13 Baby Wild Turkeys

These guys have been raising their young in my yard for several years now. Never seen a family this big before!

Our Dennis Hopper is still thriving despite his single leg.

The cats enjoy lazing with him on hot days. I wonder if he would have been the alpha if not for his disability- he’s such a strong, kind, wise boy.

Fighting the Heat

What are ya'll doing for your birds to help them through this heat? I've had chickens several times throughout the years, I have some now, and we always scraped by with the heat waves. Now I have some turkeys, every time I've tried owning turkeys something has gone wrong with them and they've died. I have three 9w old turkeys and one is showing signs if being overly hot. It found it last night getting them into the coop. Puffed up, wings down, resisting food. Today we started with a dip in some water and I notice it has a little bit of an appetite now. I'm going to set up a misting system today as well for all the birds.

Do you have any go-to things for when your turkeys are overheated? I could use any and all ideas!

Can anyone tell me if meat or heritage?

These are 8 weeks old and I believe them to be royal palms as one has a black feather growing in. They are from a feed store which gets from cackle hatchery and they do have white heritage breeds available from cackle. I feel for this size and age they are heritage but I want to be sure. They are currently being socialized to eventually live with my chickens but they don’t spend all day with them yet and are just switching to a 20% protein food. I’m hoping for heritage as they would be nice to help deter hawks and they have wonderful personalities but iam able to give them a proper diet to live full lives if they are meat birds. It was a mixed bin of turkey breeds.

Alabama Opens Wild Turkey Survey to Public Participation

For the first time, Alabama is opening its annual Wild Turkey Brood Survey to the public! You can help wildlife biologists track nesting success and turkey populations across the state by reporting your sightings now through August 31.

Whether you see hens, poults, or gobblers, your observations provide valuable data. Learn how to participate using the Survey123 app or online. We suggest that before you report, you use our resources to brush up on how to accurately identify turkeys and their age class. https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/forestry-wildlife/alabama-opens-wild-turkey-survey-to-public-participation/?fbclid=IwY2xjawSzZxZleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF4ejRrSXVqdGRZRmhDOHBxc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHrpoccdYAzIhC7f7ukLbGGlZrgtcX60aWz2DaQEB6JEA8siBBehxXnqxtYLv_aem_T48OVZGkq8X_bfeg8pdjYA

Is my new turkey okay?

My mom picked this turkey up two days ago he isn’t aggressive but he puffs up every time I go outside and is panting today. I live in Florida so I think it’s probably this high heat we have today. Is this stress panting? Should I be worried? I know he found the water and food so that’s good at least. This is my first experience with a turkey and we basically adopted him from previous owners who needed a new home asap.

Implants in Turkey…

Has anyone traveled to Turkey for dental implants? There are two clinics I am considering going to. Nature dental clinic and Dentspa. I would like to know how your treatment went? How did the dental clinic treat you? How was the hotel? Did you have any issues after returning to the states? Can you find care for your implants in the states?
I have done a lot of research and now would love to talk to people that have been through it..

Is my Leif a tom or a hen?

I’m a first time turkey mom so I don’t know the first thing about sexing poults 😅. Leif is currently our only turkey (but hopefully that will change soon!), and we currently don’t have any plans to breed them so I’m asking mainly out of curiosity. If it is at all important Leif is relatively quiet unless they are happy or excited, they have a leaf obsession, and they seem to enjoy being held.

A question about one of my poults being a tad aggressive more than normal?

Sorry for all of these posts! I'm a newbie and I promise I'm doing the best I can. I just would love some insight and advice to make them more happy. I'm not entirely sure what gender they are. I think the small one is female. She's pretty calm and makes a ton of noises. The huge one hasn't strutted, but he does do things similar to a Tom.

Onto the problem, they are in the house with me during the day. Don't worry, we deep clean every night! 🤣 they also are not messy like our ducks or chickens. The one I'll assume might be a Tom is beyond precious with me and my youngest daughter. He's like a little puppy. My oldest daughter and husband are relentlessly chased by him. He will fly across the room to get at them. No harm done, but my 11 year old got a pretty nice scratch last night. Like I said, I'm not sure he's a male he is just HUGE compared to the other. Is there a reason for his issue with them? He loves my youngest daughter to pieces.

What should I do for the behavior? I can't even think of getting rid of one of them. They are truly my sweet babies. Thank you all! 💖 it's so nice to have a community for things like this

Can turkeys have angel wings?

So my babies are reaching 1 week old and I just realized one of them have strange feathers sticking out on their side. At first I thought it was just more grown, but now I’m unsure.

I don’t think it will affect their health that much I was just curious.
