SFPUC Utility Worker General Laborer

Currently work for Caltrans as a Highway Maintenance Worker and recently got an interview with SFPUC for a General Laborer position.
The work honestly lines up pretty closely with what I already do now:
traffic control
brush clearing
chainsaw/weed eater work
outdoor labor
roadway/public infrastructure work
working around traffic and hazardous environments

The thing making me nervous is the position is listed as “Temporary Provisional Permanent Civil Service.” From what I understand, I’d be hired provisionally and would later need to pass/compete in the civil service process to become permanent.
I already have a permanent state job with Caltrans, so leaving that stability for a provisional role makes me nervous.

For anyone who works for SFPUC or the City/County of SF:
How risky are provisional positions really?
Do most provisional employees eventually become permanent if they perform well?
What does the civil service exam/process usually look like for General Laborer positions?
Would you personally leave a permanent Caltrans position for this opportunity?
Also curious about quality of life, commute burnout, overtime, and long-term opportunities within SFPUC.
Appreciate any honest insight.

Hi everyone!

I’m not so patiently waiting to hear back about an interview for the SF Gardener Apprenticeship. Has anyone navigated this process and would be willing to share tips or insight on the interview/testing, or the job? Any insight is appreciated and valued! 🙏🏻🙌

SF Firefighters

Hi everyone! I’m a college student and I have to interview three firefighters for my term paper. The three firefighters must be from three separate divisions such as HR, EMS, operations, fire investigation, finance and so on and so forth. If anyone works for San Francisco Fire Department and is willing to let me dm them and ask some questions about your department and your job duties please comment or dm me:)

SFO parking employee discount

I recently parked there on May 2-6 at International Garage A and can confirm it is still $13 a day. However the parking attendant handed me a notice that they will be raising the price to $16 a day on June 1st. On another note I was able to get a discount without my DSW ID. I lost that card and I used my departments ID. They ask for your dsw # and what department you work for. I also brought my paystub just in case but they didnt need to see it.
