PSA: $100 Amtrak Gift Cards Are On Discount at Best Buy, ONLY Today (5/20/26)

Saw an email ad about the $100 gift card being discounted, and went to go check for myself. Best Buy’s website currently shows their $15 off. There’s a limit of 3 per buyer, and it ends at midnight today, but you can buy them online, and I’m sure there’s some way to game that limit if you wanted to.

Unformatted link to the product page to prove this is legitimate:

If you intend on taking Amtrak at all in the future (which is hopefully true of everyone here) this is more or less free money on the table. Even if you’re not planning to ride soon, I’d still try to go for this if you can, as gift cards don’t expire.

Work commute

I just graduated from college and I’m starting work soon. I’m working in an operations program in Frankfort, Kentucky. I’m now trying to find a place, but there aren’t much options in Frankfort and I want to be near young people, and in a more developed city. My two options are either Lexington or Louisville, but the commute to work everyday would be roughly 50 minutes.

I’m wondering if anyone’s experienced this and is it worth the 50 minute drive to have a better lifestyle?

ISO commuter reccomendation

My commute is 25 miles of gravel road + 25 miles on a 2 lane highway 70mph into town.

I offroad ride and hairscramble on a Honda 250R. I have been thinking I am outgrowing my 250 and started toying with the idea of getting a 450 for the (too few) rides I go on.

I think a 450 dual sport could be a slick fit for me to have a little bit more bike for offroading… but am questioning if the community thinks that something bigger would hold up better for the 100mile (commute both ways) daily ride.

Thanks!

NEC Amtrak prices are up this summer so I built a price drop monitor

I commute 3x weekly in the NEC and I'm spending around 20-30% more on my summer tickets, and I even started booking further out than normal (just started booking September tickets this month)

I've been building out a monitor for price drops on tickets I've already bought to try to recoup some of the cost. Basically, anytime a price drops, I get an email for it. I purchase the new ticket, then cancel and (full refund) on the old ticket. Usually save $5-10 per price drop. I've managed to catch around 4 price drops in the last few weeks of testing this with my commute!

I added this as a feature for other commuters on my site railcommute.io, but anyone is welcome to try it. It's currently free, and I'd love more testers so I can see how often these price drops really happen across different routes. Please give it a shot! Any future dated tickets you add on the site will start being monitored. FYI, points are not currently supported but I'm working on it. Let me know how it works for you!!

Considering Commuting for new job: Baltimore to New York City (2-3 times a week)

Hi Ya'll.

New here. I am currently deliberating on whether or not I take this new job opportunity in NYC. I live in Baltimore, and am familiar with the commute time (between 3-4 hours) from Baltimore to NYC. Brutal. Is there anyone out there that commutes this frequently? Is it worth it? I also understand that if I work in NY, I pay NY taxes, even though I reside in Baltimore. Also brutal.

Part of me is telling myself I can catch up on tasks and life while commuting to and from but I haven't commuted to this level before. I'm sure this post comments will include "you'll hate who you've become in a few months" but for anyone who is out there that has found a way to make this work, it would be helpful to hear from you!

Job is 80k, requires 3 times a week in office in NYC. I may be able to convince them to come in 2 days per week, perhaps find a room to sleep in one day a week so that I don't get swamped with travel back to back.

Thoughts?

Car recommendations for commute (125 miles 2x/week)

Hi, I’m going to be suoercommuting for a year before my family relocates to the new city. It’s a 125 miles each way (all highway) and I would back and forth each week. Anyone who drives a lot have a car recommendation? I’m considering an EV. Trying to be as economical as possible given I only need the car for a year. Thanks!

I live in South Jersey and am considering a job in Boston. Due to cost of living in MA, a full family relocation is not possible until my partner gets a job in BOS too. Thus, considering a super commute. I have two young kids (9yo and 3yo).

On site time and days are negotiable, but it is definitively NOT a remote position. What should I negotiate to support super commuting? What tax implications should I consider?

What other personal implications should I consider?
