should i invest my time in this game ?
I played rimworld and loved it (a lot more with mod) 800hours.

I also played dawn of man, manor lord, total war, bannerlord, bellwright, stronghold, kenshi, aska, anno etc ..

Is this game worth ? the graphic look horrible but since i played kenshi, i think i can hold this one too lmao

Anyone else dislike the way crime works with the new update?

Crime shouldn't be a total non-issue when happiness is above 100%. Like literally, in my city of 2,000, there is effectively zero crime just because I give some bare minimums. I can basically remove all my guards and only active them once happiness dips below 100% (which hasnt happened in a while). It just feels weird, like they removed a very fun and dynamic part of the game for any player who wants to create a city that isn't a hellhole.

Crime should be linked to happiness primarily in terms of crime causing dips in happiness when it goes out of control. But every city above a certain threshold should require a very basic system to combat crime. Basic, cheap prisons/gallows/guard posts that should be available from the start, and can be upgraded. Crime waves can happen as events. Criminality should be affected by unemployment, lack of housing, lack of education, low happiness, and especially lack of guards. But even if you have all of these things taken care of, some level of crime should still happen. Crime shouldn't just magically disappear. If you have a utopian society with no guards or punishment, crime can still spiral out of control and ruin that society. You should always have a default, baseline level of guards to take care of crime.

All the things WRONG with my Garthimi City (1.4k pop)

New player of around 50 hours here. I love this game so so much, thanks Sseth.

So I decided to build a majority Garthimian city for the first time and went in blind. I knew this city was gonna be bad, but looking at it in retrospect, it's really really bad. I already found a million different things wrong with my city but I am just curious what kinda feedback you'll come up with.

At 1k population everything started slowly crumbling. At 1.4k I really fucked up by taking on wayyyy too many Cretonian slaves to manage the agrarian sector.

I started running out of meat at about 1k and never could get production back up to a stable output even with a lot of tech and nobles. For some reason I found it really hard to efficiently implement Balticrawlers, having to rebuild that industry multiple times, until realizing that huge areas under the mountain did the trick way better. Still kind of underwhelmed and confused about how to play Garthimi properly.

Another problem is that I tried to multirace more, to be more efficient about my workforce. A few Amevians in the early game did a good job keeping fish production high and they were easy to segment off from the rest of society.
Little did I know I'd end up with ~150 Amevians at 1.4k total population.
This is my first game on the new patch so I didn't expect minor populations to breed that much out of my control. Needless to say brawls remained a constant problem until I ripped apart my city center to properly separate the incompatibles.

This city ended up outpacing itself. It is not a complete failure, but endless restructurings and mounting inefficiencies led to it stagnating to a point, where it just didn't make sense to continue.

So my question to you SoS-pros: what are the most obvious blunders here?

Humans only run fwiw...

Sounds like the new justice system means if you have happiness fulfilled crime is lowered. I'm pretty solid at 2.3k population. Switched my bakeries to operate on coal and my rationmaker to mix in herbs and suddenly I have tons of bread. I've had to close a few Bakeries and still have an insane surplus of bread.

I rotate my Nobles to fill gaps in production but I really am maxing out storage on many resources and might be ready to appoint Governors and conquer my first neighbor (I'm aware many players do this at earlier population.) I'm surrounded by some lakes and mountains and the neighbor does not appear to be connected to a large network of territories.

I digress. The occasional murder happened before this transition to high food production (no one would starve but I'd basically run out of of grain just before the new harvest, and the shrinking Food Days would cause emigration, but the new harvest would raise migration and I'd maintain my population), and now I'm now shifting into producing administration points because I want to have some Law fulfillment.

But I find myself wondering if Law fulfillment is necessary if everyone is extremely happy. I'm installing new food courts, upgraded wells, putting housing in places to accommodate new production. Everyone is very happy.

In v70 I always made it point to have Guardposts, a dungeon and executioners ready after 1.5k (completed the healthcare tree and had a ln incredibly strong military before this), but I don't see much theft or murder happening right now and I don't know if I'm wasting manpower and resources on this if everyone is happy now. I don't take slaves because I don't like the additional micromanagement, but the execution of raiders was always a huge, though temporary, boost to happiness.

A second question is, if, for example, I've got two food stalls in two parts of town. And each food stall has bakeries connected to it, and each bakery has a storage designated to accept grain and output bread (that the food stalls pull from), am I creating an infiniti loop of grain transportation and wasting manpower if the two Warehouses that collect grain from multiple warehouses are overlapping each other in radius?

