Salt Spring Island by Foot

I don't have a vehicle, but I would like to visit Salt Spring Island. Is it relatively easy to walk around Salt Spring Island on foot? I am thinking of taking a ferry to Fulford Harbour and then walking along Beaver Point Road to my destination, which is near Beaver Point Hall. Is the walk challenging or dangerous? Thank you in advance.

Salt Spring Island by bike

Doable in a fun way? I’ve booked an Airbnb on Salt Spring (still fully refundable so can change my mind!) for a couple nights in a few weeks. Wondering if the island is fun to sightsee on without a car. I’ve read that it can be hilly. I’m a strong cyclist and don’t mind some hills but if it’s all killer I’d consider just going over with a car. But I much prefer biking!

More than anything I’m looking to relax and get outside in a new place for a couple days, rather than feeling like I need to see or do everything/anything in particular.

Considering also doing a day trip to Mayne Island from Salt Spring (again by bike only), so any insight there also appreciated. Thanks!

Update: thank you everyone for your generous insights!! I feel very forewarned and am opting for a car and will scope out the roads on this trip to see if I’d want to bring a bike another time!

Is anyone travelling to saltspring island from Vancouver on Aug 14 or 15?

Big shot in the dark but as the title says, looking for anyone who is travelling from Vancouver to saltspring island. Hoping that they will be able to bring a pair of climbing shoes over! Beating myself for forgetting them 😭

I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Tell me about the good and the bad about living in Vancouver Island and smaller islands

Seriously considering a move to Vancouver Island or one of the smaller islands, but want to make an informed move.

I’ve heard that theres a doctor shortage and that there are issues with health care. I’ve heard housing costs are an issue, as well as various other taxes. I’ve also heard that crime and drugs are an issue on parts of the island. Gas and grocery prices, are they more expensive on the island than in other parts of BC/Canada?

I’m living in Alberta and not enjoying being here, but know that nowhere is perfect. I have lived in the city and smaller towns in Alberta and haven’t enjoyed the climate, the politics, the massive growth (development) and the health care issues here.

Work can come with me as I work remotely so that’s not an issue.

I want to know the good and the bad from people who live on the island/ islands.

Thanks in advance!

Talk to me about The Big One. It's scaring me out of this decision.

I'm from Alberta and thinking about moving to Vancouver Island or one of the smaller islands. I love the idea of it until I start thinking about earthquakes, especially the cascadian fault "pending" earthquake that's all over the internet. The threat of "The Big One" (earthquake) scares me, but I'm from Alberta. We have heatwaves, wildfires, tornadoes, hailstorms and wicked blizzards and freezing temperatures. Is an earthquake enough reason not to move out west?

Essentially, am I experiencing fear of the unknown when I live somewhere where natural disasters are just as (or maybe more) likely?

Is it silly to not move to the west coast because of fear of the earthquake?
