Which version of Izzet Prowess is the best for the current Standard? [Standard]

I really only play Arena and my Dimir Mid is not up to snuff anymore. I don't have that many WCs so trying to understand the card choices.

I typically use MTGGoldfish, this looks to be the standard list?

Name Izzet Bounce

Deck

7 Island

4 Opt

4 Stormchaser's Talent

4 Burst Lightning

4 Boomerang Basics

2 Colorstorm Stallion

3 Secret Identity

3 Flow State

1 Wild Ride

2 Multiversal Passage

1 Into the Flood Maw

3 Drake Hatcher

4 Riverpyre Verge

4 Steam Vents

4 Spirebluff Canal

4 Sleight of Hand

2 Vibrant Outburst

4 Slickshot Show-Off

Sideboard

1 Colorstorm Stallion

1 Slagstorm

2 Get Out

2 Roaring Furnace // Steaming Sauna

1 Into the Flood Maw

2 Spell Pierce

1 Drake Hatcher

1 Ral, Crackling Wit

2 Soul-Guide Lantern

2 Sunspine Lynx

---

Questions

a) Why not Astrologian's Planisphere? Too slow?

b) I find Stallion underwhelming when I play against it - am I missing something? (always killed by Slickshots)

c) Why Lynx in board? Against BG?

Any good guides would also be helpful. I was toying with Excruiator but I think Prowess is just too strong.

Also, given the bursty nature of this deck, can it do well in Bo1? Then I can save on SB 😄

[Standard] Enduring curiosity frame mogged by a TMNT common?

https://mtgdecks.net/Standard/dimir-midrange-decklist-by-yoshida-yutarou-2971710

It's sort of become my guilty pleasure lately to constantly be checking if there are any viable Dimir midrange/tempo that are existing, and whether they're actually seeing results whatsoever. The purist in me loves playing tempo too much, and it's a bit too pricey for me to go out and buy all the cards for the UW High noon prison deck, so for now I'm stuck with my boomer Kaito Dimir, which is slowly being left in the dust by less "fair" decks.

The most recent one to get my attention is the strangest Ninjutsu/Sneak deck that consists of basically only evasive 1-drops, kaito, and 4 copies of [[Oroku Saki, Shredder Rising]]. I played it on arena for a bit, and it feels way faster to turn the snowballing on as early as turn 2 with a 3 power clock that draws you cards.

I will say it plays less adaptably because you don't have cards like Tidebinder and Bitter Triumph. When I played against the "uncounterable" combo decks (Sultai Reanimate, Temur Kona, Excruciator, etc.), or against strong planeswalkers, they basically dumpster you if you can't kill them by the time they assemble their combo, but this could probably be fixed with the sideboard / small adjustments.

Also, no idea why this deck has 2x [[Subterranean Schooner]], but this post is mostly about Oroku Saki. Secretly busted bonkers common?

[Other] Format where eggs are good

Is there a (paper) format, where either Second Sunrise- and/or Scrap Traveler-style eggs deck eggsists and is viable? I played some modern Faith's Reward eggs, and it was very fun, but Karanos knows the deck is not very good. I tried the eggs trone in pauper, but it is not an eggs deck. I had a well-tunned and somewhat performant Scrap Trawler-Arcbound Ravager Modern brew, but it was pre-bowmasters, and this days the deck is frankly terrible.

So, my question is this: can someone please share a list, that plays a real million-small-decissions-in-a-turn eggs strategy, and can at least win an FNM in its respective format?

To Spike, Tournament Grinder

Hopping for a swift answer

With Great Respect

Jhonny

P. S. I know that a good specialist could probably win a Modern FNM with modern-day second breakfast. I'm just not that good. Or my list is bad...

[Standard] Temur Elementals still viable?

„Temur“ Elementals still decent?

Hi all, what are your opinions on the elementals deck. I am thinking of buying into it, as I love the playstyle, but I haven’t seen it been played by anyone in paper and also never seen it on arena again for the last few months since Lorwynn.

However, I am unsure if I should buy the thrones, since they at least 100$ and are not legal for such a long time anymore- would the deck make sense without them too?

[Article] Pro Tour articles on the Wiki.

