Cali Summer Trip

Trying to finalize a spot for a long weekend in California (Wednesday afternoon–Sunday morning) and would love some advice.

My partner has never been to California, and we live in Charleston, SC, so we’re drawn to coastal towns, boutique hotels, great restaurants, and a slower pace. I’ll already be in San Francisco for a work conference, then meeting him wherever we decide to go.
Right now we’re considering:

Los Angeles – Shutters on the Beach
San Diego – Pendry
Newport Beach
Santa Barbara

We’re big foodies and love beach days, slow mornings with good coffee, boutique shopping, and would love to take a surfing lesson. We usually prefer staying somewhere walkable where we can spend most of the trip on foot, with maybe one day renting a car to explore.
For a first California trip, where would you go? Are there any other coastal towns or hotels we should be looking at?

I love how there is no entitlement or angry people in California compared to Arizona

Its amazing how awesome people on the entire state of California are like compared to Arizona. Everyone is just so nice and kind. Not one ounce of entitlement or anger in anyone. San Diego, LA, The Bay Area, and all over the state has such nice, kind, and good intentioned people who don't start alterations or are confrontational. I just saw a video of a lady throwing coffee at someone, and I just think, it never happens in California.

Arizona on the other hand, holy moly are people so mean, rude, stuck up, entitled, and overall just so miserable. Always altercations and confrontations there. I am talking mostly about the Phoenix area though. Even Tucson isnt really friendly compared to California. I remember I didn't see one angry person in California until I landed back in Phoenix and saw someone angry at the airport and argue with a gas station clerk at a gas station in Phoenix.

Has this been your experiences in both California and Arizona?

Pet Supply Pantry

Repost to include flyer
Hello everyone!

I have recently founded a pet supply pantry in the SGV and we are receiving lots of requests! Firstly, if you or someone you know needs specifically cat supplies, please reach out! We have lots of cat supplies at the moment.

Secondly, and mods please remove this is not allowed, donations would be greatly appreciated. We have an amazon wishlist, however if you also own/know of local businesses that would be interested in doing supply drives I would be grateful for the information.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

California is bringing back EV rebates. This is how to get one

Nearly a year after the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax incentive for new electric vehicles, California is stepping in to try to motivate buyers to go electric.

Gov. Gavin Newsom allocated $135 million in his new state budget to provide incentives for new and used EVs. Participating automakers will match the funds. The EV incentives will take effect in the coming weeks as the California Air Resources Board irons out agreements with dealerships.

Here’s what you need to know.

Padres' SP Michael King Disagreed with Manager Craig Stammen's Costly Decision in Loss to Dodgers (Friday, 7.3.2026)

San Diego held a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning at Dodger Stadium following a masterful six shutout innings from starter Michael King. However, in the seventh, King started to show some signs of his command going out, and he was replaced by reliever Adrian Morejón.

Morejón seemed to immediately do his job, generating a gound ball to second base. However, infielder Jake Cronenworth booted what would have been a huge double play.

In the next at-bat, Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a go-ahead grand slam, rattling the Padres the rest of the way.

After the game, King and Stammen seemed to disagree on the decisions made that led to another loss for the Padres. King didn't want to discuss his performance since the team had lost the game, and it was clear that the starter wanted to stay in.

“Fine,” King said of his performance. “Didn’t win the game.”

King had only thrown 75 pitches, but Stammen wanted to give the game to his bullpen.

“I wanted the next batter,” King said.

The result for the Padres marked their seventh straight loss, sending the team below .500 with a record of 43-44. It has been a tough stretch of games for San Diego, and the team now finds itself four games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League.

The Billionaires Tax

SEIU-UHW has sent this out to all it's members (I am a proud member) today. The Billionaires Tax will be on your ballot this fall as Prop 40. Please go out and vote yes. This is admittedly is a short term fix to long term problem. However this is to make sure at least many rural hospitals and clinics stay open as well as making sure hospitals in the bigger cities can keep safe levels of care.

I'm making a historical/mythological map of California in a fantasy Middle Earth style and would love to get some more real world locations included

I'm hoping you can help fill up this fantasy Lord of the Rings style of the area. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.

While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks! Also, If you'd be interested in a print when it's finished, just let me know too.

Edit: Wow, thanks for all the feedback so far guys - you're awesome! I have to head out, but will be back on later to go through everyone's comments and get your suggestions on the map. Keep em comin!

New to Reddit dating

I’m recently out of a year long relationship with a relatively well known vegas strip performer whose name I don’t want to mention to respect her privacy. And I’m relatively new to online dating. I’m n the past all but 1 relationship I have had have been by way of meeting in real life through work, going out with friends or single relatives of friends. Vegas is a very challenging city to meet someone for long term relationships because it’s a transient city. I’ve been here since 2007 and I literally have 2 people I know that came here around when I came and are still here. And in my experiences it’s somewhat disappointing that a lot of the women I meet are more concerned about what I make a year than my actual attributes and interests. I mean I’ve done very well for myself here. I’ve got my own home and a rental property and my own cars, a career I’ve worked very hard at and have done very well with and I can I have “the fruits of my labor” to show for it. I am not materialistic but I do like to reward myself with nice things because I have worked incredibly hard to achieve them. At the same time I put away a substantial amount of what I have earned as well so I can happily retire one day and not have to worry about how I’m going to pay the next bill. So I’m not a ghetto rich as some people have been labeled. Ultimately I would like to find a girl or women that I can try new food places and travel with as well as spend my time with and be happy with. I would like to share my life with her and have it turn into something long term. Well let’s see how this goes. Wish me luck 🍀. 🤞🙂😊

California's historic housing bill is here. See which neighborhoods are getting upzoned

Townhomes, row houses and bungalow courts are likely coming to 57 neighborhoods across L.A. as part of the city’s plan to delay Senate Bill 79.

The historic housing bill, which took effect Wednesday, was written in hopes of addressing California’s housing crisis. It’s designed to boost apartment construction by overriding local zoning laws and allowing taller, denser developments near bus stops and train stations: up to nine stories for buildings adjacent to certain transit stops, seven stories for buildings within a quarter-mile and six stories for buildings within a half-mile.

It serves as a definitive statement from Sacramento lawmakers to cities that have failed to keep up with housing demand in recent years, including L.A., where single-family housing is still king. However, the bill was so contentious that in order to squeak it through, legislators stuffed it full of carve-outs and exemptions, allowing cities to delay implementation by passing their own plans to add density.

Where to camp last minute near Los Angeles for Fourth of July weekend

As many outdoor lovers know, there’s a special kind of magic when the stars align, you snag a last-minute reservation and realize you’ll soon be sleeping under the stars in a place you’ve never been.

But given the popularity of California’s campgrounds, is it really possible to book a campsite on short notice?

In this edition of The Wild, our outdoors staff writer Jaclyn Cosgrove explains not only how you can book campsites last minute but also where you will be more likely to find open spots (even, if lucky, on a holiday weekend like Fourth of July weekend).

Here’s what to know.

Job Giveaway to Illegal Aliens proposed by José Luis Solache. Can we please recall this guy?

What would possess a California Assemblyman to try this?

Jose wants to reward breaking the law

Illegal Aliens (also known as Undocumented Migrants) are NOT supposed to have jobs working for the government. His bill would allow illegals to work at California colleges. WTF? There is no excuse for this behavior and Jose Solache deserves to lose his job immediately.

I'm not MAGA or Republican; I'm a California democrat. Jose Solache is an embarrassment who can't read the room.
