(For sale, spares/repairs) ZX Spectrum 48K Issue 2 from 1982
SOLD
(quoting my AmiBay post)
Selling this to a good home as I've been meaning to repair for a while but held off it and don't have the proper tools.
Sinclair ZX Spectrum, issue 2 (1982). Won't turn on, voltage regulator blown and needs a new keyboard membrane, unsure if anything else wrong. £25, will bundle PSU and RF cable for £5 extra (if using own PSU, takes centre negative 9V). Photos of the internals + voltage regulator damage are shown. £5 postage in the UK or collection in Northern Ireland.
ZX Touch handheld now renders scene based real time FX
The device, which does bare-metal emulation of the ZX Spectrum 8 bit home micro, has been updated with new firmware.
A major change is the ZX Touch FX system which can apply multiple effects to the screen in real time, completely changing the way a game looks, without any ROM mods.
It works by detecting markers on the screen which can be used to identify on which scene, level, menu or screen the player is. Up to 10 effects can then be applied, which are rendered within a single screen frame.
Effects can be color changes, adding strokes / outlines, adding background images, adding shaders and selectively changing transparency.
Up to 50 markers can be placed per game and can be stored in a single file that can include the game ROM.

Spectrum game that let you choose the type of colour clash?
I've a vague memory of playing a Spectrum game that had a menu option that let you pick whether sprite or background colours took priority over the other. I think it was a Dizzy-style platform/adventure game, where you had to pick up objects and take them to the right locations to solve puzzles.
Not much to go on I know, but does anybody have any idea what the game was?
West Bank
Do you remember this gem? One of my favourite games: you are a guard in a bank and you can't let the bad guys get through, you must not shoot good guys. I play it on emulator even nowadays sometimes.
Help with identifying zx spectrum cassette
I found this cassette in my uncles old collection, ive got a good very good condition silver labels but this one catches my eye. Chatgpt fails to identify it. What makes this interesting is that it says Psion Ltd 1982. Thats pretty early for spectrum games. The first image shows that side with all other info needed. The second image has the words blank tape and nothing else but sinclair zx spectrum logo. Would be great if this could be identified. Thanks! If anyone wants to see the load of games my uncle dropped to me incase there's any rare ones let me know. Thanks!
[Show IF] A modern JSON-based PAWS engine & interpreter for classic 8-bit adventures with improved intent guessing and enhanced graphics
Hi everyone,
I’ve been working on a project that sits at the intersection of retro reverse-engineering and modern software architecture. Like many of you, I grew up obsessed with 8-bit text adventures created with the Professional Adventure Writing System (PAWS).
While I love the nostalgia of these games, we all know the classic frustration: the rigid Verb + Noun parser and the dreaded "guess-the-verb" bottlenecks. To bridge this gap, I’ve built a modern interpreter and a transformation pipeline to bring these classics into the 2020s.
The Reverse Engineering Challenge
Since original source databases for these games are rarely preserved—only Z80 emulator snapshots remain—I went down a heavy reverse-engineering rabbit hole. I’ve implemented a tool in Ruby that extends the concepts of legacy extractors like unPAWS to achieve 100% data recovery.
My pipeline now dumps the entire game logic into a clean, highly readable JSON file. This includes:
- Full vocabulary, messages, and logical instruction blocks ("condacts").
- User-defined charsets.
- Original vector-based graphic primitive commands (points, lines, fills, and patterns).
To streamline this, I built a Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool to interface directly with the ZEsarUX emulator. This allowed me to automate memory dumps, compare state changes, and handle disassembly through a high-level orchestration layer.
What the Engine Does Right Now:
- Web & Terminal UI: Play classic games natively in a browser with modern typography and full fidelity.
- Semantic Intent Layer: I’ve added a middleware layer that acts as a translator. If a player types a natural language sentence, the engine performs a semantic mapping to rewrite it into the precise syntactic command the original logic expects (e.g., translating a complex phrase into exactly SAY TO EDDIE "DANGER").
- Dynamic Visual Reinterpretation: The interpreter reads original Spectrum vector commands and uses modern neural rendering models to reinterpret them in real-time. You can switch visual styles (pixel art, digital painting, etc.) while maintaining the original composition.
- Developer Tooling: Includes a feature-rich visual debugger to trace flags, full playthrough transcription, and autoplay for integration testing.
Next Steps: A Modern Authoring Tool
Because the core engine decouples the game logic from old hardware and runs entirely on readable JSON, it has evolved into a full framework. You can already write a brand new adventure entirely in JSON from scratch.
My next big milestone is a Graphical Adventure Editor to facilitate the creation of new narrative games using this reimagined interpreter.
I’m posting technical updates and devlogs here: 👉https://shorturl.at/MsziX
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the architecture, the challenges of preserving vector-based graphics, and what features you’d like to see in a modern JSON-backed adventure editor!
a stupid question about video connectors
is rca and composite video the same thing or is it compatibile with composite modded spectrum?

youtube.comLoft archaeology - ZX time capsule
Digging a test pit in the attic and I've found a time capsule from the past. Can't remember what happened to the 48K, but there's a boxed +2A Lightgun set-up up there.
More obscure tapes to follow, many of them games I'd completely forgotten about.
ZX Touch updated: now adds FTP and HTTP file transfer, and FX system to change the look of games
Over a year since the last software update, but here it is.
Version 1.13 adds FTP and HTTP transfer of files over WiFi so you no longer need to move your SD cards around. It also works for transferring files from a phone for example.
The FX System allows you to add shaders, effects and backgrounds to games without changing the ROM file.
You can change things in any game by using markers: the device can detect things on the screen such as a level number and then in real time add effects based on that marker. For example you can change the game based on the level or screen that you're in.

Blaster Master As a ZX Spectrum Game
Used BasinC along with multiple passes of different elements converted from the original map rips in interesting spots. I will probably look at what it may appear with actual 'sprites' injected onto the screen in non-tile locations for fun. For now, mostly just backgrounds.