Kai ora e whānau! I’ve spent the last year working away at creating pages on mtg.wiki for all the Pro Tour events that didn’t already have pages. And some National Championships too. I started with the inaugural “Pro Tour Speed Dial” (https://mtg.wiki/page/1996\_Pro\_Tour\_New\_York) on June 12th last year and just yesterday finally managed to replace the redirect for 2011 Pro Tour Philadelphia (https://mtg.wiki/page/2011\_Pro\_Tour\_Philadelphia) with the basic information yesterday.

Which leads me to this post. If you click on both those links you’ll see that the pages for the 1996 season are a lot more fleshed out than the 2011 season pages. For the earlier pages I’ve tried to give a meta breakdown, summarised how the games of the final match played out, added a tab with all the decklists played at the event that I could track down… whereas the later stuff is just the basics: qualifying criteria, what sets were legal, and standings at the end of day 1, 2 and at the end of the Top 8. This was purposeful: I was originally spending a couple of weeks on a single event — granted, tracking down sources and piecing information was much harder for the 90s tournaments — but I managed to smash out the 2007 season in a single day. My focus was getting the pages up first, so they can be expanded later.

So: Adopt a Pro Tour. While I plan to go back and expand a lot of things myself I’d love to drum up a bit of extra assistance from the community. That’s what a wiki is, after all! It’s certainly a lot of work, and it’s been rewarding, but I also want to get stuck into other projects on the wiki too: Player profile pages, classic deck histories, stuff about cube… and so on. So what I’d propose you consider would be to pick ONE pro tour event. Maybe it was the first you watched on streaming, or was won by a player or deck you really enjoyed. Simply read a few old articles, watch through any of the old coverage which still exists, and just jump in and add anything interesting you found to the page. Creating an account is easy, making your first edit isn’t scary, and you’re more than welcome to message me here or on the discord for advice. :)

Things that could potentially be added are:
*format meta - before, during, and how pt results affected it afterwards
*break out new decks or players
*deck lists of the Top 8
*breakdown of an innovative draft strategy
*incidents — was someone DQed? What happened?
*stories — maybe someone went 8-0 day 1, had a terrible second draft and completely sank their whole tournament? The pro-tour debutant beat a previous world champion in a round 16 win-and-in?
*notable matches
*and so on

Although the pages from 1999 to 2011 probably need the most work, as they were the target of my “just get it done” approach, don’t feel that you are limited to those. If you think my meta breakdown of 1996 Columbus is lacking then by all means fix that up. A lot of the pages from PT Dark Ascension onwards probably haven’t had many major changes for years and so if your interest is in more contemporary competitive play then don’t hesitate to get stuck in to some of those too.

Deck suggestions for returning player [standard]

Played standard back in HS / UNI - 15 + years ago. Dabbled here and there on arena. Played commander causally for 3 years now, but built a deck that is too juiced and has risen a lot in value: $600ish on the low end.

I want to get a paper standard deck and come down to my LGS again, but I don’t want to waste a ton of cash or credit on something that isn’t fun, competitive or will be mostly phased out sooner than later. I don’t have enough wild cards in arena to test, so just hoping for some suggestions from a smart group of competitive enthusiasts with more insight than some random YouTube video.

I appreciate any time given for responses immensely ! You’ll probably save me a few hundo and let me get right back into having fun.

Thanks in advance!

[Standard] Azorius momo post rotation

Hey, decided to build azorius momo as my next deck. Been playing with azorius enchantments . Loved the agro/tempo playstyle of it, with draw engines and many different play paths (going tall/wide/holding counters etc) but it's gonna rotate out soon and i'll be left with good azorius manabase, so then i found the momo/tempo decklist which seems to play a bit similar to what enchantments feel.

With the upcomming rotation, it seems like the deck doesnt lose too many pieces - pixies, high noon, verges, parting gust.

How well wpuld the deck function without these cards realistically? Of course its hard to tell without knowing all sets etc, but as it is right now minus those cards, would it still be playable and competitive?

[Standard] What are people's opinion on Jeskai lessons? I'm fairly impressed by it.

Decklist here, this archetype is basically lesson + control package, it did pretty well in the recent RC. It's stronger than jeskai control and feels more consistent than 4c control. The deck synergises very well with tablet as you can cast most of your spells with the tablet alone. Even if you can't cast it, it still increases the lesson count.

Because of this, you can almost always cast the tablet on turn 3/4 without worrying about the tempo. You also generally feel pretty safe to cast stock up on turn 3 since you have plenty of cheap removals to stabilise before and after, jeskai revelation is probably coming on turn 5 if you can find it or the tablet with stock up.

