Traveling to zanzibar this year.

Hi everyone,

This year i am planning on traveling from Netherlands to Zanzibar comming november. I am looking for general tips and/or help for planning stays. I plan on staying there for about 10 days and would like a healthy mix of beach time and sightseeing. Any reccomendations would be appriciated!

*edit*

To be more specific, Obviously i've looked around online but there seem to be some questionable lodges and places. So i am preferably looking for someone who's been there and had first hand experiences. my budget for 10-12 nights is about 1-2k euro and i dont expect luxury resorts. but i would like basic comfort. Clean rooms, aircon and beach side and food that doesnt instantly kill my european bowels :).

Jambiani, Matemwe or Kendwa???

We have 7 nights in Zanzibar and plan to split our time between 2 areas, but I’m really torn on where to go.
I keep seeing that most people recommend Nungwi or Kendwa (north) because the beaches are beautiful and swimmable regardless of tides. But I’m unsure if that area is right for us.
My hesitation:
Sounds quite busy/touristy
Read that beach vendors (“beach boys”) can be persistent
Not sure we want a party/resort feel
So my question is: are we actually missing out if we skip the north completely? We do love the beach and swimming in the ocean, so I don’t want to make a mistake.

For our second base, I’m deciding between:
🏝 Matemwe vs Jambiani
Matemwe:
Looks stunning and relaxed
Maybe a bit more “resort / quiet luxury”
Closer to Mnemba trips (which we’d consider)
Jambiani:
More of a village atmosphere
Seems more cultural / local life feel
Worried it could be either perfect… or a bit too busy / scruffy?

What we’re looking for:
Beautiful beach (important)
Good swimming / ocean time
Not too crowded or touristy
Some local culture, but not chaos
Relaxed vibe (not party resort)

If you had 7 nights, how would you split them and why? Would you skip the north entirely or is it worth 2–3 nights?

Can any UK folks confirm these new direct TUI flights to Zanzibar are actually happening? Trying to verify the details.

Habari everyone. I am a tour operator here in Tanzania, is it true that TUI is starting direct flights from the UK to Zanzibar? Kindly confirm for me.

I run a small safari and tour company here in Tanzania, so when this news reached me I got interested very fast. Now I am hoping you people who are closer to the UK travel side can help me confirm if it is real.

There is a UK travel agent newsletter that came to me saying TUI is about to begin direct flights from London Gatwick to Zanzibar, and they say it is the first time a UK company is flying there without connection. The information they gave me is like this:

  • Direct, London Gatwick to Zanzibar, no stopping in between
  • Two times per week, Wednesday and Sunday
  • From around November 2027 up to March 2028 (the winter season)
  • The flight is about 10 hours
  • 7 nights all-inclusive starting around £1,615 per person, and already on sale

It sounds correct, but you know these newsletters, sometimes they mix up the details (even this one had some dates that were not adding up properly). So before I start telling my own guests that this thing is confirmed, let me first hear from you people who are there on the ground.

So my questions are like this:

  1. Can somebody kindly confirm this is real, and the dates and schedule above are correct? Has anyone seen it live to book, or even booked it already?
  2. Is it only for this one winter season, or TUI is showing they will continue with it, maybe even the whole year, if it sells well?
  3. From your UK side, is Zanzibar really known these days, or for most people it is still "where is that place?" I just want to understand how much real interest is there.
  4. Now this one is my selfish operator question. When people in the UK hear Zanzibar, do they think only beach? Or do they know you can add a proper safari on the mainland also? Serengeti and Ngorongoro are just a short flight from Zanzibar. Would that interest people, or 10 hours flying is already enough and they just want to rest on the sand?
  5. And what matters most for you when you are choosing a long-haul beach holiday in winter, is it the price, the flight time, the all-inclusive resorts, or the culture and the excursions?

I am asking because this thing can change how many of us here plan for that 2027/28 season. But also, honestly I am just curious how it is being received over there by you.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. 🙏

Day trip recommendations

What would be the best boat day trips, from either Nungwi Paje or Stone Town areas?

I was quite interested in Mnembe until I read about how horrible the dolphins are treated. I would love to see them but don't want to be involved in causing them stress.

I just found Tumbatu tours - is this a good tour?

Also interested in the sandbars off Stone Town

Thanks for any recs

** Doesn't have to be organized tour - happy to hear of any hidden gem places to visit as well

Tea Recommendations?

Hello! I’m visiting with my family this week and wanted to see what teas you all recommend to try/take home? My friends are big into tea so I wanted to bring a few home as gifts.

Coffee recommendations would be great as well, thanks!

