10 months since I applied, 2 years since I was first interested...why is the hiring timeline SO slow?

There was a position I had in mind that I was hoping to pursue whilst I was in college. When I graduated in 2024, I'd been told that the old Certification List was going to be used for 3 years instead of the original intention of 2. I applied 10 months after graduating when the position finally opened to create a new certification list. Took the test in Feb 2026. After a few weeks I received a very good result in the rankings. Took until a few weeks ago to be referred for open roles, and once I indicated my interest for the openings I've since gotten crickets.

Why does each of these steps take so long? The opportunity to try and get on the cert list is only open for a few weeks every few years. It took 4 months from the close of the application to have candidates take a test. Another few weeks to get results for a multiple choice exam. 5 months before the list was actually used for the first time. I applied 10 months ago, which would be about 1% of my expected lifespan. Plus at this point, it honestly feels like it could take an endlessly longer amount of time.

I have a different job for the time being, albeit an unstable one. I've invested quite a bit into wanting to work for the city. I love SF and want to help make it better.

Is there anything I could possibly do, or should I just keep waiting?

No Electric Metro Bikes in all of DTLA

I arrived today at Union Station, and I thought it might be fun to use my spare time between trains (arriving 3PM, leaving 1AM) to bike across all of Los Angeles to go meet my friend for dinner at Dockwiler Beach. I used to live here, and I thought it might be fun to pass through old neighborhoods through downtown, on the Expo Bike Path, down towards MDR, and along the coastal bike path. Given that crazy distance though, I was going to use an electric bike from Metro Bike Share.

I went to the dock at Union Station, where the only electric bike was dead.

I decided to use a standard bike to get over to Spring Street, where three electric bikes were dead.

I decided to use a standard bike again to get over to Main Street, where another three electric bikes were dead.

I decided to use a standard bike again to get over to the Lakers Arena, where two electric bikes were dead...BUT! One electric bike had a full charge. However, it refused to unlock on both the app and on the kiosk (all other bikes would). I called into customer support, and they said they saw no issue with the specific bike.

In total, I checked for bikes at Union Station, Spring & 3rd, Main & 9th, Broadway & 9th, Figureoa & 11th, and Hope & 11th. I think there was a few more but those are the ones I remember for sure.

It seemed impossible to find an electric bike in the entirety of Downtown Los Angeles, though after so many dead ones and 90 mins wasted I've given up looking. I went from Union Station over to the Lakers Area with no luck at any dock in between...what the heck?

It really baffles me that Los Angeles chose batteries that don't charge on docks. It even moreso baffles me that a central business district where every one of your bike share bicycles is dead is an acceptable state of affairs.

I've elected to take the Metro to Santa Monica, then bike on the coast. At that shorter distance, I won't really mind if the electric bikes are dead out there too. I'm irked to say the very least...

Why Doesn't SacRT put Service Distruptions on Google Maps?

Dealing with the Blue Line bus bridge. Every city I've ever lived in can put this info on Google Maps, some of which are far smaller than here. Why does SacRT just never provide this information through Google Maps? Especially baffling that this info isn't provided when this specific service disruption is pre-planned

Did Anyone Else's USC Account Get Deactivated Today?

I graduated last year and just had my account deactivated today. It's not the end of the world, but I didn't receive any email or communication it was going to happen so I wasn't well prepared. I have a backup but it's fairly out of date. Did this happen to anyone else?

UPDATE: Account Temporarily Reactivated
