Organic 1 Chem Question about Lopez

Hi! I signed up for Pete Punthase in my orgo, but for some wierd reason my schedule says that Lopez is teaching the class?? When I checked the system, I didn't see Pete anywhere in the orgo 1 classes. Does anyone know what happened? Also, what is Lopez like as a professor. I checked his rate my professor, and it was REALLY bad. I'm really stressed about this.

Does anyone know what Amal Narayanan & Austin Evans are like as orgo professors? Please help, and no hate pls!

[Lonely Transfer Students: UPDATE]

Here’s my original reddit post:

So I’d say the meetup at the Reitz today was a pretty nice success! We all met up at the Cabo mexican restaurant downstairs, talked for a little about age, major, & transfer from. Turns out some of us are pretty close in age but all definitely at different points in our educational journey. And we did a guys vs girls bowling match! It was nice to hang out with everyone who showed up on the first day!!

I think I got the group-chat to 16 members, and about 11 showed up! I really wanted to do pool, but bowling was a good all around activity for a group of that size.

I’m thinking next time I wanna do pool for sure, at the Reitz or even somewhere else.

Lemme know what y’all think. & don’t forget to leave me some suggestions!

Making Friends

So I’m an out of state freshman who knows nobody here. Plus, I stay in a one bedroom off campus apartment(a decision I now regret ngl). Joining a frat isn’t really my thing, and I’m trying to join clubs that interest me, but I find it kind of hard to meet people here when everyone else already knows each other. Anybody got any advice on what I should do to meet some more people?

Lonely Transfer Students: I’m calling on YOU

Hi y’all, I’m a 22 year old transfer from Ocala studying Public Relations.

As I’ve been going to some new student stuff, I’m noticing all the people I’ve talked to so far are freshman, who I don’t really have much in common with.

To me as a transfer student, it gets pretty lonely when everyone is younger than you or completely experiencing college/life with fresh eyes.

So since tomorrow is the first day of classes, I’m thinking of doing some kind of meet up for transfers at the ground level of the Reitz Union? What do y’all think?

My class ends at 1:40, so maybe a meetup at like 2? I think transfers should stick together and get to know each-other, especially if you’re lonely af like me lol.

If you’re interested comment or PM me!

Xiaofei Bai at UFGI has been reported for misconduct

I really wish someone had warned me about this lab before I joined. The issue isn’t just that Bai is “strict” or “has high expectations.” He makes completely unnecessary personal comments about people’s appearances, their personal lives, and other things that have absolutely nothing to do with their work. There’s a difference between giving someone constructive criticism and constantly making things personal.

There’s also been an HR report concerning his behavior, which honestly shouldn’t be surprising if you’ve spent any amount of time around the lab.

And the turnover speaks for itself. Of the 4 graduate students he has had, 3 have left. At what point does the department stop looking at each person who leaves as the problem and start asking what the common denominator is?

Now undergrads are apparently being asked to sign a 7-page contract just to work in the lab. 💀 I genuinely don't know what kind of undergraduate research position needs a seven-page agreement, but given everything else, it definitely raises some questions.

The most frustrating part is that he seems completely incapable of recognizing that HE might be contributing to the problems in his lab. Somehow everyone else is always the issue.

If you're thinking about joining Bai's lab, talk to former lab members before you commit. Seriously. Ask why people left, ask about mentorship, and ask what the day-to-day environment is actually like.

I’m not saying this because the research isn't interesting. I'm saying it because good research is not worth putting yourself through a terrible lab environment.

STOLEN PLANT FROM COURTYARDS :( URGENT!!!

An avocado tree my partner grew from a seed has been STOLEN from Courtyards, Gainesville. From the courtyard of Building B, between some point last night and 12pm today. If anyone knows someone who took it, or if you yourself took it, PLEASE message me. This is a plant of extreme sentimental importance. You will not get in trouble if you give her back. I will offer a reward to anyone with information on her condition.

ANYTHING. Thank you. She needs specific conditions and we are greatly worried about her safety.

Any engineers out there, which type of computer should I get for EE

So I’m an incoming Sophomore starting UF this Fall (majoring in Electrical Engineering), and I just finished all my critical trackings.

Basically, I’ve heard that for engineering, I need a strong computer that can handle all the work I’m going to be doing throughout the next 2 years in EE. However, I’m still stumped as to which one is the best computer to use.

For ref, I have an ASUS Windows 11 with a 13th Gen Intel Core processor (i7-13620H). I was wondering if any EE/engineer majors had any recommendations for computers I should invest in, any suggestions are greatly appreciated🫡

Housing Hunt/ Reviews

Hi yall! I'll be moving to Gainesville around the end of October for school, I'll be coming from Jax and will only be able to tour all apartments one day. I'm in the process of looking for some good places (1bed/1bath) to rent under $1,200, preferably under $1,000. I'm open to condo, apartment, townhomes, but NO shared homes/apartments. I understand it's harder without a roommate but I personally can not live with one.
I would also prefer them to not have a roach infestation. I'm a natural born Floridian so I know there's roaches everywhere but those little German roaches...HELL NO. (Granted I'm okay with a few because I do have my own personal pest control and it's to be expected).
A in unit washer and dryer would also be great, but I'm not to stuck on it as long as it's within budget.
I'd also like it to be within walking distance of UF Law or not too far from a bus stop that takes me directly to/from school.
A couple of Apartments I'm considering:
Towne Parc
The Standard
Villa Ravine
The Wynwood
Hammocks by Butler
Hidden Village
The Grande @ Gainesville (formerly known as Prairie View?)
The Park Apartments (3643 SW 20th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32607)
If you have any recommendations that meet my needs please share!! And if you have any reviews on the apartments I've listed please let me know as I'm a bit iffy because the google reviews are either personal(not returning calls emails, general vibe) or they're from years ago so I'm not sure if they had or not.
Thank you in advance! I truly appreciate all the help I can get SERIOUSLYxx!

college park at midtown, fuck you

genuinely the worst apartment i've ever lived in in my life. infested with german roaches (normal for GNV though), broken window, door doesn't lock properly, broken AC, baseboards are SO nasty, lots of cracks, crevices, random holes. these clowns even painted over a whole lizard. my god this place genuinely sucks and i wanted to complain, do NOT pick the $1000 floor plan it is NOT WORTH IT DO NOT LIVE HERE!!

if anyone does have roach advice though please share im screwed as long as this lease stands

edit: didn't mention this but they're also pretty scummy. took extra money from me for no reason, really vague on information, management never knows what the hell you're talking about, and as a bonus internet is included but if your previous tenant STEALS THE ROUTER then they just tell you to take a hike and buy your own. amazing