Help with booking Tanzania!

Bit of a happy problem but my boyfriend wants to plan a spontaneous trip to Tanzania. We're from south east asia and I don't have anyone I know who has planned a trip there so would love to get your opinions on the itinerary from the agent! We're a young couple who love art, food and architecture so trying to see how I can make the itinerary more beautiful and interesting. Doing my research as we speak so anything helps.

It's last minute and high season, so it'll be expensive but would love your opinion on whether we're getting good value

Questions:

-Is this enough days? We're moving around alot so wondering if we should drop one destination or extend the trip by 2-3 days.

-What do you think of lodging options and pricing? We were also sent these other options to "upgrade'

Lemala nanyuki (900-1350usd)
One nature nyaruswiga (2200-2900usd)
Namiri plains (1300-1800usd)
Serengeti explorer dunia camp (900-1300usd)
Nyikani central serengeti (650-950usd)
Four seasons safari lodge (1000-1500usd)

I love a luxe but eclectic/funky hotel with cool architecture so any recommendations are welcomed!

-Any activities/sights or restaurants you'll recommend!

-If anyone has an agent they've used and liked before - please let me know :)

Help us decide on a hotel for honeymoon

My partner and I are planning our 5-night honeymoon for this November and are currently torn between Zanzibar and Mauritius. For those who have been to both, would you choose one over the other for a short 5-night honeymoon?

We’re prioritizing great beaches, good food, and access to activities. We aren't worried about crowds and prefer to stay at one resort for the full trip.

Would you prefer the mora (which is now slightly cheaper) over RIU jambo or vice versa and why? Or are there better alternatives in our case? Im struggling planning this as it will be our honeymoon.

Tanazani safari

Hi I’m looking to book a Serengeti safari in Jan 2027 and I found a company called Safari-T.Z online
They seem really professional in answering my questions and providing quotes.

I wonder if anyone has heard of them or has any tips for local tour operators . I’m looking at 3-4 nights with a budget of around £1,800 max is this possible even?

Thanks for any advice !!

Day-trip from Dar - Feasible? Recommendable?

As the title suggests - I will be in Dar es Salaam for a couple days in July and was thinking of dedicating one of those days to a trip to Zanzibar. Is that doable? Is it worth it for such a short time?

Any advice/experiences are welcome!

Help a preggy girl out?

Hello fellow travelers and enthusiasts. A few years ago I traveled to Tanzania and Zanzibar for a course on Human Geography and our professor organised a trip to a spice farm on the island. I greatly enjoyed this experience and at the end of the tour purchased a small bottle of perfume produced and sold by the farm afterwards. It has been 3 years and I use it sparingly, because it is so delightful and I only have a small amount. Now I am pregnant and sensitive to smells, it is one of the only things I like to put to my nose these days LOL. It smells like summer in a bottle.

I tried my hardest to find a chemist's match, but I do not even know what is it in or the scent profile as it is just a tiny glass bottle with a taped on label that says ZANZIBAR MIX. I tried to track down the exact tour and spice farm to see if they had a website or a contact I could ask questions to, but to no avail. It seems there are only one or two options for the tour anyhow.

I know this is a long shot, but anyone traveling anytime soon and participating in a spice farm tour would do me the biggest kindest and pick up a couple of bottles, of course paid for? Then we can figure out how to send it depending on where you are from. I will pay postage as well. Maybe it is a big ask, but it happened before when I went to Faroe Islands we picked up a figurine for someone who broke theirs, so I am hoping that it is my turn!

Anyways, have happy and safe travels. :)

Sincerely,

A very olfactory-oriented pregnant lady!

Stay in Paje vs Nungwi

Need some Zanzibar advice!

I’m doing a 4-day safari first, then arriving in Zanzibar on Friday, 10 July (around noon) and flying out on Monday, 13 July (around noon).

We’re three 25-year-old female friends travelling together.

Current plan:
- Sunday night already booked at Hostel 197 (Nungwi)
- Considering Drifters Hostel or Your Zanzibar Place for Friday & Saturday

Priorities:
- Swimming
- Water sports/activities
- Good cafés
- Young/social crowd
- One good party night
- Relaxing after safari
- Cultural indulgence is possible

I’ve heard Paje is best for the vibe, cafés, nightlife, and activities, but I’m concerned about the tides and swimming.

Would you:
Do 2 nights Paje + 1 night Nungwi?
Stay all 3 nights in Paje?

Pick Drifters or Your Zanzibar Place?

Also, how are the tides in Paje in mid-July, and are there any other hostels/areas you’d recommend based on our priorities? Is stonetown worth visiting in this short span?
