I built the mixing tool I wish I had when I was learning audio engineering

I always thought buying better gear would fix my mixes, but what I was really missing was understanding the theory behind why they weren’t working. I built Mozonic to analyze mixes, suggest corrections, and explain the reasoning so you can improve while you mix. I’d love any feedback. www.mozonic.com

EHX Super Ego (not +)

Hi everyone, curious on the standard (now discontinued) model of Super Ego. I really want to get into ambient stuff for frozen/ glitch pads etc.

I record directly into reaper, so the live performance issue is only for creating on the fly in my studio. I love the idea of using my pedals to warp and use them as instrument in real time.

My current ambient pedals (not in order..):

-boss dd-6
- Caroline kilobyte
- boss rv-5
- jhs iii chorus
- ehx 360

Is there a hanger for live audio jacks from amplifiers?

I figured this would be the Reddit to ask this question in.

I have two things that I use for my base or my guitar: an amplifier and a Fender PreSonus audio box . I don't mind having to shut the monitor off every time just to unplug the guitar to move the guitar connection over to the audio box , but it is a pain in the rear end. However when I unplugged the audio box to go back to the amplifier I just want to leave that cord live so that I can plug back into it.

Ideally I would leave them both live and just have them hanging off something that was protected so that I wouldn't have to shut either the amplifier or the audio box down each time.

I did a search for live amplifier cord hanger but didn't come up with anything.

As an artist, does it help to live in a big city like NYC or LA?

Honestly this is out of curiosity. Is there any big reason or difference in getting your music out there when you live in a big city? Live shows still happen and there’s open mic nights in smaller areas too so does the process change much in a big city?

Need help with dynamic compression. I know how to use plugin, just need some explanation.

Hello all!

I'm having some trouble understanding the concept of a dynamic compressor.

Is it just a normal compressor but with settings for specific frequencies?

I use the one on Ableton a lot for my guitar EQ and it sounds wonderful, but I'm honestly at a loss for what exactly is going on "behind the scenes," per se.

Help would be appreciated!

Accoustic guitar too hot question

Hello everyone. Day 2 beginner home studio user here. I am currently running a Yamaha fx335c acoustic/electric through a Presonus audiobox usb96 into studio one to record. My guitar line is clipping and distorting constantly. The only thing that seems to work is turning the volume down on the guitar itself, but then I lose all of the sound quality. Has anyone had experience with this sort of thing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mac mini M4 ran a 41-track Logic session under 52% CPU without breaking a sweat

Was skeptical about the mini for actual production work but I've been running it for a few months now and it genuinely surprised me. Full mix chain, Alchemy instruments, Drum Machine Designer, three Chromaverb instances, 128-sample buffer — no dropouts, fans barely spin up. It's almost unsettlingly quiet.

The thing I didn't expect: it handles vocal recording in the same room because it just doesn't make noise at normal production loads. My old iMac fan would kick in the moment I started bouncing anything.

Only real ceiling I've hit is RAM. If you're loading Kontakt orchestral patches you'll feel the 32GB max sooner than you'd think. Jumped to 24GB and it helped but I'm already curious how close to the edge I'll get.

Anyone else running heavy sample libraries on the mini, and where did you hit the wall?

[IN PROGRESS] Can This Tiny Device Sound This Good? - Harley Benton DNAfx GiT Mobile II | Atmospheric Black Metal Guitar Tone Test

I just created this short out of curiosity, but I’d like to know if anyone else is crazy enough like me to record an album using this tiny device.

"Using this little device, I’ve thrown myself into recording two EPs simultaneously for Mtvare. Through this process, I’ve learned how to properly record, mix, and master, and I’m very proud of the sound I’m achieving. I’m really looking forward to sharing both EPs."

Does anyone know what microphone Maggie Lindemann is using to make covers at home?

https://reddit.com/link/1ulyw8x/video/grkgytkrnwah1/player

This is the video I'm referencing. I really need help identifying what microphone she uses. It's exactly what I've been looking for. Also, what setup would I need to achieve this kind of karaoke at home, where I'd use it to sing live, not for recording? Any advice is really appreciated.

Optical ports

When would I use the optical ports?
Can I use it to daisy chain two interfaces to get more channels/ tracks?
I’m assuming I would need an usb-c /optical converter to get it into my computer.
16i16
Baby face Pro
Mac Air M5
I just purchased 16i16 and waiting for it.
Any suggestions? Bottom line is to be able to record more tracks /live
Thanks

I wanna make money off of vocal covers.

