4 days left until Valve turns 30. What are we actually expecting?
Hey everyone!
We’re officially four days away from Valve’s 30th anniversary on August 24th. The hopium in my veins is reaching dangerous levels again, but I’m trying really hard to keep my expectations grounded so I don't end up wearing a clown nose on Monday.
Personally, I feel like hoping for a Half-Life 3 / HLX drop right now is pure, unadulterated copium. I definitely wouldn't bet money on it, though there's always that tiny 0.1% part of my brain whispering "what if?".
Realistically, I think we're mostly looking at a big Steam anniversary sale and maybe a new documentary from the Secret Tape team—which honestly would be amazing after what they did for HL1 and HL2. As for the rest of the year, Tyler McVicker mentioned we probably shouldn't expect any HLX announcements in 2026, but Valve is Valve. Plans change all the time, and who knows what might pop up in Source 2 code updates later this fall (and maybe soon we'll get some updates for CS2/Dota 2/Deadlock?).
What’s your take on this? Are you expecting just a casual sale, hoping for a documentary, or fully OD'ing on hopium for an actual HLX tease? Let’s hear your theories! 🧳λ
💉🐇🔋
Do we think valve is doing anything for their 30th anniversary on Monday
They celebrated the 20th half life 2 anniversary and 25th half life anniversary. They celebrated the 20th steam anniversary, they’re clearly interested in celebrating anniversaries. And with the steam frame video being leaked and the other hardware videos being released on monday. Do y’all think there’s a chance they do anything special or will it just be a regular day?
Valve Hawaii Vacation Pin Collection
A slightly less small collection compared to the images I shared a few months back. Big fan of the Old Aperture sunset pin!
What if every TF2 match moved one persistent RED vs BLU frontline?
I'm building GREYLINE FRONTRESS on top of Team Comtress 2 (TF2 fork). Where instead of picking isolated matches, you deploy from a persistent RED vs BLU war map.
Win a match -> your front advances.
Advance far enough -> a new battle opens.
With 8 players there may be one 4v4 front. With 40 players the war can split into several fronts.
Think of the shared-war feeling of Helldivers 2 and Frontline (Foxhole, yeah, I forgot its name) game, but built around TF2 PvP.
So what do you think about that idea? Storyline in TF2?
My horrendous steam machine journey
[Mostly solved, edit at the bottom of the post]
So I am a simple gal: months ago when I got the email stating the steam machine waitilist opened and instantly joined the 512 no controller one, like 14 minutes after it opened. Then, a couple weeks ago to my surprise, the email saying I could finally buy it arrived and I paid Valve to send me this Steam Machine. So for now everything went as expected.
Then I quickly discovered the courier chosen by valve was GLS, and I screamed in pain because GLS is know in italy to be one of the worst ever. In my area they simply don’t deliver the parcels AT ALL. Exactly, they don’t ring the doorbell and they don’t hand you the package. How are they still in business? Only god knows.
However, the package didn’t arrive at home as expected so I went to the local warehouse and after complaining they told me they actually had 2 packages for me with the same id so I guess 2 SMs and they didn’t know which one was the correct one. So CEVA (the third party courier VALVE paid to handle EU deliveries) sent 2 erroneously, while exposing all my personal data in the recent data breach.
Then the GLS local warehouse attempted contacting CEVA to know how to handle the situation and they didn’t reply, so they decided to arbitrarily change the tracking to “delivered” while I didn’t have neither the money or the SM, that technically is a crime because the tracking is a legally valid document.
After insisting in solving the situation after almost one week of the SM being officially “delivered” to no one, they magically had a reply from CEVA and proceeded handling the “correct” package. I guess they just handled me one randomly and straight up stolen the other.
So, after like 2 weeks, 4 rides to the warehouse with 40° celsius (around 100F) and many many complaints I have this SM and I’ve been exhausted by the super horrendous handling by all the parties involved, including VALVE support that has been basically non existent, handwashing by saying “we’re not handling the shipping”.
So I decided to return the SM to valve and they straight up ignored all the complaints and difficulties and sent me the return message… WITH THE WRONG SERIAL! Because GLS handled me “some box” randomly and now I have the SM that could be marked as stolen! The famous “customer first” valve support has been again non existant and I’m sincerely exhausted and honestly mad at VALVE for this horrendous process of getting a freaking steam machine that in the end could have make my whole account banned because:
Valve. Sent. Me. A. Stolen. Steam. Machine.
Thank you Valve. Really thank you.
EDIT: they sent me a second message after letting them know the SN they have in their system is different from the SN of the SM in my possession. They wrote to "rest assured that we'll sort out the serial number discrepancy at the returns facility."
I'll update this post, but it looks like that the problem is finally solved.
To broke for even a dollar

From Counter-Strike Mod to Standalone Game Part 2
Hey everyone,
About a year ago I made a post here about my story with Polystrike (PART 1 - https://www.reddit.com/r/valve/s/0q1i6i1P6M), how it started as a Counter-Strike inspired mod and eventually became a standalone game.
I said back then that we weren't giving up on it, so I thought it would be fair to come back with an update :)
The last year wasn't easy for us. We're a Ukrainian team, some people from our team were mobilized, we had constant power outages, delays, and sadly we also lost people because of the war.
Development took much longer than we planned, but we kept going.
And finally, POLYSTRIKE is officially announced on Steam.
So now instead of me writing another huge post explaining what the game is supposed to be, you can actually see it yourself.
We released our first gameplay trailer showing the game, weapons, maps and some of the mechanics we've been working on.
It's now its own game and universe, but you can probably still see where my love for Counter-Strike and modding started all of this :)
I'm really interested in what people here think about it, especially those who remember the old Polystrike.
Good or bad, feel free to tell me what you think. What you like, what you don't like, and if this is something you would actually play.

