Why are holiday weekends the foggiest?

I swear without fail she rolls in the hardest whenever a 3 day comes along. Such a cruel trick Mother Nature plays on those of us that work a standard 40 and the tourists. She’s a cruel cruel mistress

Lyft advance driver accepted and no-showed

I had a stupid early flight and a Lyft driver accepted it days in advance and never showed up. The driver name was something like “Adeyelo”. I had a panicked drive to SFO and a very expensive parking charge. All Lyft offered me was $15. Be warned.

Privacy's Defender: EFF's Executive Director, Cindy Cohn on Fending Off the Threat of the Surveillance State in Santa Cruz

Privacy’s Defender: Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Executive Director Cindy Cohn’s Journey Inside the Privacy Battles That Shaped Today’s Internet.

Cindy Cohn has devoted her life to the fight for digital rights. She’s tangled with federal officials to keep our online conversations secure from the government’s prying eyes, fought to ensure that you are told when your information has been turned over to the government, and argued before judges to protect our right to speak and to share science and knowledge on the internet.

In Privacy’s Defender: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance (MIT Press), Cindy weaves her own personal story with her role as a leading legal voice representing the rights and interests of technology users, innovators, whistleblowers, and researchers during the Crypto Wars of the 1990s, battles over NSA’s dragnet internet spying revealed in the 2000s, and the fight against FBI gag orders.

Dogs in Grocery Stores

Earlier today in the Safeway on Mission I witnessed a small white dog floor while its owner was busy scanning items jump up on someone else checking out (in front of an employee no less) and then proceed to run out of the self checkout and down the main walkway at the front of the store.

Why is this so common nowadays? I've also seen people with dogs trying to enter the Trader Joe's downtown although to their credit a security guard has stopped them each time.

Can we all rent a house together?!

The rent is crazy, I know there could be a few of us that could work together to all find housing collectively…ugh.

We all meet in this thread. We can all rent a house together- find others to rent with.
Like a hang out in a coffee shop! Mingle in the thread and potentially find your future housemate? Lol

Sigh- We’re all trying here.

If you've had an incident with this dog at Schwann Lake Park (edited to remove "doxxing" info)

If you have had an incident with this dog, Buddy, please report it to
Animal Control +1 (831) 566-8829 and State Parks +1 (831) 212-7672

Today was my 10th incident with this (black and tan shepard/husky looking mix)dog and owner and I know I'm not alone. Enough is enough.

Everyone wants details. Details went to law enforcement. I'm not here for gossip. But yes, he attacks dogs frequently and is not always leashed. Owner is irresponsible, elderly, and can't control the dog when he's off leash. She thinks saying "sorry, have a nice day," is an appropriate response.

All I want is for her to leash the dog and for people to report their incidents to the above agencies.

Santa Cruz Together, your local real estate PAC endorsed Ryan Coonerty, Scott Newsome, and Renee Golder so now you know who *not* to vote for.

This real estate PAC is responsible for killing the empty homes tax (Measure N a few years back) and many of their members brought about the Measure B (the "alternative" to Measure C, the affordable housing measure from 2025). If you are a renter, or, someone who does not want greater real estate taxes, now you know who to *not* vote for.

Keep in mind that it was the real estate industry locally who pushed (and got) in Measure C a parcel tax aspect, when it was originally envisioned as exclusively a transfer tax in the two year preparation, complete with community meetings to collect input. So not only did the real estate industry put up Measure B, but used Measure C to pull from the pockets of homeowners who are not even selling their homes.

SIDEQUEST: Notably also, Measure C does not contain any requirements for project labor agreements (PLAs) for affordable housing projects that are using Measure C money. I don't know if that is the fault of Santa Cruz Together, but, developers are typically anti-worker, anti-union. Steve Eggert, the founder of Anton Devco (which built the Anton Pacific) bitterly complained about paying prevailing wages for a framer in Santa Cruz, comparing that with wages in a whole other state, in a public meeting. traffic safety issue- Frederick St. at Broadway

I need to vent about this intersection. Frederick St. at Broadway.

For some reason, (and I've lived in neighborhood for a long time and seen it this way, but getting way worse) when drivers are headed eastbound on Broadway and they come to Frederick St., they seem to roll the stop sign and/or cut their turn when proceeding. The distance in the intersection is a bit shorter in that direction, so maybe that is what is causing the problem, I'm not sure. I've had numerous encounters where I come to a complete stop heading either north or south on Frederick and the driver turning from Broadway doesn't wait their turn. Just in the last week I have been almost hit by two separate older women in this exact scenario. When I stoped short in front of them and honked they were acting mad at me!
**If you are heading east on Broadway and you stop at this interesection, you don't have some magic right-of-way just because the intersection is shorter distance in that direction.** you have to wait your turn just like everyone else at any normal three or four way stop sign interesection.

In addition to what I described, this interesection is crazy for bikers not stopping as they cross into the Arana Gulch bike path. Granted, many bikers do stop, but I've had a ton of near misses when I come to a complete stop in my car, and then start to proceed but have to slam on the brakes for a biker zooming through.

Please be careful out there and do all of us a favor and come to a complete stop, wait your turn to cross, whether in a car or on a bike. thank you.

Advocates rally in Live Oak in support of rail, urge RTC to keep tracks intact

I wish I could have been there, but had to work.

> The rally largely stems from the RTC’s decision last December to build 8 miles of the Coastal Rail Trail over the tracks rather than next to them as was previously planned.

> The move signified a major reversal from the long-standing plans, and has heightened concern among rail advocates that it is the first step toward the death of passenger rail, especially if the tracks are removed.

> County voters soundly rejected 2022’s Measure D, which would have included plans for a trail without rail service in the county’s general plan. Of the votes cast, 73% were against Measure D.