In my area, I haven't been able to find any jobs because I'm not of age yet. I've enjoyed making vocal covers on Bandlab and posting it on Instagram and TikTok as a side hobby.

My main problem right now is not having enough money to buy *quality* equipment. As of now, all I have is my iPhone, my guitar, and a year of singing experience.

My first idea was to ask relatives to help support me, since I have a huge family. I just don't know how to put it into action.

Any advice for a kid who wants to take music seriously and make money off of it would be really appreciated!

edit 1: Thanks for all the replies, I read and appreciate all of them!

Tips for a starter set up?

Reposting (with several alterations!) on my main account since I accidentally made the og post on my throwaway and got no replies lol.

I'm looking for a small setup to help me record some of my music! I'm a mezzo-soprano and sing in operatic, choral, musical-theatre, and pop styles. I'm decently familiar with audacity and FLStudio (2025) as far as production software. I might want to record a bit of acoustic guitar but as of right now that's not a priority.

After doing some research I've made a list of what I think I want to go with for equipment, but I wanted some suggestions!

Behringer SL84C microphone (ik 90% of people are going to recommend saving for the Shure SM58 but I'd like to start a little cheaper as i'm about to graduate university and will likely be moving- the SM58 will 100% be on my list once I have a job in my field!)

Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 audio interface (Again, cheaper the better. I'm also living in a one-bedroom apartment and my "studio" has to triple as my homework/study station and bedroom, so size is also a factor)

FIBBR XLR cable

FIFINE Studio Monitor Headphones (imo headphones are not entirely necessary for me! if these suck i'm willing to save up for a better set)

Question about cables for Focusrite Scarlett 18i16 4th gen audio interface

I’m wanting to connect my Boss KATANA Gen 3 artist amplifier, Fender GTX 100 amplifier, and Valeton GP 200 effects board to my Scarlet audio interface. I know that I can use the 1/4” inch jacks into the rear of the Scarlet.

My question is my amplifiers an effects board have XLR output jacks. Can I connect an XLR to XLR cable directly into the front 4 ports of the Scarlett 18i16? I know that those 4 ports are combination jacks that can do both XLR and 1/4” but they also have preamps for microphone. I didn’t know if I’m able to use those for line level connections with an XLR cable directly to an amplifier effects boards. I don’t want to damage anything by making the wrong connections.

Appreciate any help as I’m new to home studio recording and can’t seem to find an answer in the manual.

What equipment do I need?

Hi everyone! I've loved writing little songs since I was tiny, and I want to start recording some of the stuff I've written and putting it online.

But, I have basically ZERO experience with recording equipment, so I need help with my set-up, haha!

Could y'all help me figure out what I need to record decently but not break the bank?

My songs are typically a base of piano and vocals (and I plan to add some percussion and maybe some other basic instruments depending on the song).

I currently have a Casio CT-X3000 but no idea how to use it for recording 😅 However, I'd like to be able to record the piano from it right into my phone on bandlab and then listen to the piano when I sing and record the vocals. Phone is a Samsung S9. (Edit to add: I'll likely get an iPhone at some point so it'd be great if these options could work for an iPhone & Garageband too).

Any ideas?

ChatGPT recommended this mobile audio interface (though I see it doesn't have great reviews on Amazon, so I think I need something different) https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SREA2U--saramonic-sr-ea2u-usb-c-mobile-audio-interface

And this cord: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CMS110--hosa-1-8-inch-trs-to-1-4-inch-trs-stereo-interconnect-cable-10-foot?cond=CMS110d1

Along with these headphones: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HPM1000--behringer-hpm1000-multi-purpose-headphones

What would y'all recommend? I love the idea of like $60 price point, but I also know you get what you pay for.

*Cross-posted

TLDR: Have a Casio CT-X3000 keyboard and a Samsung S9 smartphone with BandLab. What cords/equipment would I need to record decent sounding songs with piano, vocals, and some percussion? Would love to keep it under $200.

Makeshift studio gear list

Hey! So long story short, i had a studio in a venue i ran, burned down, super shitty.

We have a new place now and i’m slowly getting some new stuff, some things are a drastic downgrade but gotta keep on going.

I need some help with double checking with what i have now and if i’m missing something. Got the feeling i’m missing something.