So the deck feels a lot faster and consistent. The 4 copies of abandoned attachment removes a lot of dead cards on the 1st match. The mana base is very consistent, 23 lands instead of 26 or 27 prevent flooding.

The 4 copies of gran gran is annoying as hell since most decks can't afford to run many removals against control, if they do just board it out on the 2nd game. The graveyard synergy is also annoying since the deck still function well against graveyard hate, but without it accumulated wisdom becomes ancestral recall.

[Standard] looking to advice to how to setup my azorius tempo deck to my local meta

Hi everyone,

I’ve been running an Azorius Tempo list (https://moxfield.com/decks/jZSeAQkvSnqelBvRybVN9w) and have managed to pick up a few local tournament wins here and there. However, lately my local meta has adapted, and I’m finding myself struggling to keep up with the new decks finding success.

I’ve only been playing for about 8 months, so I don't quite have the deep metagame experience to easily brew my way out of this corner. For reference, here are the Top 8 results from our local store's last three tournaments:

week 1(i dont participate):

  1. azorius momo

  2. jeskai control

  3. jeskai control

  4. dimir Excrutiator

  5. Golgari Midrange

  6. Mono Green Landfall

  7. Dimir Aggro

  8. Izzet Lessons

week 2:

  1. Azorius tempo (me)

  2. Jeskai Control

  3. Jeskai Control

  4. Izzet Prowess

  5. Azorius Momo

  6. Golgari Midrange

  7. Izzet Maestro

  8. Azorius Momo

week 3 (previous wekend):

  1. Mono Green Landfall

  2. Mono Green Landfall

  3. Azorius tempo (me)

  4. Izzet Prowess

  5. Dimir Midrange

  6. Jeskai Lessons

  7. Boros Mobilize

  8. Temur Prowess

[Standard] Sultai Mid-range looking for advise

I have been playing this deck for a while but only as a break from competitive meta. Until recently I found a similar deck beat all other top decks and won the MIT. So I steal that deck and merge into my build. Here is my current list:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7756055#paper

The core of the deck are [[Deceit]], [[Wistfulness]] and [[Superior Spider-Man]]. The trio have proved their value in the Sultai Reanimate deck. Copying Deceit's ETBs with Spider-Man is a powerful move and can be a big swing in tempo. Adding Wistfulness not only helps fixing hands but also brings answer to resolved permanents that Dimir always struggling to.

A significant change I made is adding [[Glarb, Calamity's Augur]] for fixing hand and gaining resource, and he is doing a good job for me so far. Casting the elementals from deck top with Evoke is like cheating. because of him I have changed one of the drawing spell to [[Rakshasa's Bargain]], which can be cast from the top with Glarb too.

The biggest weakness of this deck is the pips. Both elementals, Glarb and the Gearhulk all have a highly colored cost. The lands must line up very well to cast these cards in order. So I would like to have some advise on the mana base and color ratio.

The sideboard is also just temporary. It is heavily tunning against Control and Landfall since these are the most unfavored match up. Is there any other match up I should keep an eye on or any good sideboard card I have missed?

Looking for Feedback (Golgari Control) [Standard]

https://moxfield.com/decks/dL6NeZOLnUy2tabZtdtsuQ

I’ve been playing tried and true decks (some may call these netdecks) for awhile but wanted to get back into brewing. This did pretty well last season but I know it can do better.

Curious to hear everyone’s constructive criticism. (or you know, roast me into oblivion, whatever floats your boat)

[Standard] Izzet Lessons Guides

I’ve been playing Izzet Lessons for a while now and I recently switched to the list that Rui Zhang played at the Pro Tour at the start of last month:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7761397#paper

I’ve been having a lot of fun with the list and the only changes I’ve made is cutting one Consult the Star Charts and one Spell Pierce from the main for two more Abandon Attachments.

I’m also thinking about adding a couple of Wan Shi Tong, Librarians to the sideboard because I heard that it was good again green landfall decks.

Does anyone have any good sideboard guides or resources for Izzet Lessons? Or thoughts for the actual construction of the deck?

I’ve tried the storm chasers talent version and I’ve found the more controlling version from this list to be more successful but that may just come down to play style.

I’m looking to try my luck at the Arena Open in a few weeks so any help would be appreciated and if anyone wants to play test or just get in some games on Arena let me know!

