1st tattoo

Fresh vs. three years healed.

The first three photos show the tattoo when it was fresh; the last two were taken three years later. This delicate floral piece was done by Cathy (@cathy.artwork).

We often get asked how very fine lines and soft colour accents age. Over time, the lines have settled and softened, while the pastel shades are still visible and the overall composition remains light and readable.

Thoughts on this three-year result?

Used to be insecure about my stomach, now I’m rocking low rises at any given opportunity. The whole thing took 5 hours, it was absolutely worth it! Very happy with the results :)

After getting my handpoked fungi sleeve 2 years ago I finally came back to my favourite artist and got my dream chest piece.

I recently got my right sleeve attached to my back piece and got the lighting bolts filled in with orange, but I’ll post those progress pics next time I go in.

I’ve been tattooing koi for a long time, and one of the things I love about traditional Japanese tattooing is how much meaning can be communicated through imagery without having to spell everything out literally.

Koi are a great example. The direction they’re swimming, their color, the season represented by the surrounding flowers, and even their relationship to the water can all contribute to the story of the tattoo. Upstream and downstream koi can suggest different points in a journey, while seasonal elements like cherry blossoms, peonies, maple leaves, or chrysanthemums can completely change the mood and context of the piece.

I put together this short video explaining some of the symbolism I consider when designing koi tattoos, along with a little background on where those ideas come from.

Obviously, Japanese tattoo symbolism isn’t a rigid dictionary where every image has one universally agreed-upon meaning. Traditions, interpretations, and individual artists vary. This is simply how I’ve learned to approach these elements and use them to help tell a story through a tattoo.

So I decided to do a straight blackout of my upper left arm. This is 3 days after. Very scratchy looking. Patchy. I understand that blackouts may need a second or third pass. But is this terrible or is this normal for a first pass? Because I feel it is and I’m unsure if I should go back to this guy for a touch up when it heals. He said he does free touch ups but this looks rough

Hi! So I am 18 and I’m a huge tattoo enthusiast, my dad has large tattoos as does my grandad and I always wanted to get them as well, so now I’m of age to get one, I have a plan, I am an avid drawer so I have drawn out a basic idea of what I want. I however have no idea how to find a reputable tattoo artist and also how to inquire and ask about size of tattoo and placement.

For additional information, I live in the UK and the idea is personal, I will add the sketch, again, I’m an AVID drawer, I enjoy drawing but I know It’s more of a guideline then what I want it to look like in the end.
