Hey everyone!

​We’re officially four days away from Valve’s 30th anniversary on August 24th. The hopium in my veins is reaching dangerous levels again, but I’m trying really hard to keep my expectations grounded so I don't end up wearing a clown nose on Monday.

​Personally, I feel like hoping for a Half-Life 3 / HLX drop right now is pure, unadulterated copium. I definitely wouldn't bet money on it, though there's always that tiny 0.1% part of my brain whispering "what if?".

​Realistically, I think we're mostly looking at a big Steam anniversary sale and maybe a new documentary from the Secret Tape team—which honestly would be amazing after what they did for HL1 and HL2. As for the rest of the year, Tyler McVicker mentioned we probably shouldn't expect any HLX announcements in 2026, but Valve is Valve. Plans change all the time, and who knows what might pop up in Source 2 code updates later this fall (and maybe soon we'll get some updates for CS2/Dota 2/Deadlock?).

Is it worth doing all the achievements in Black Mesa?

I decided to complete the game for the first time after HL1 and HL2 with episodes. At first, I'll just go through it for fun. But is it worth it to complete all the achievements in the game? How difficult is it?

Actually, my friends and I joked that if I go through Half-Life 2 (+ episodes), Black Mesa, Portal and Portal 2, then... Gabe is announcing H3. They picked it up and now I feel a debt. It will be very funny if that happens. XD

Upgraded to B760 / i5-12400F, now stuck in a brutal VGA LED loop with GTX 1060. Need permanent fix.

Hey everyone, I'm losing my mind here and desperately need some insight from people who know how modern motherboard UEFIs behave.

My Setup:

CPU: Intel Core i5-12400F

MOBO: Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4

GPU: MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB (carried over from my old ASRock Z87 Extreme6 / i5-4460 build due to budget)

The Backstory (Round 1):

A week ago, I put everything together, and it flat out refused to boot. Hard lock on VGA LED (red light), GPU fans not spinning, no signal on the monitor. For two full days, I tried absolutely everything: swapping cables, reseating RAM in every config, clearing CMOS via battery, cleaning GPU gold contacts with an eraser. I even ran the NVIDIA DisplayPort firmware update tool on the card and flashed the motherboard's BIOS via Q-Flash Plus button to the latest version. Nothing worked.

The GPU itself is 100% alive and healthy. I literally benched my old Z87 system on a cardboard box, put the 1060 in, and it booted instantly, passing all stress tests perfectly.

Then my friend came over with his spare parts. We tried his RAM — no post. We tried his GTX 1080 Ti — same dead hang on VGA LED. But then, we threw in an ancient office GT 730, and BOOM, we got into the BIOS.

older transition-era Pascal/Maxwell cards in pure UEFI mode by default. We had to roll back the BIOS version via Q-Flash to find a more stable firmware, force PCIe Gen 3 speed, and manually enable CSM / Legacy mode. After that, both the 1080 Ti and my 1060 started working perfectly. I used the PC for a week without a single hitch.

The Current Nightmare (Round 2):

Today, I decided to install a new drive. To make things easier and comfortable, I pulled the GTX 1060 out of the slot. Installed the drive, slotted the GPU back in, hooked up the power, turned it on... and THE FREAKING VGA LED IS BACK. Black screen, no signal again.

How does pulling a working card out and putting it back in trigger a hardware conflict? My theory is that the board encountered a minor initialization hiccup, triggered its built-in "Watchdog / Safe Boot" feature after a failed post, and stealthily reset the BIOS to factory defaults — which means CSM is now DISABLED again, locking me out of my own GPU.

My Questions:

  1. Is there ANY way to force this crappy Gigabyte board to enable CSM or bypass the VGA check without having a modern UEFI-native GPU or an old GT 730 on hand? (I'm literally buying that GT 730 from my friend for $10 just to keep it as a "BIOS entry key", which is ridiculous).

  2. Why are modern B760 chipsets so aggressively hostile toward older cards, to the point where even a GTX 1080 Ti throws a fit until CSM is toggled?

I guess this is a sign to urgently upgrade to an RTX 4060 Ti 16GB or an RTX 4070, but right now I just want my PC back. Any help or permanent workarounds would be highly appreciated!
