a time, I wanted to revisit this project in their style.

I put room for 20 tracks on each disc in the graphic, but that's just an estimate. In reality there will be as many tracks as it takes to get as close to 1:14:19 per disc as possible. So that means once there's 29:36 on disc one, Microphones in 2020 is no longer allowed on disc one; and once there's 57:09 on disc one, I. The Sun is no longer allowed on disc one, and so on and so forth for each disc. This is to ensure the collection can actually fit on 4 CDs. Once the thresholds have been crossed forbidding Phil's longest songs from each disc, I'll be sure to specify so in the body text of each subsequent post, to ensure those songs don't win that day's vote.

Good luck, have fun, and may the best songs win!