So i’m running my macbook for now with stacked audio interfaces so 16 channels. It’s less than i’m used to but i’ll live with that.
I’ve got 2 small analog desks that i’m using as preamps (i can bypass the preamp of my interface and just use the converter) with dsub cables.

For monitoring for musicians i’m thinking of one of those behringer HA8000 things. Not ideal, i used fo have a p16 set but that’s too expensive for now. Other ideas?
I do have enough of the same headphones (770’s 80ohm, and one of those vic firth things for drummers who need something like that)

I’ve got some kali in8’s for now, they’re pretty decent actually! And they’re standing on nice firm stands.

From the desks i’m running a 16 channel snake to the part of the room where the band plays (separate live and control rooms are coming in the future)

From there i have a selection of stands, mics, di’s, reamp boxes, stuff etc. looking for a recommendation on a cool not too expensive pencil condenser, thinking of an older akg 451 or an oktava mk012. Anything else anyone would recommend?

I’ve got a crapload of good cables, power leads, headphone extension cords, pop filters, guitar pedals, percussion stuff, some small keyboards that i modified.

I’m building some gobo’s and smaller panels next week. I’ve got stage curtains, rugs.

I do not have any outboard yet. I’m still thinking about where to restart there. And saving money haha.

There are bright lights for setting up and warmer/darker lamps for recording. We can cook there, there’s a fridge. Places to hang inside and outside.

What am i missing? Thanks in advance

Kush Audio UBK-2 vs UBK-1, thoughts?

I've been working with V1 for a few years, and a few months ago I finally got my hands on V2. While I'm happy by the added features and the expanded possibilities, I still can't seem to get it to sound quite like V1.

V2 is definitely capable of things that V1 simply couldn't do, like controlling attack and release or the eq section.. But for some reason, to my ears it lacks the immediacy and directness that made V1 so enjoyable to work with. V1 always felt very straightforward: a few controls, quick decisions, and I was already where I wanted to be. With V2, I sometimes feel like I spend more time understanding the relationships between the different blocks than actually shaping the sound.

It could be that I just need more time to fully grasp the architecture and workflow before it really clicks. I'm curious whether this is simply a learning curve issue of mine or if others have had a similar experience.

For those of you who've spent a good amount of time with both versions: do you find yourself preferring V2 overall, or do you still miss something about the simplicity and character of V1?

Best XLR mic under €250 for Pop/Indie vocals in an UNTREATED room? (Upgrading AT2020)

Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my vocal microphone setup. My main goal is to record indie/pop songs that I actually want to finalize, mix, and officially release.

Right now, I am using an Audio-Technica AT2020 plugged into an audio interface, tracking inside FL Studio. Don't get me wrong, the AT2020 sounds decent for the price, but my recordings just don't feel "professional."

The biggest issue I'm facing is my environment. I am recording in a completely untreated room (lots of bare walls and natural echo), and my PC tower sits right next to me, so the condenser mic is picking up a ton of background fan hiss and room reflections. It's ruining my mixes when I try to apply compression and reverb later.

I need something that will give me a clean, radio-ready studio quality but is excellent at ignoring background noise and room echo. I don't need any USB features or built-in DSP apps, as I do all my mixing with EQ and plugins directly inside my DAW.

My absolute maximum budget is €250.

I’ve been heavily looking into the Shure MV7X since it's a dynamic mic and apparently shares the SM7B DNA for blocking room noise, but I’ve also looked at options like the AT2040, AT4040, or Rode NT series.

Given my untreated bedroom and PC fan noise, is the Shure MV7X my best bet for commercial pop vocals, or is there another dynamic microphone under €250 I should consider?

Thanks in advance for the help!

How can I record my keyboard sound to the computer/DAW?

Hey guys, I really wanted to know how people record themselves playing an instrument, mainly a keyboard and how they throw it on the computer. I don't wanna use Midi or a plugin to do so, I wanna capture the exact tone and the way I'm playing. Do they use a microphone? Wires? I don't know if I managed to explain it right, it's just that I can't afford realistic plugins, and I find it easier to play the audio of me playing live to my a DAW.

How to record acoustic covers with just the phone?

I noticed that my acoustic guitar sounds kinda super dull and dead on phone recordings. The voice sounds okay.

The problem is that I want to put the phone in front of me, play, sing and cover songs. I want to record both audio and video. How and where do you place the phone such that the audio doesn’t sound bad?

I have a condenser mic. Should I just set that up beside the phone and use the audio from that mic in place of the iphone’s mic?
