Which is Worse: El Monte or Covina for Safety and Noise?

Im looking at new build townhomes in Covina and El Monte as these are the only affordable-ish areas in SGV.

I currently live in La Puente/West Covina border (moved last year thinking it’d be quiet because its very residential) and just experienced my first July 4th here…wow. What a war zone. Absolutely terrifying. I have two dogs. Its literally a problem not just on this holiday too. Funny enough, we drvoe around last night and the less residential areas seemed quieter as families werent gathered around there.

In general, which city is quieter and safer? All townhomes are near businesses and less residential areas.
El Monte areas that Im looking at are:

  1. Above the 10, near Tyler.
  2. Above the 60, near Durfee.

Covina areas:

  1. Above the 10, near S Asuza.
  2. Above the 10, near Grand.

Hoping that people more local will be able to give me insights. Im not too privy to this area. Thank you!

I made a new creative meet up, anyone want to come out and walk & work together Thursday 7/16?

Hi, I grew up in SGV and moved back here several years ago. With things getting more expensive, I wanted to create a free + low pressure space for people to meet their neighbors, get their creativity churning, and work together monthly. Let me know if you're interested in something like this!

Info below:

---

☀️ Walk & Work Together Thursdays ☀️

⏰ Thursday July 16th
5:00 - 6:30p (walk)
6:30 - 8pm (drop in any time)

Welcome!

There's no pressure to bring a project or to start or finish one.

We'll walk around the park between 5 - 6:30p. From 6:30 - 8pm, drop in anytime to work together.

We’ll be working on creative projects, and helping each other out with tips and tricks. Whether you’re stuck on a pattern or want some company while you create, we’re here to support each other.

I'll have free materials to show how to make a charm, catnip toy, or create a custom button.

📍Address:
Whittier Narrows (Area D Parking Lot)
750 Santa Anita Ave, South El Monte, CA 91733

🧵 Bring
- Your current creative project (or just yourself)
- Any tools or materials you need
- Water

Air Quality Issues for Saturday Night into Sunday

Hi r/LosAngeles, we are coming up on a period of potentially unhealthy to hazardous air quality due to fireworks.

What is the forecast?

High pressure is slowly building heading into the holiday weekend, which is thinning the marine layer, and leading to a warming trend (temps will be closer to normal for this time of year). The pattern will also keep the area under an inversion that traps pollution by the surface.

Are there any air quality advisories?

There is an air quality alert (officially a Particle Pollution Advisory) issued by the AQMD. It goes into effect at 5PM on Saturday, and will go through at least 3PM Sunday. AQMD is warning of potentially unhealthy to hazardous air quality for much of the region.

The Particle Pollution Advisory issued by AQMD (as of 5:15PM on 7/2)

What is in the smoke?

Fireworks give off large amounts of particulates of varying sizes. Some of the finer particulates (PM2.5) can get deep into your lungs. The particulates will be made of various compounds like paper, plastic, and metals.

The reason we have metals in the air: firework colors. Each color is created by burning metal salts. Some illegal fireworks may even contain lead.

How long is the smoke sticking around?

Smoke and other gases will come out of the atmosphere through deposition (think of ash falling on cars, or rain cleaning the atmosphere), transport/dilution (wind and mixing dissipating the smoke), or through chemical reactions in the atmosphere (which includes reactions with sunlight).

The rate at which this happens depends on the weather and pollutant. Large particles like ash, dust, etc will settle out of the atmosphere faster, and closer to the source. Fine particulates like PM2.5 can remain suspended in the atmosphere for longer periods of time, and can travel farther from the source. Some gases react and can break down quickly, while others may last longer.

How do I protect myself?

Treat this like wildfire smoke.

  • Run air purifiers if you have them. If you don’t there’s a guide from the EPA for a DIY air purifier. Link to Instructions
  • If you have central air: run the fan or A/C to recirculate air through your home and draw it through the filter. You’ll want a good enough filter (MERV 13 or higher if your system can handle it), that means you may need to run out to a home improvement store to buy a better filter.
  • If you have a window A/C or wall mounted A/C: Only run it if you can recirculate the air/close the outside air vent (some have a setting or lever for this). Do not let it pull outside air into the house.
  • Stay inside during the worst air quality, if possible.
  • If you have to go out, wear an N95 (or higher) mask.
  • Check air quality before heading out: AirNow Smoke Map, AQMD Current Air Quality

Hit and run. What can I do?

A couple months ago I've been involved in a hit and run. A guy in a pickup crashed into me causing 8k in damages and then he ran away. He was of course uninsured.

I got clear footage of the accident and his face as he got his head out the window after the crash.

I immediately reported it to the police and to my insurance.

Luckily I didn't get hurt and my car got fixed by my insurance as I had uninsured driver collision cover which covered my deductible.

I got his name and his workplace address, he is the social media face of a known local company. I went to CHP to report the accident in person but nothing has been done, the police have no interest in following this up even if there is clear footage of him crashing into me while being uninsured.

I'm over it mostly but I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing by allowing him to get away with it and potentially doing it again to someone else.

Is it time to let go? I'm new to the US, have I done all I could?

Thanks

Edit: it happened on the offramp off the highway

Web Series seeking help

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this on here, but my writing group and I just finished writing and developing the pilot script for our web series. We've never filmed anything before, so this will be our first time and we have no resources to get this production up and running. We need technical help (mostly camera work) and actors, so if you're interested in helping us out please fill out this Google Form and I will get back to you. And if you know anybody who could be a help please feel free to send them the Google Form. If you'd like to read the full pilot script and watch an animatic of the pilot, they're both linked on the Google Form

Burger Recommendations

Going to be in the SGV again this weekend, and I recently came across an article on the top 101 Burger Joints worldwide - https://www.timeout.com/los-angeles/news/l-a-landed-six-slots-on-the-best-burgers-in-the-world-list-061926 and saw two were located in the SGV - Amboy Quality Meats and HiHo Cheeseburger.

Since it's the 4th of July, figured I'll deviate from the Asian cuisine and try some burgers.

Curious on some other hidden gem burger joints people recommend.
