Vegas Spartan needs to move back to March. October is way too hot.

This year’s Las Vegas Spartan was my fifth Spartan Race overall and my third in Vegas. I’ve always loved this event, but moving it to early October was a huge mistake imo. The biggest issue? The heat.

Temperatures were pushing 98-100*+, which made the entire experience unnecessarily miserable and at times, genuinely unsafe.
- No shade for spectators.
After charging each spectator $25 just to attend, providing some shaded viewing areas seems like the bare minimum.
- Racers were passing out from the heat.
That’s a pretty clear sign that the conditions were too extreme.
- Obstacles were dangerously hot.
Volunteers at certain obstacles mentioned people getting burned, and I personally experienced just how scorching hot some of the metal bars or black wooden blocks were.
- Obstacles were modified or removed.
Certain obstacles had to be adjusted or dropped because of the conditions, which seems like another good indication that this wasn’t the right time of year to host the event.

And then they announced that next year’s race would be held around the same time. Insane. Anyone familiar with the Vegas area knows that early October can still feel like the middle of summer. We don’t typically start seeing consistently cooler weather until November. Moving the race back even a month would make a massive difference. Tbh, genuinely curious why they moved it from early March in the first place. March always seemed like a much more reasonable time to host an outdoor endurance event in the desert.

My younger brothers and I have made the Vegas Spartan a tradition over the years, and it’s something we always look forward to doing together. But if they keep it in early October, next year might be the first time in years that we skip it. And that honestly sucks.

I want to be clear that the race itself, the volunteers, and the people involved were great. This isn’t a complaint about the event or the difficulty of Spartan. It’s about scheduling a physically demanding race in extreme desert heat when there are much safer and more enjoyable times of year to do it.

I really hope the organizers reconsider before next year’s event.

Great race. Great people. Horrible time of year.

Curious if anyone else who raced Vegas this year felt the same way.

Changing Finisher shirt size?

I lost quite a bit of weight between signing up for the race and race day. I’m participating in the Lake Nona sprint tomorrow and didn’t even think about changing the size until a friend mentioned it.

Does anyone know if they’ll let you swap sizes at pickup?

Thanks!

Sunday Lake Nona-Orlando

I am going to my first spartan this Sunday. I know the event is rain or shine but with these storms rolling in might bring thunder and lightning as well. If that happens do they extend the day and wait it out or reschedule or get credit for the next event?

Spartan Sprint Advice

I’m doing a Spartan sprint (doubles open) on Halloween. I’ve never done a Spartan race before and I’m so nervous. I feel like I’m totally overthinking this, but I don’t want to be underprepared. I have a billion questions.

What do you wish you knew your first time? What do I need to bring? What’s unessecary? Should I get trail sneakers? Can I wear my Garmin? What should I wear? Do people dress up on Halloween? I read that chalk is banned now?

I’ll take any advice y’all have.

Fenway Stadion Sandbag carries

I am a first timer for any race of such kind. I wanted to get an estimate of the number of stairs I'd need to go up/down in Fenway stadion race in sandbag carry. If someone can put a number on it.

Which heat for first time 10k?

Hey all. I’m wanting to participate in an April 2027 10k super and deciding whether to enter the competitive or non competitive heat.

For context, I completed a 5k sprint back in April 2024 and was able to complete most obstacles except for the monkey bars and rings. I can comfortably do 10-12 pull-ups but my overall grip strength isn’t great. I’m hoping to challenge myself by doing a longer race this year since I’ve been training a little harder in the gym.

I’m a 22yo male 155lbs who lifts several times a week. I’ll be training to get my endurance and grip strength up in the coming months. Is it worth it to go for the competitive (age group) heat or should I just go with the open?

Spartan Sprint 5K

I am doing my first Sprint 5K in the next few weeks - specifically the VA one. I have heard that headphones/earbuds are not allowed. Is this true? I was going to put my phone in my running belt as well. Is this a good idea or should I do a running vest instead? Thanks!!!

Spartan race transfer issue

Spartan race does it again ! When will I learn to keep my money away from their sticky fingers.

Situation:

I signed up my fiancé for the Lake Nona Sprint this coming Sunday. She cannot attend due to an injury so we tried transferring the ticket to my step son, well they charged my credit card the $37 fee for the transfer but low and behold my step son did not get a code or any emails. We contacted their customer service department and the stupid AI keep regurgitating generic answers and we can’t get a answer from a live person. The cut off for transfer is today so we are probably screwed. Every time we try to do any thing spartan related is a huge hassle. Moral of the story, if you don’t mind giving money away and get poor customer service sign up for races if you care about those things be very mindful when signing up for anything spartan related, if anything happens it will cost you and possibly loose your hole investment.