To put it simply, if Grain Warehouse 1 has 999 grain, and Grain Warehouse 2 had 1001 grain, is manpower going to be wasted as they both try to satisfy having 1000 grain, and should I be restricting Grain Warehouse 1 and 2 to a short radius that pulls from their respective grain farms only, instead of both having a humongous radius that covers the entire city?

Any point for none-preference food farming?

So population on my city is steady growing but I started to think. I have only humans in my city and thus, I grow grain for bread, some livestock for meat/leather/fiber and a few fishers for ration production.

Is there any point in getting none human food preference at all? Like vegetables (how can humans not like vegetables? It's our most common food stuff after grains)

Is any worker not working on grain/bread, mushroom, egg (how do you even get eggs in large quantities anyway?) and meat just a waste?

Why does bad workload reduce production?

I notice this the most with farming. Why more people farming or fishing reduces the number of vegetables or fish?

I can understand that its less efficient because those workers can be busy elsewhere but straight up a reduction in amount produced?

So we get both wasted workers AND less food.

Is there a good wiki for this game? Hoping to get some questions answered

I love this game, but lately have been very frustrated playing. So many little details are so poorly explained in the in-game help section. I have so many questions about this patch and can’t find it anywhere online, the game just changes so much in like random ways

Any answers to the following questions would be greatly appreciated:

-there is no slaver anymore, why don’t my slaves that I buy ever appear? I pay like 300k for slaves and they just never show up. Is there something I am missing with buying slaves?
-when will parents use daycare? My daycare has super high load but there are many services available, I don’t even know how to make sense of that
-what is the difference between “tree” and “tree (natural)” in the decorations section? I thought trees were natural…
-i feel like homelessness has just been wild this patch, my housing numbers will fluctuate wildly without me building houses, and people will be homeless when there are vacant homes right next to their work
- is there a way to get some information on which races brawl? Besides just one little indicator that someone died from a brawl, doesn’t seem to give any troubleshooting tools to figure out how to reduce brawling. I know different races don’t want others by their house, but it doesn’t really even let you see where the brawl happpened a lot of the time and I have separated my races

How do I disable the Magnifier on mouse hover when zoomed out?

This affects my eyes too much making it unplayable (Literally). I also just bought the game today, so is there a mod, a setting, or a keybind that lets me turn it off?

My Argonosh literally CARRIED holy crap.

[totally did not have mods that gives me cheap tech to boost my units defense and others to have more stuff]

About 2800 vs 12000+.

Marched on a empire that I KNEW was far superior to mine but didnt see their HUGE ARMIES that FAR OUTWEIGHED my own even though my forces had far better quality individually and I didnt really send all I've got. When I saw the numbers I was like holy shit I dont think I'm making it out alive but decided to go with it anyway.

Left a false gap in the middle that they never pushed and kept my Argonosh behind the front-center near the gap.

The Argonosh came out the middle and sent them advancing into one of their flanks which QUICKLY COLLAPSED as they pushed and later managed to envelop their other flank with the rest of my forces that the Argonosh saved which later sent them running.

Quality really beats quantity if you play your cards right. [even without mods i hope..]

Hannibal+Reverse Helldivers typa shit my 200 Argonosh got to pull off with 100% training and max armor.

Also Argonosh seems easier to obtain if your Garmithis and with some luck I got to have more then 3 havens within my regions that I took control of that were quite nearby.

Vassals make no sense?

Am I doing something wrong or does creating vassals make no sense?

The bonus for giving them their own country disappeared very quickly and now I have an angry faction that I guess I have to conquer. In addition, they asked me to grant them independence, which I refused, and they are even more hostile.

Feeling dumb with medicine now.

Ive got three pairs of physicians and hospitals around city like the picture. Each pair has haulers and warehouses pretty full with tools, opiate and fabric. Physicians upgraded to I. They have worked well for a moment but most of the time they arent doing their job. No services or whatever. Cant understand why physicians-health doesnt increase properly and stablize. Normally its at 1.1 and should be at least at 1.5 i think. What I am doing wrong or missing here? Thank you!

Am I missing something with pastures? They seem useless. In general, how are you supposed to sustainably feed huge populations?

A pasture of 32x32 generates like 2.378 food per day.

A grain farm of 32x32 generates like 400 grain per year which evens out to 400/60=6.6 per day.