Thanks to everyone who supported the project back then. We didn't give up!
Bit of a crazy one that still doesn’t feel real. I’m a writer and my first book has been published today. It’s all about action horror games and features interviews with a bunch of iconic names - including the first chapter, with John!
John’s enthusiasm and honesty really sets the tone for some pretty personal stories throughout the rest of the book, which features chapters with Ken Levine, Marc Laidlaw, Maggie Robertson and many others.
It’s a dream come true for me. To round it off, John agreed to write the foreword, in which he says some immensely nice things about my work.
I figured people here might get a kick out of an in-depth, sit down chat with the great man himself. Oh, and the book features a killer jacket designed by comic book artist Ray Dillon.
‘Beyond Fear: Inside Action Horror Games’ is available online and across most countries right now, with pre-orders also happening in the US. I’d love for the community to check it out! Thank you and feel free to drop me any questions🤘
EDIT - I’ve had a few requests for links to order, so please see below 😊 Huge thank you to anyone who picks it up!

Doubt regarding getting a job at Valve
Hello, I'm a Cse engineer.. and I was wondering about the probability of getting into valve. I'll share my current status and my trajectory, so you could get an idea.
So I'm currently in my second year (just started with my 2nd year), in India. I am a core cse student (no specialisation that's imposed by my college), and I'm also a part of my college racing team, participating in both national and international sae baja events. I just became a member around 3 months back and I'm still in my training phase. I've worked with tools like Solidworks and Fusion 360. In a couple of weeks I'll also have worked with lotus shark and ansys and other tools. I've decided to work with the vehicle dynamics department as I've done some reading, and found out that for game dev it can be a pretty good asset. I've got drivetrain ideas that might be patent worthy and for the vehicle dynamics department also I might be able to come up with some things, but for now I have nothing as such. By the end of my 3 year tenure, I should be well versed with quite a few mech tools and vehicular physics, and also have practical knowledge of physically working on the car. Currently I'm a pretty strong member of my batch who got selected, and I'm hoping to climb higher in the department ranks in my tenure.. and I'm also a bit of an odd duck cause I'm the only non mechanical student to have gotten into the team for the past few years.
For the cse side, I've done very basic c, c++ and Java and I'm a little more well versed with MySQL/sqlplus and python. I'm starting to work on improving my skills in c++ as I'm planning to work with Unreal 5. So currently I've made plans to develop more knowledge in c++ and concepts in dsa that might help. I'm hoping that in about 6-8 months I should be able to start with unreal, very basic projects. Parallelly I'm hoping to make a data rig, the first of its kind, for our racing car and use the telemetry to build physics engines. So there's that also. I'm targeting to use these as my trajectory for the next 3 years until I get my graduation.
Along with that I've also worked on Aseprite for custom drawings and animations, and if I get the time I'm planning to start with blender to make detailed animations and assets.. but currently I've not given it a rock solid position in my timeline.
I've heard that valve only acquires employees who have good experience, so I'm targeting to get into companies like Saber interactive or EA or Rockstar or other such companies. Work on teams developing AA and AAA companies for at least 5-10 years at the very least. After serving that tenure I'm hoping that it should update my chances of getting into valve.
I've asked claude and chatgpt to analyse my career trajectory and it's saying that I have a pretty decent chance as long as I am able to stick to my trajectory and not stray too far off.. but AI doesn't always give accurate data, and also makes it a little hopecore because of how they are modelled. That's why I was wondering I'd ask in this subreddit, and saw a bunch of other people asking similar stuff.
(If you have any suggestions for my career trajectory then please do let me know.. I'm still in the initial stages and trying to incorporate them would be great)
(Also I'm aware that game dev folks usually start with unity and godot, but I'm planning to not waste time there and get into unreal directly as I'm getting into it a little later than what my peers have done)
I'm working on a WebAssembly port of Portal 1
Hi everyone!!
I've been working on a WebAssembly/browser port of Portal 1.
This project is still a work in progress and has not been released yet.
Right now the port is already playable, and I've got things like:
• Portals working(with some render issues)
• Multiple levels working
• Saving/loading working
• Game files working
• Persistent game data
• Sounds working(they sound weird but still a great to point out here)
• OpenGL related issues fixed(most)
I'm currently working on improving SDL2 problems and fixing some compatibility issues.
https://reddit.com/link/1vq4s0z/video/7k3so3we4sjh1/player
One of the things I'm working on right now is making achievements persist globally across game files, so they aren't tied to a single save.
This is still a work in progress, but I thought I'd Post it since I haven't seen many attempts at getting the full Portal 1 experience running this way.
Also, thank you if youre reading this far!!!
You guys think that saxton ball hair is shaped like Australia like how is chest hair is?
My interview with Marc Laidlaw is now live!
I posted on here a few months ago about my chat with Marc Laidlaw, which is included in my book, Beyond Fear: Inside Action Horror Games.
I’m excited to say it’s now available across the US and rest of the world in hardback and ebook form!
Marc is an amazing writer and wonderful guy. He goes in-depth on Half-Life, his regrets and so much more. It was an eye-opening interview and something I’m really proud to share with the HL community.
Others interviewed at length in the book include John Romero, Ken Levine and Maggie Robertson.
I’d love for as many people as possible to read it. You can grab it from Amazon or any other reputable book store.
Thank you for the support!
