What to look for in an audio interface?

I’m in guitar center right now. I know everything I need to get for recording except audio interface. So before I buy one, what features should I look for? What interfaces should I avoid? I’m hoping to spend less than 200 on one, but I may be willing to spend more if it’s worth it. Help me out

Basically the title. I have a song that sounds fucking incredible in headphones but as soon as i flip it into mono within logic the guitars sound quiet and not very good. A Compact Recording Setup for Guitar Players

I love playing my guitar in the backyard at night and was getting really frustrated with the solutions in front of me for recording ideas as they came up. Using Voice Memos on my phone was great for when I had a riff I wanted to capture, but as most of you know, you can't do anything more in terms of looping/playback or adding a second track. The other version was dragging out my laptop and launching Logic Pro and hooking up a preamp and mic - which was cumbersome and hard to set up comfortably in the space I like to play in.

SO, I came up with a third path that I wanted to share with this group since I haven't seen anything else out there like it. Two weeks into using it and I love it, it's made it way easier to capture and record ideas and develop songs.

My requirements were the following:

  • Could be rolled out when I was using it and stowed away easily when not in use
  • low to the ground (since I play on a low sofa),
  • had some multichannel recording
  • easy to mic
  • had an integrated guitar stand
  • had a small amplifier
  • worked for acoustic or electric guitars
  • storage for guitar miscellany,
  • could work in the dark
  • could be plugged into 110V

Here's the component list for anyone that wants to build their own:

Old Focusrite

Hi all - I’m looking to get a first gen 18i20 - used for around £150.

Firstly I was wondering, since this is an old piece of gear, will I have problems plugging it into a new MacBook Air with M2 chip?

Secondly, brand new Behringer UMC 1820 retail around 220£ - is this a significant upgrade in terms of latency, software etc?

For context - my set up is increasing in size and my desk is a snakes wedding - I was hoping to tackle this with either a mixer or an interface with more connections. I’m currently preferring the interface route as it would allow stereo recording and monitoring of multiple things.

reddit.com

Gonna start recording songs with vocals and instruments. This is my list so far. Any tips or recommendations?

Focusrite Scarlett solo or 2i2
AT2020
XLR cable
Mic Stand
Maybe headphones (already have some)
Maybe usb type b for electric drums

Help!

Okay so I have a problem,
I have my interface set up in amped roots, but I’m not able to hear it through anything (other than asio mode) without extreme latency.

**Yes, im aware of the buffer settings DO NOT REPLY WITH TS**

I want to be able to hear my guitar without latency, while using my pc as the output instead of the interface itself, so that I can then connect the audio through OBS and into my stream, while still being able to hear it myself. (Either though my headphones or through a speaker yada yada)

So my question is: can I use VoiceMeeter Banana as an alternative asio, and how would I go about that.

Thanks! 😭

Selling a Whisper Room MDL 4260S in the Bay Area, CA ~ motivated seller

Hello to the Talent,

I am currently looking to sell my Whisper Room located in Oakland CA, near Lake Merritt. This is an urgent matter and I would love to have a new home for it by this weekend or sooner. It would need to be picked up locally and location details can be shared with legitimately interested buyers (although I will consider shipping it to somewhere on the west coast to nearby states if needed. We would have to work out those details).

This model has remote fan units for quiet air filtration, red sound foam for the interior, and I will include the desk and Apogee microphone with stand that fits nicely inside the unit. Exact measurements and specs can be found on the Whisper Room site. The only minor issue would be the velcro rectangles on the ceiling attachment for the multicolored/white lights would need to be restuck and reattached.

I bought this unit brand new for around $7000 so I'm asking for $3,500. Payment however must be in electronic transfer.

It does need to be picked up locally, and you will need a vehicle with enough space to transport the pieces which would need around 6 feet of space. I will be willing to help disassemble but an extra set of hands would be ideal for loading into your vehicle, etc. Let me know if interested!

Amplifying a USB Mic

I bought the Samson C01uPRO usb mic a couple months ago. I really wanted something I could plug into my iPhone and record. But it’s too quiet and I’m not sure what to do about amplifying it. Do you have any suggestions?

User friendly beginner DAW recommendation for recording real instruments?

Hey all, I'm an older dude who has played guitar/bass/drums most of my life and I am just getting caught up with technology lol. I really want to start putting my songs together as my one man band but am having trouble finding a one stop shop for this.

I have an electronic drum kit and a Spark 2 amp for my guitar/bass, but having trouble interfacing on the PC at all. Any direction to get me started would be awesome, thanks!!

My vocals are too quiet compared to backing track

Hi, I'm new to recording music and recently I've been having some trouble with recording vocals for my covers. I mostly use Cakewalk Next as my DAW and connect it to my audio interface (Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD) with the mic plugged in. I hear myself clearly on my headphones during the takes, and once I finish the recording and listen to it, there's barelyyyy any volume on the vocals. Turning up the volume of the recording in the DAW does nothing, same as turning up the gain on my mic. I don't know what to do.. Could you folks help?

