I'm currently planning an album release, and it got me wondering...

What's the ideal number of songs for you?

Do you prefer a short album with no filler, or a longer one with more variety?

What's the sweet spot? 10 songs? 12? 15?

20 years ago, popular "emo" pop punk bands were Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, etc

The Hart is my second favorite album by them, outside of Nella Vita. However it released over a year and a half ago and only one song has managed to eclipse a million listens on Spotify. Kept Me Alive is an amazing song!!

Atlantic, Forever Yours, and Fever Dream were clearly their peak, and lots of bands never recover their peak. Nella Vita was an amazing follow up and they had some popular bangers on there. Umbra was okay, but not awful, and then Not Afraid to Die was a successful single. I used to think them and Movements were the future of the emo / pop punk genre. But it seems like they’ve just completely fallen off. What’s your thoughts on Grayscale?

Hey! I recently went through some old cassettes I had recorded from radio broadcasts. I found this acoustic version of SR71's Right Now that they performed in one of their local, Baltimore-area radio stations, 99.1 WHFS.

Every Thanksgiving, this station would do a huge playlist of acoustic-only music. Some of the choices were from MTV Unplugged sets, while others were specifically recorded at WHFS when touring bands were coming through.

1985 by SR-71 is wayyyyyyy better than Bowling For Soups version. I think its safe to say that Bowling For Soup has little to no talent at all when it comes to making big independent pop punk hits, and their biggest hits are songs they got gifted and covered, and they all sound generic and somehow get popular. I feel bad for Mitch Allan, considering the song that was supposed to be his got more popular by a band that how claims the title of “Biggest Hit 1985” And in both versions, theres a clear distinction of Sr-71’s version where it feels as if we’re hearing a story from heart, and the stolen BFS’s version..

In other words, what are some near-perfect albums with a weak track 1?

Anyone mess with A Wilhelm Scream? I just recently found out about these guys and have sort of been bouncing around their catalogue. I’m a big Hot Water Music fan, so I’m a bit surprised I’d never heard of them, as I feel like they had to have been influenced by HWM. Seems like this album might not be one of their most popular with fans, but I like a handful of tracks on it. They have the feel of a band that I have to imagine puts on a really fun live show, with a great mix of fast classic style skate punk, shout along/anthemic choruses, and some shredding almost metal like guitar sections. If there’s any can’t miss records from this band, lmk. 🤘🏻

TikTok, love it or hate it (or be completely indifferent to it), the power it has to bring new life into bands and artists that would've otherwise just stayed in their own niche, or woulda remained obscure, is kinda insane. So throw a band at destiny you feel TikTok kids would've eaten up if they ever discovered them today. (Preferably if they're from around the 2000s to early 2010s, although seeing a 90s pop punk group getting newfound popularity would be funny as hell too)