My First Spartan DEKA FIT Referee Experience 🏃‍♀️

📍 Shenzhen
📅 October 7
📌 Zone 3

My first time joining a DEKA FIT event as a referee, and what an experience!

I spent the whole day in Zone 3. Standing for hours was definitely exhausting, but watching athletes push through the stations and give everything they had was incredibly motivating. Seeing everyone keep going, even when they were completely exhausted, gave me so much energy.

I’m really happy to have been part of the event and to experience DEKA from a completely different perspective this time. 💪

See you at the next one!

Reflections on my 2026 Las Vegas Sprint

This past Sunday was my 4th Spartan Sprint! This year I did the 10am Open heat. I aimed high to set a new PR, but went backwards from this goal by about 15mins this time...I was ambitiously aiming to get under 1hr. I felt like during sections of the race, I could have been on pace to do just that. My long breaks were what changed that result. I don't have Strava/Alltrails data to really confirm this though, as I don't believe in bringing my phone on course for fear of damaging it!

I noticed throughout a good portion of the course, my breathing and heartrate was really up there. I kept telling myself to even out my pace more. I felt like instead of steady running/jogging between obstacles, I alternated between moderate walking and shorter sprints. So there was a lot of variation in my pace. I tried following a handful of racers and taking note what their pace was. But more than once we would yo-yo each other, unsurprisingly. I think I could have helped myself by simply maintaining a more average pace. Pushing hard and early on certainly helps make up for some weaker sections, but ultimately I paid for it more heavily towards the end.

Running fatigue had already started kicking in around the Monkey bars, which was just the 4th obstacle. I took multi-minute breaks at each water station, and sprinted hard after each one to try and make up for it. But fast forward to the Atlas ball carry (obstacle 11?), I could see my strength was starting to dwindle. It took me 3-4 attempts to pick it up, when I'm used to just 1, maybe 2.

By the time I made it to the sandbag carry and Hercules hoist, I could no longer easily manage continual holds. The begging of the sandbag carry felt good, as I was going a slow walking pace and didn't drop the bag until making up the hill past the photographer (halfway point?). So up until that point, I had passed by many people trying to move faster and dropping the bag multiple times for breaks. I guess seeing so much of that ultimately made me also cave-in and drop the bag more than once to rest (it became demotivating). This was the big turning point in my race. The struggle became much more clear.

The sandbag carry was obstacle 15(?), but the next wall of exhaustion hit at the Hercules hoist (obstacle 18). This is where I felt like I lost the most amount of time. I attempted it 1-2 times, then literally stepped away and sat on the ground for what felt like 10mins or more. My forearms were dead and sapped of a lot my strength. I noticed there was a penalty loop, but mentally I figured that would still take longer than resting and finishing an attempt.

After seeing a particular racer in a Charizard costume finish the hoist and then make it to the finish line in the distance, it put the fire under my ass to push again. I was closer to the finish than I initially realized. Even though I suddenly felt like "It's so close, I can still make it", I also felt a bit let down by myself that I gassed out and crumbled with so little distance to go.

As you can see by all my results, I tend to finish within a somewhat consistent timeframe, despite encountering very different challenges/hold ups between all of them. So at least I've found consistency. As I mentioned, I would like to find a different way of pacing myself to hopefully more evenly balance out my attempts.

Some side thoughts:

What happened to the fire jump at the end?? I didn't even see evidence of it even existing. When did the barb wire crawl become a simple set of ropes you can squat under? Where did the practice obstacles go? I really wanted to practice my spear throw. Overall it felt like the event footprint shrank somehow. I don't understand why the obstacles feel a bit dialed back now?

I started taking creatine 2 months before the race, and could feel a difference in how many reps I could do training. I also wore one of those Intake nasal breathing strips during the race. I think despite those positives, my late Friday night out with friends and my exhausting busy day at work on Saturday took some energy out of me for race day. Saturday I even ran in to a low blood sugar episode from having to delay my lunch a bit longer. That was a bit concerning and something I'll look in to more, as I usually don't deal with that on a daily/weekly basis. Only a handful of times before.
