dress form questions

hey everyone was planning to make the bootstrap dress form and had some questions before i went ahead

for the filling is it best to use polyfill? or memory foam chunks i found some online amazon but which would be ideal to hold the shape?
and around how many lbs or kg would i need ? for like the half dress form with no arms

and another question is what did u guys use for the base? i found like a coat hanger but what have u guys seen work better? and should the dress form be taller than me or similar hight ?

any suggestions or links or anything would be much appreciated!! thanks

helpp why is my machine not sewing stitches and the needle is also tilted? i tried adjusting the needle lever and everything, its still bent at a slight angle. and my stitches arent sticking to the fabric even after replacing the needle, rethreading the machine, rethreading bobbin, and adjusting the tension. about to throw the machine away entirely ugh

Do I need to hem the bottom of this dress?

First dress, or clothing at all I've really ever sewn to wear. I made my own pattern, less than a year sewing anything at all so, I really am just making it up as I go. I am also hoping to wear this to a wedding 4 days from now.

I still have to do some minor fit adjustments, and I was intending to hem the bottom of the skirt, but I like the way it drapes as it is and am worried the hem might mess it up. The cut turned out surprisingly clean and the fabric doesn't seem to be fraying much at all. Will I regret it if I don't hem it? Or is it okay to just leave the raw edge?

Zipper help

Anyone know how to fix the plastic part at the bottom of the zipper? It gets snagged when inserting into the other side because of this rip. Tried glue but it won’t fit into the other side if it has anything on it.
Got some “repair” piece of Temu that is essentially a small plastic piece you slide over the whole bottom but has no adhesive or anything so no idea how to adhere or use it.
Help!

Facing vs bias-bound armholes and necklines

Hey there, I am a fairly new sewer and wanted to get some advice on how you determine whether to bias-bind or use facings for necklines and armholes.

Every time I do a facing, and I don't know if it's the interfacing I am using, although I am using exactly the ones recommended in the pattern, or if it's my technique, but they always look and act so stiff. And even with understitching they will flip out completely (for a neckline facing) or peek out (for an armhole facing).

To get around this I tried to fully line a bodice by using the pattern pieces and the burrito method. That worked fairly well for that project, but there are other Summery projects that would not work for.

I was thinking of going to the fabric shop and either buying a bunch of different cloured pre-made bias binding so I can have cheeky contrast colour in the bound edges if they do flip it will look intentional? Or to get a bias binding making tool thingy to make bias tape out of the fashion fabric.

Does anyone have any tips on how I could know when reading/looking at a pattern if I could change it to fully lined or to bias bind, when it tells me to do facings?

Do these stitches look right?

Just picked up my (new to me) vintage singer 401a from being serviced and these are the stitches he tested. I feel like they should be straight? I bought the machine from someone who inherited it that didn’t use it and wasn’t sure if its last service. So I took it in to have general maintenance done. He said he “cleaned, lubricated, checked timing and tension and ran a stitch pattern.” There are a lot of places that still seem dirty, but maybe he meant internally? I’ve never had a machine serviced before since I’m new to sewing and have only used my new janome for roughly a year. Not sure if I should have asked for more details 🫠 these are the stitches he ran. Advice?

Can this coil zipper be repaired by hand

Can this coil zipper be repaired by hand sewing and re-attached to the zipper tape? This is roughly a 56" zipper on a custom leather guitar gig-bag. Replacing the entire zipper is the only solution offered so far after two inquiries. I don't know if replacing a zipper on this uncommon product requires specialized equipment. The original maker lives in Texas and returning it to him for repairing is not practical. I'm hoping to keep it simple and learn that, yes, it can be repaired by hand. If it turns out that it cannot, I'll try to find a place that can replace the zipper. Any recommendations for a shop in the Seattle / Kitsap / Puget Sound region would be welcome. Thank you.

someone please help me before i fight my sewing machine

Hey everybody, i’ve got a singer promise model 1408.

so basically it’s been a little shit since december

- it unthreads itself
- stops sewing and makes a weird noise
- will sew a little bit and then the top thread snaps out of the needle
- i’ve changed the needle twice
- i’ve rethreaded the machine
- i’ve redone the bobbin
- i’ve used different thread
- i’ve used every stitch length
- i’ve used needles 90/14 and 80/11 neither worked

i’ve got needles:
- 100/16
- 70/9
- 110/18
- 90/14
- 80/11

only thing it sews is this purple fabric and it’s driving me insane someone please help me because i’m dying to sew things and i can’t with this stupid fucking sewing machine

BOBBIN winding error Singer Brilliance 6180

Hi yall
I'm looking for some help while troubleshooting my Singer Brilliance 6180. I have been servicing my machine, oiling it and removing any loose threads and lint. I have run into an issue when loading a bobbin with a new thread. When the bobbin threading is engaged (moved to the right), the empty spool for the bobbin will spin for a moment, loading some of the thread and then abruptly stop. When it stops, it displays a C4 error. Looking at the manual for this machine, C4 error only displays when the BOTTOM BOBBING PLATE IS TRAPPED WITH THREAD. When inspecting the bobbing threader and the bobbing case, there does not appear to be any trapped thread.
It also sews completely normal when it is set to the left. So it seems like an error specifically relating to Bobbin threading with new thread.
Has anyone come across this issue?

edit: The belt seems to be correctly in place and in good condition. I have already corrected the timing between the top and bottom thread so it's not related to that either.
whats odd also is when I set the top spool to the left, it does not display the spooling symbol that looks like this

][ as seen in this image

What am I doing wrong?

My machine keeps having by periods where the stitch is incomplete. I’m going slow, nothing is snagging, I’ve rethreaded multiple times. Any thoughts?

Should lower thread be over the bobbin if threaded correctly?

Hey guys, I’m a beginner. It always feels like I’m doing 1 hour of trouble shooting my machine before I can ever do any sewing. My machine is brand new, it’s a brother XR9550. I’ve attached photos to show what I am talking about. If my lower thread was feed correctly would the string come over the bobbin?

what is causing this jam?

i am using a singer heavy duty sewing machine with heavy duty thread. i thought it was a tension problem as i am sewing with a denim, but even after several attempts of adjusting it, it still jams. i was able to get it work a few times after cleaning and rethreading, but now its jamming again. I saw other people on here with similar problems and they were told to pull the bobbin thread back; i made sure to pull the thread back but the problem still persists.

The ruffle on a bonnet: am I overthinking it?

Hi! I'm making a bonnet like this one to match a gothic dress I have, and now trying to make the front ruffle exactly this way: I like that it isn't too "widespread", unlike the "windcatcher" type of bonnet I made some years ago 😅

I'm starting to think that the ruffle here is not just a straight gathered bias-cut stripe tapered at the ends, but more like a circle-shaped detail (not sure if I explain it well enough, I mean when you draft a circle and take a "bagel" of the desired width from it). Therefore there's not much bulk where it attaches to the rest of the bonnet.

Or am I really overthinking and it *is* indeed a tapered stripe detail?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the likely confusing description!
