Finally built it - email PDFs, Word documents, etc. to Remarkable!

Hey everyone. I'm a lawyer and I use Remarkable all the time to review documents for work, sign letters, take notes, etc. I came across this thread a couple of weeks ago because I was in court for trial, the judge ordered both sides to work something out, and the other side emailed me a draft of the document to review and to let him know if I have any changes. I thought--great job for my Remarkable but no such luck, and I ended up just reading and annotating it on my iPad instead (I bring a lot of gadgets to court).

In any event, it got me thinking since I code and make websites as a hobby that it would have been cool if there were a way that I could have just forwarded the email to my Remarkable but, as you know, it doesn't exist. I see that some people have tried to create something in the past, but nothing that looked secure or could also handle MS Word documents which I use a lot because I review a lot of draft documents, mark them up with changes, etc.

So I spent the last couple of weeks after work putting something together and would love if you would check it out and give me your comments and tell me what you think. Simply put, you create a custom email address that you can forward files to--PDFs, Word docs, Excel, PowerPoint, and, of course, ePub (although I'm not sure anyone actually uses ePub)--and it puts the files right on your Remarkable. I spent a lot of time giving it bells and whistles like auto converting MS Office files to PDF, choosing the folder the docs arrive in as opposed to just crowding the "my files" section, ensuring only "approved" senders can e-mail to avoid spam, and because of my background, making sure that everything is encrypted and private so that it's safe to use for real workflows, no one can read it in transit, copies are wiped the moment it is delivered to the Remarkable, etc. Also, through a lot of tweaking (and server upgrades) I was able to iron out the kinks and got it to the point where if the Remarkable is turned on and connected to wifi, that the file arrives as quickly as 15 seconds after the email sends which, personally, I thought was awesome since I'm super impatient. I also toyed with having it auto-OCR PDFs en route, but it was very server intensive and expensive so maybe in the next version.

Anyway, it's called sendtoremarkable.com (and I guess a clever name, or at least I thought it was clever, "by NeuralSoft Systems") and if you could give me some feedback that would be awesome! Although I very ambitiously put a "paid tier" to try to recoup some of the monthly server costs which are surprisingly expensive, feel free to sign up for the free one. I enabled it so that everyone automatically gets the "Professional" tier for the first 15 days which, given the server cost, is the tier with Microsoft Office capability and all the bells and whistles, but after that you can auto-revert to the free tier if you'd like. No credit card required, no strings attached, just a cool tool that if I can eventually get a few people to sign up and pay to cover the server costs I can keep it up and running.

Last thing, it goes without saying that I don't work for Remarkable, I'm not affiliated with Remarkable, my website isn't endorsed by Remarkable, etc. I'm just a techy-guy who knows how to code and thought I'd problem solve and see if I can make the Remarkable which I otherwise love even more useful. Thanks!

rM2 vs rMPP vs rMPPure - Coming from Supernote Manta

Hi all!

I am currently a year or so into using a Supernote Manta and I love the product. Don't get me wrong, this tablet is great and I use it as my daily driver for all my work and meeting notes. For context, I used to be that guy with more than 5 notebooks each for a different topic or work group so having this kind of device has really helped streamline my workflow into one system.

My dilemma now is that -- I cannot seem to get myself to adapt and adjust to the Supernote's "hyper-organized" ecosystem. I initially used Headings the wrong way and it really messed up my TOC as it would recognize "highlighted words" I'd put headings on which were not really supposed to belong to the TOC or I did not see myself using the Stars or Keywords or Digest function at all. Call me a perfectionist but honestly, I haven't really found any good use for them as I prefer flipping through my notes as a good way to recap whatever I've previously written.

I decided on getting the Manta based on user reviews and I would like to know what the group thinks and feels on rM's note taking ecosystem as a whole.

  • I would still prefer to create separate folders and inside each folder, separate notebooks
  • I would like "Headings" to be highlighted but really, I just prefer the Headings to denote something important or a new Section of text within my notes to enter a different topic
  • Color isn't really something that's a deal-breaker for me. I can live without it. However, I do understand that the rMPP has better hardware than the rM2 which is discontinued.
  • Supernote's syncing is painful. I'm always on-the-go and I would like my documents and notes synced in an instant. Is this true for reMarkable?
  • I like that rM has a magnet on the side versus a pen loop like the Supernotes. Looks more professional and loop is often bothersome as my pen "hooks" onto different things in-transit. How's the magnet strength? Do the Markers break and would need replacement with just one drop?
  • What is the consensus on the rMPP vs rM2? I have read a lot of posts regarding ghosting issues and flickering screens. I was spoiled with the Manta in a sense that we had a "force refresh" gesture which would refresh the entire screen and it would clear out any and all ghosting from repositioning text or deleting words, etc.
  • I think I'm looking for something of better build quality. The Manta was paper thin and I loved it but it felt like I was using a toy sometimes...

I'm currently looking at available refurbished deals on the rM website and the price is "Okay" (still expensive) but definitely not in the market for something brand new.

...or should I just stick to my Manta and wait maybe 1-2 years for rM to release a new device with new technology which would succeed the PaperPro?

Would love to hear your thoughts! Sorry for the hodgepodge bullets. Just wrote what I thought this instant without thinking of the construction whatsoever :P

Forever Pen 1 month review

I posted this on the remarkable sub and got banned for it. I didn't realize it broke the sub rules. Mods, if this violated the sub rules here please let me know and I'll take it down.

I received the Forever Pen at a steep discount for this review. My opinions are my own and the discount provided does not influence my opinion (at least as far as I can tell). I had been interested in the Forever Pen for a while but the cost held me back from buying it. The sub says I have to add the Self Promotion flair but I'm not promoting myself in any way, just fyi.

*TLDR* Smooth writing with a good feel on the metal alloy tip. Steep at full retail price but well worth it for those who value consistent pen feel.

HOLDING THE PEN: At first blush, the Forever Pen ("FP") is significantly lighter than the Remarkable Marker Plus ("RMP"). It took a couple days of use to get familiar with the lighter feel. It wasn't bad, just very different. The FP is marketed as a pen that "feels like nothing at all." I would say that is accurate in terms of how it feels in hand. It is also wider than the RMP which makes it more comfortable for writing at length.

WRITING FEEL: Using the FP feels a bit stiffer than the RMP since it is a metal tip instead of soft plastic. It feels more precise. Like using a sharp pen instead of a soft pencil.

VALUE: The FP is definitely a premium experience compared to the RMP. I tend to take short notes on my tablet. For that purpose, either pen will do. However, head to head, FP is the better pen.

Handwriting gone!

Hi all, I’m having an issue with my devices (pp, ppm) where when I open a file the handwriting is gone. All of my handwritten notes on a pdf, gone. Handwriting files I for brainstorming, gone. I’m a writer and was developing a story idea and the pages of notes are all gone. Now just blank pages. I’ve tried toggling the layers on and off but it does nothing for the actual handwriting. The handwriting never shows back up.

Also, I can see handwriting in the icon for the file but when I open the files the writing is gone. Really freaking out about this as I have not only my writer work in there but work for clients. I’ve written to Remarkable and they’re looking into it but it can take 5-10 days but in the meantime I have work do for clients and I need the notes! This is a nightmare as I’ve gone all in with Remarkable for some time now so everything is handwritten there. Anyone else run into this or know of a fix? I literally can’t open anything else file without all of the handwriting being erased.