Bonus question, if anyone knows an answer:

Some time ago I've recorded a cover, back when the volume problem wasn't a thing, but after saving the audio to MP3 I mostly hear the recording in my left earphone (the right barely plays any of the recording). What could be the cause?

Work with what I got - Drum Recording

Hey**,** so I'm trying to work with the philosophy of it's the music that matters, and not the gear so I've been trying to repurpose as many mics as I have that I own for other things to work. With that being said: I am trying to get a more vintage late 60s drum sound like Hendrix or the Zombies.

My background has always been acoustic guitar and vocals only.

My kit - mid 2000s Tama Imperial Star with Sabian XSR Commuter Cymbal Set

Mics:

Kick Drum - AKG P2 Bought for bass mic but I think should work great here? - planning to put just outside of the port hole to get a little more boom and less thud

Snare - SM 57 angled about 2 inches of the side of the top. An old t-shirt cut into a circle placed over the top head and an Evans o ring being used.

OH - matching pair of Rhode M5s I use for acoustic guitar. Will do the same distance to each side of kit based off snare drum to avoid phase, about 4 feet above?

Hi tom - SM 58

Mid Tom - Phonic UM 99 Running out of mics here.. haha

Floor Tom - SM7b (a gift to me once for recording vocals, probably my best mic I own, but probably better on floor tom vs snare? )

All tom mics, angled and placed about 2 inch above rim of each side of drum.

Recording into the M-Audio Air 192 / 14. Used Cakewalk most of my life, and now trying Cubase because band lab went off the deep end.

Any tips of placement or if I'm making any glaring mistakes? All the above is what I've been able to gather from youtube vids of how to record drums.

Last note - I record in my basement and will only have very short times to capture because I have a newborn. Main reason for posting here are I don't have the time luxury of time to compare and contrast a million different set ups. When the kiddo is on a walk with mom, it's go time for me.

UPDATE: after all of your the feedback, I think I will be going try and simplify with doing the Glynn Johns method. I'll be doing the M5s as the overheads respectively, the SM 57 on the kick, and the SM7b on the Snare (just in case I meed more stare)

Music Tech

Need some help.

I’m a musician and have gained inspiration from an artist I love and was wondering about a particular set up.

If I were to use a microphone, a harmoniser pedal for the vocals, an acoustic guitar, and an electric kick pad, how would I set something like that up with amps/speakers? What would I need?

How does Fred Again.. record live without IEMs?

There are a few live performance videos he does where he's not wearing in ears and it looks like he's monitoring with just studio monitors. But he's recording vocals as well, so I don't get how he's doing that without getting feedback or at least tons of bleed in the vocal track.

Here are a few examples of what I'm talking about:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5JitOUDdXw
https://youtu.be/H2I6V0NlaHg?si=F6XUsCLi05bIxs7k

Maybe there is lots of bleed but it just gets covered by the rest of the music anyway?

Let’s talk MPC One production with other music genres

I just picked up a One G2. I know there’s a ton of support and discussion here for hip hop and related genres, as well as finger drumming. However, I’d love to chat about other genres such as house, chill and pop. How are people using the MPC to produce, mix and master original and remix projects all within the One?

Microphone Placement for Santour

Hey Everyone! I am trying to find. Good mic to record my santour and also for performances and was considering getting a mic that is small that sticks to my instrument. anyone here record and/or play santour and use a mic? If so, what mics, set up, or if you use a small mic, do you use and how do you set it to record your playing? What settings do you use on music softwares like Logic Pro X to record clean sound and audio?

Thank you for your responses in advance!!

Mixing drums in Audition — the stock-plugin chain I actually use (no paid plugins)

Long-time drum recorder here. I mixed my last few tracks entirely in Audition, and a surprising number of people still assume Audition "can't do music." It absolutely can — you just have to treat it like a multitrack editor, not a traditional DAW.

The main elements of the chain that's been working for me:

  1. Parametric EQ first — carve the low-mid mud out of the kick and toms before you boost anything. Audition's built-in parametric is genuinely enough for this; I don't reach for paid EQ on drums at all.
  2. Gate the snare before compressing — otherwise the compressor is just amplifying bleed from the rest of the kit.
  3. Compression last, subtle — roughly 3:1, just to glue the kit together. Nothing heavier needed.

The point of the whole thing: you don't need a plugin suite for a pro drum tone in Audition. The stock tools do far more than people give them credit for.

I recorded a full walkthrough of the workflow with before/after A/B comparisons if you want to hear it in practice:

https://youtu.be/L5J9gr69EMs

Happy to answer anything on the chain — always keen to compare notes with other Audition drum people.
