Anyone else's Pomeranian still had puppy uglies at 14 months?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for advice and experiences from other Pomeranian owners.

My Pom is 14 months old, and he still doesn't seem to have his full adult coat. He has thinner hair on the back of his thighs and behind his knees, although his skin is healthy and he doesn't itch.

Everything I've read says the "puppy uglies" usually happen between 4 and 8 months, so I'm starting to worry because he's already 14 months old.

Has anyone else's Pomeranian gone through a very late coat transition like this? Did your dog's adult coat eventually come in after 14 months?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thank you! 😊

Give me your most judgemental poms

Shooblers sentenced me to hard labor after waking her up. Couldn't bribe myself out of it with triple the cheese tax or double the snackrifices.

I’m heartbroken.. Am I making the wrong decision about my Pomeranian?

Hi everyone,
I’m writing this because I’m honestly heartbroken and don’t know what to do anymore.

I have an 8-month-old female Pomeranian, and for the first time I’m seriously thinking about rehoming her. I never thought I’d even consider writing something like this.

I grew up with dogs. My family always had Collies, and we never had any major issues with training or behavior. They were well-behaved, easy to train, and overall wonderful family dogs.

I’m 23 years old, work remotely, and always dreamed of having a small dog that I could take almost everywhere with me. Since I work from home, I have plenty of time for a dog, and one of the reasons I wanted a small breed was because I love traveling and hoped my dog could always come with me instead of staying in a boarding kennel or with relatives.

My best friend has a German Spitz, and her parents own two Pomeranians, so I wasn’t completely unfamiliar with the breed. I also did a lot of research before getting mine.

Her mother weighs about 3 kg (6.6 lbs) and her father about 7 kg (15.4 lbs). However, my girl already weighs 6 kg (13.2 lbs) at only 8 months old. I’m worried she’ll grow even more, and many European airlines only allow dogs in the cabin if the total weight (dog + carrier) stays under around 8 kg. Traveling together was something that was really important to me from the beginning.

But honestly, that’s not even my biggest concern.
The main issue is her behavior…

She reacts to absolutely everything. Walks are stressful because she barks at people, bicycles, cars, tractors, scooters… basically anything that moves or makes noise. Even if we’re just sitting in our fenced yard, she’ll bark at everything passing by. If we sit at a café, it’s almost impossible for her to settle because she’s constantly reacting to every person walking past.
She’s never aggressive and has never bitten anyone, but the barking makes it incredibly difficult to take her anywhere. I imagined taking my dog with me to cafés, restaurants, shopping centers, or into town when meeting friends, but at the moment that’s simply not possible.

Car rides are another HUGE problem. She barks almost the entire drive. Toys, chews, and treats don’t keep her occupied for long. When she was younger, she used to jump all over the car and even tried to jump out whenever I opened the door. I bought a seatbelt attachment and a car seat, but she completely ignores the seat and just drags it around behind her.

From the time she was about 2 months old, I regularly took her into town and on car rides to socialize her, and back then she handled everything really well, which is why I’m so confused about how much her behavior has changed.

Off leash isn’t really an option either unless the area is securely fenced. She will chase anything that moves or makes noise.
I’ve tried training her consistently. My parents helped me, they’ve owned and trained dogs for years and my best friend also helped since she’s familiar with Pomeranians.
Unfortunately, my dog isn’t very food motivated, which made training much harder. We have made very little progress despite putting in a lot of time and effort.

Another issue is grooming. She’s generally not an aggressive dog, but when it comes to brushing, she becomes extremely defensive. The only way I can brush her is while she’s wearing a muzzle because she constantly tries to bite the brush and won’t stay still at all. It doesn’t seem to matter which brush I use or whether it’s pulling on her coat.. I even tried my mom’s very soft, wide-toothed hairbrush that’s meant for curly hair, and she reacted exactly the same way.

I’m honestly exhausted, sad, and disappointed because this isn’t what I imagined at all. I love her so much, and I really don’t want to give her away. But lately I’ve started wondering if she’d actually be happier with someone who is more experienced with difficult dogs or can give her something that I can’t.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any reputable dog trainers anywhere near where I live.

Has anyone had a dog like this that eventually improved? Is this something that can still get much better with age and training? Or have any of you been in a similar situation?
I’m really looking for honest advice because I want to do what’s best for both of us.

(English isn’t my first language, so I had a little help from ChatGPT to translate my thoughts. I hope everything makes sense)

What progress!!

Today we saw a huge turnaround, and I’m so happy. Overnight, he went from huddling in his cubbyhole to sleeping between my husband and I, belly up!

I only got bit once today! He has a bit to go, yet. But today it felt like he actually loved me 🥰

Double the fluff, double the happiness.

They make everything better just by existing.

My first Pomeranian - I always had Border Collies but don’t currently have a big backyard, and I wanted a companion with personality. I think I found him.

Just wondering—when did your Pom start losing their baby teeth? Kai is 5 months old🌷