Looking for spiky content [other]

So I've been out of competitive magic for over a decade, but have recently dived all the way back in. I'm trying to find high concept content, particularly YouTube or podcasts that I can listen to while working, that discusses current metagame, specific matchups, theory, sideboarding, etc. the problem is that this kind of content is not highly prioritized by the algorithm. Anytime I try to search for something in this vein I end up with a ton of streamers arena gameplay content or Commander videos. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the professor, but I'm looking for something a little bit higher level

I know about LR because they've been around forever, and other than just looking up old pros by name, I'm not having much luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions? What do you like to listen to? Hype up your favorite sweaty creators.

Won my store championship [standard]

Won my store championship with this today!

https://moxfield.com/decks/7_XhTpys5k2TfbWn_4mlTA

First time posting, so go easy on me!

I've been tweaking this list for quite a while and have borrowed ideas from a number of successful builds along the way. At its core, it's a Bant Badgemole Cub/Ouroboroid list.

I recently added white to the deck, and since then it has felt incredibly strong. Some of the standout cards have been Figure of Fable as an excellent mana sink, Sab-Sunen for its combination of indestructibility and card draw, Quandrix Charm for its versatility, and Enter the Avatar State as both protection and a way to grant evasion and lifelink when needed.

I faced quite a bit of control during the event and was able to hold my own thanks to counterspells like Spider-Sense and Quandrix Charm. I also can't overstate how powerful Frenzied Baloth was out of the sideboard. The deck felt flexible enough to go long in grindy matches while still being capable of getting under opponents with a fast start.

Against more aggressive decks, I brought in Seam Rip for cheap removal. It seems like enchantment removal is underplayed by many opponents right now. In mirror matches, Into the Flood Maw was excellent for setting opponents back a turn or bouncing a threat that had grown too large. Erode also pulled its weight by answering troublesome planeswalkers and, in a pinch, helping me find a land.

I mainly wanted to share the list because I haven't seen many people playing something quite like it, and I'm pretty proud of how it performed. I'd love to hear any feedback, suggestions, or thoughts on the deck. It felt balanced, consistent, and, most importantly, a lot of fun to play.

[Modern] [Discussion] Determined to do better next RCQ; Infect/Poison Control/Temp

Hey folks!

Might remember me from this recent post, where I revealed a pet deck that would go on to put up a decent fight, but failed to close the games out in a positive way. In one of the comments I explain how I washed out, basically either keeping bad hands (forgot the key rule of this kind of deck was to start with removal and draw power) or completely running out of gas and having no way to either refill my hand or close the deal after effectively controlling the board for several turns.

I'm stuck at a bit of a crossroads, though. I have the cards set up for making a Sultai list, which you can see the beginnings of here (WRONG LINK WAS POSTED INITIALLY). I can't recall what the rules are for building w/ fetches, as when I was learning when they came out I didn't really have Fetchland money. That plus Verges and things are incredibly new to me, so definitely looking for pointers on how to build with them. Advice I was given was 8-10 fetches, 2/2/1 on shocks splitting with primary/primary/splash, and then the rest being deck dependent. No idea how viable that is, feels weird to me to have so few basics, though.

An idea that is either going to turn into a separate deck or something, though, is taking a UW Scepter build and making it Esper to bring in monsters like [[Phyrexian Crusader]] or [[Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon]] and going back to my roots as a WWK/Scars aspiring Control player. I'm just really married to the Infect/Phyrexian bit, to be really honest. Something of a style point, I suppose.

In short, I'm hoping I could start something of a brewing session to make a Sultai list that can hold up a lot better than my UB Infect list which has been adjusted to Hell n' back since that original thread, just haven't played it in Modern since. Or, failing that, I could get encouragement to go whole-hog into Esper Scepter that kills w/ Poison for a good laugh.

Edits: Tweaked the list; dropped Prologue to Phyresis because it's just not great. Every time I've cast it, it's either getting 1 poison across or doing a very bad job digging. Tossed in Tyrranax Rex as an additional pressure, and with a Sultai setup the 3 green pips shouldn't be terrible. Assuming I can hold the board down, he comes down and bombs the game in a way Skithiryx probably only dreams of.

[Standard] Dimir Excruciator When to sideboard the demon in and out?

Some Dimir excruciator decklists are running an extra doomsday excruciator in the side board? Which match ups would you add one extra demon? When do you sideboard your demons and for what match ups?

I often sideboard it out during aggro match ups to be as midrange as possible but what about control? Or a badgermole cub style deck?