Meanwhile 4 hunters also poop out 7 meat per day or so.

Hunters don't scale, pastures and useless and grain albeit not bad, takes up enormous ammounts of space.

I get that the game is meant to be realistic, but am I supposed to actually dedicate 75% of the ingame map to farming just to sustain my population? The innovation upgrades don't do much either, its like 15% bonus per level which is fine, but not gamechanging. I also get that you're supposed to wean yourself away from hunters, but then how do you get meat with pastures having such pathetic output?

First attempt with Dondorians and first run of v71 coming from the demo. I can see why the game suggests hard for them. Cold climate, being so far up north limits neighbors, meat fish mushrooms are not very easy to mass produce, and have to happiness max as there's no children being born. Good fun though, but it's time for a break so I can try out other things.

Started with manually hunting and hunters workshop. Needed more food so built a massive fishing industry and city. Also built some pastures in the middle of the map which were later torn out to build city central. Dabbled in mushroom farming but those returns were pretty bad. Mountain building sucks. Not a fan. Didn't include a screenshot of my south city which is where I expanded the most early on, as a lot got gutted as I expanded into the other city sections.

When I attacked my small neighbor, my other neighbor got pissed off. Well I'll just fight them too and is that a cantor? That was a rude awakening and my entire army + mercs got demolished again and again until I could finally win. Eventually got a few cantors on my own which is good because I accidentally pissed off another neighbor expanding to the east and they sent a 4k army towards me with about 75 cantors. Once again, lost all my army but finally beat them back a bit and more so I could expand my cantor havens. Eventually pushed in the other direction which was blocked by a 9k army and an epic battle since I was outnumbered 9:1, but cantors saved the day.

My 2 cents after 50 hours

First of all, props to the devs, loving the game. It scratches that itch that I haven't really had scratched ever since Knights and Merchants. Manor Lords got close, but SoS does it better, at least for now.

TL:DR: I am enjoying my time fumbling about and learning, but when I began my journey, I was expecting my chosen race and region to shape my gameplay experience far more than it seems to. I have so far failed to find a way to meaningfully engage with the world map, and so every settlement of mine grows as an entirely self-reliant town where meanigful trade is a far off dream and job satisfaction does not matter. With what seems like a lot of depth going into the trade system of the game, I had expected to be able to leverage for at least moderate gains from the outset, but have so far utterly and completely failed at doing so. According to how I understand the UI, each of my neighbours seems to produce everything and at a surplus and I find it impossible to understand what I can trade to who and in what quantity. This hurts my soul. Experience in detail follows below.

I have so far managed a number of failures too high to count, and as of now I am contemplating yet another fresh start from a city of over 2000. I did finally manage to make that one self-sustaining and successfully conquered 2 of my neighbours for the first time, simply to get a taste for what war and conquest is gonna be like. Which is was sort of my goal there, and as I improve, there's a lot of things that I find I have done wrong about the city and I'd rather restart than tear it all out. On that note, is it advisable to resettle, or do I just re-roll?

I have so far played cities almost exclusively built around Dondorians, as I am a huge fan of the whole city under a mountain, liked the idea of the industry and military bonuses and figured not having to deal with birth and death and having a lawful population is going to make things easier for me. I realize now that in some ways I am shooting myself in the foot massively, but in other ways, I think this has actually been a significant boon to my learning experience.

My greatest hurdle to overcome was unsurprisingly food. Hell, it took me circa 3 failed cities just to realize how important hunters actually are in the early game. For which I blame the tutorial, which specifically teaches map hunting, but does not mention hunter jobs at all. So for a while I thought that's what all hunting was. I tried managing forage and map hunting, but forage, I find, simply does not get done unless micro-managed and it's yields are really only good enough to kickstart your own farms, while manual hunting dries up extremely quickly the second your population reaches triple digits. Meanwhile 15 hunters with a couple tech boosts from the free tech can sustain a village of several hundreds, which I honestly found a little OP once I figured that out. Their output has been key to my food supply until I could put at least a hundred people into fields and pastures. And so began the Great War on Food that has so far posed the great insurmountable challenge for my fledgling empires.

