I bypass-wired a smart ceiling fan and documented the terminology mess that almost killed me

I wired a Tuya WiFi ceiling fan in bypass mode so the wall switch acts as a Zigbee event input instead of cutting power to the canopy.

The typical: "smart device needs constant power, wall switch keeps killing it" problem.

I don't know if you guys have found yourself in the same situation, but truth to be told...

The wiring itself is not the hard part.
The hard part was figuring out what to even search for!!

Because the same trick have a dozen names across HA forums, Zigbee2MQTT, Sonoff docs.... I was getting confused, I did not even know what I was reading...

So here a list of terminology I have found.

Hardware wiring choice:

  • bypass wiring (HA community)
  • decoupled switch wiring (Z2M's name for the same thing)

Firmware feature on the relay:

  • detached relay mode (Sonoff)
  • decoupled mode (Z2M)
  • switch-only mode (Tasmota)

They can produce similar end behaviour but they are not the same thing.
...took me embarrassingly long to untangle.

So I wrote it all down.

Repo has diagrams, vendor PDFs, a parametrised HA automation, and a terminology table at the bottom of the README so the next person doesn't have to go through a similar situation:

https://github.com/agigante80/homeassistant-bypass-wiring-fan

The project is a Sonoff MINI-ZB2GS in a Spanish switch circuit, driving a Ovlaim DC ceiling fan, but the technique is brand-agnostic and the diagrams are editable Excalidraw.

PRs and feedback is more than welcome! :)

ZBMINIL2 and temporary switches [PLS HELP!]

Hi all,

I just bought and set up nine new ZBMINI-L2 switches. The user manual says they can be set from latch mode to temporary mode by quickly pressing the module button 3 times.

When I do, the module led acknowledges my button press actions BUT the ZBMINI-L2 remains in latch mode.

The Internet chatter says the latest firmware release 1.0.14 from 2023 removed temporary switch handling!!

What do I do?

[EDIT] I just read someplace that unpairing the module from Z2M and repairing it with the eWeLink might expose a switch type setting in the app. Has anyone done this? If so will the setting persist across unpairing from the app + repairing with Z2M?

Which sonoff is advised?

This is a double switch, but I would like to attach a sonoff to just one. With the Zigbee standard, which sonoff switch could be used here? Super appreciate any help!

Basic r2 turning on/off hot water heater issue

I’m using a r2 and Alexa to turn on a Hager timer breaker, that turns my hot water heater on for a set amount of minutes. The Hager timer recently died, so I replaced it. Now when turn the water heater on with either Alexa or the eWeLink app, the water heater turns on, but won’t turn off after the set amount of time on the timer breaker.

I’ll post a picture of the breakers I use, and if anyone has any idea or advice as to why it won’t turn off after the set amount of minutes, even though it worked before, please let me know.

HA does not detect Sonoff ZBDongle-P

I'm sure this is something simple I'm missing but:

I purchased a SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus. I have Home Assistant installed on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. HA does not detect the dongle at all. Not when the dongle is plugged directly into a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port or into a known working powered USB hub which is plugged into a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port.

Nothing makes HA see it. It is not listed under Integrations or System Hardware. If I run dmesg on a terminal it does not appear (though the hub does).

What am I missing? Any other info needed?

Dangerous experience

I installed these a few months ago. Today I noticed a nasty smell in my child’s rooms like urine. After exploring and seeing the device unavailable in Ha I discovered this.

Very concerning given batteries were also scorched. Will be removing them all from the house

Zigbee Direct Binding switch recommendation

Hi, I've spent sometime researching best way to approach zigbee direct binding for my always powered Hue lights (i.e. switches should keep working in "detached mode" even when HA / SMLIGHT coordinator / MQTT are down). I want to be able to control both single and also groups of lights (e.g. corridor or whole home) via a single switch.

I'm restricted to the EU market so cannot use Inovelli Blues (Project Europa doesn't seem to be ready yet) and similar.

Another requirement I have is no batteries (so ideally everything powered from mains).

These seem to be the most promising options:

Both the Sonoff and the Shelly implementations still seem to have some issues/quirks (e.g. https://community.shelly.cloud/topic/14177-zigbee-client-binding-in-200-beta1/) but Sonoff seems more mature and has a larger user base right now.

Currently I'm leaning towards the ZBMINIR2 + their new Fusion enclosure (https://sonoff.tech/en-eu/products/sonoff-wall-switch-enclosure-e1gs-e1gsl) since I like the round design. Going with the ZBMINIR2 also allows me to use any other switches in the future.

Do you have any experience with such a setup? Any recommendations?

There are also these options:

but I found very little information online and they're also quite expensive (why?).