Now, being Dondorian, and being a hard-headed roleplaying dumbass, I attempt my best at actually supplying the prefered foods. At the start, this is now easy, I employ 15-20 hunters at the start and can now grow to 300 people with a finger up my nose. It's after that where food supply becomes the real pod racing. My first naive notions were that I am good at manufacture, so I will build this Big Beatiful Fortress(tm) under the mountain that my people will never have to stick their noses out of and trade everything that neeeds direct sunlight in exchange for my manufacturing output. BOY was i wrong. To be fair I'd still call my understanding of the trading system minimal, but that isn't helped by the fact how difficult it is to actually deduce the information useful to me out of UI. I want to know primarily how much a day someone will buy of something before the price crashes and how much daily profit on average can I expect for selling x amount of goods. The former I have simply not been able to find out at all and the latter depends on my own manual and wildly inaccurate calculations. I understand tarrifs, and I understand tolls, but there's all this info about supply and demand, and the targets's domestic production, and how much they traded and I don't know what else. And it might as well be hieroglyphs. It tells me no useful information my chicken brain can understand. Whatever those runes mean, the result is that with my merchant prowess I simply could not even manage the simple task of buying wood from a neighbour and selling said wood back as furniture whilst turning at least a small profit. Is such a thing even possible? Not for me it seems. Later on, in my most successfull city yet, I had a variety of produced surplus goods to trade, but even if I had pooled the combined surplus of every single athuri forsaken thing I made and distributed it among my 3 colleagues and 1 trading partner, I still could not gather enough of a revenue stream to reliably sustain a daily trade of 200 fish. This was disheartening to say the least and gave ceiling beams and a length of rope a certain special appeal. Was this because I was trading the wrong goods? Or was I trading them to the wrong people? Were the relations not good enough? How do I even look for good markets? Is sustained trade for food simply not an option at that stage of the game? Is it ever? All these are questions I had and none of them had any answers I was able to find anywhere within the game itself.

Inevitably, my eyes turned inward. I dug under the mountain for years for plots to set up my mushroom farms, I bought livestock and started raising onx. I don't think I did too bad, as it stands now, my agriculture employes a 170 farmers, 2 nobles and 30 unfortunate souls on the pumps, feeding a city of 2000 and supplying a comfortable surplus of fibre for the industry. I was a little worried about huge hits I take to job satisfaction as I push my people into the raw resource industries they are supposed to hate doing, but that actually turned out to not have any tangible impact whatsoever. Anyhow, with the city being in the cold wasteland Dondorians favour and with me not giving a damn about local fertility and moisture on the assumption that I won't have to, I have run out of all the best soil simply by pastures alone, and feeding the city nothing but mushrooms feels plain wrong, even if they do like them. It also comes with it's own problems. I have no more high fertility areas left to grow grain, herbs or opium. I had not expected to ever need grain, as Dondorians seem to not want to touch bread with a 10 foot pole, but it turns out it is the most accessible way of securing rations, unless you want to inlude herbs, which I suck at growing too and combine them with meat a meaningful surplus of which is a faraway dream for my onx pastures, the 400 hundred meat a day they make is devoured by the city almost entirely. Trading for enough of any of these goods is prohibitively expensive and so my 2 conquest campaigns had been fed on purchased rations, paid for with money looted by from defeated raiders. Very clearly, this is not a sustainable long term policy. Do I care too much about soil fertility or is my assumption correct that worse quality soils are simply not worth growing on? Do I cause myself too much of a headache by caring about the preference of my pops to begin with? And why do I have this sense of dread when I think about the fact that all this takes into account I am currently feeding my people the absolute lowest amount possible?

But to repeat myself, I am so far genuinely enjoying my time with the game and I am looking forward to finding answers to the questions I write here, I just hope those answers exist.

Buying regions / “unite”

I know this was asked before here, but I want to know if this is done by anoybodg instead of warfare? my nearest neighbor costs 10m to buy, i figure maybe once i have a few thousand pop, my net worth is in the many millions, i will try to produce a fuckload and sell constantly and then buy the province, but idk if this is just preposterously more arduous than conquering.

Idk whether it’s realistic to even concentrate 10 million in my coffers at once or if trading that much would inevitably tank the price of everything and i’d grind to a halt, unable to surpass inflation, after gaining few million?

Thinking about buying Songs of Syx during the Steam Summer Sale, but I have a question first.

Does the game have a family tree/genealogy system now? Like surnames being passed down to children and future generations?

I really enjoy colony sims where you can follow bloodlines and watch families grow over time. Also, if this system exists, how do you access or view the family tree in-game?

Would appreciate any answers before I pull the trigger and buy it 😄
