1966 Château Franc-Mayne, Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion
I want to start off by saying that I had just broken my one and only wine glass and it was between this glass or a mason jar.
I bought this bottle a couple months ago at an estate sale in Topanga Canyon, CA for $10. My girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me last night and so it seemed like an obvious day to open.
The cork and fill level looked excellent for a 60 year old bottle. Upon opening the seal at the top, the cork was excessively moldy, and put up quite a fight getting out of the neck. Eventually after 20 minutes of meticulous work and cussing under my breath, I had to push the cork into the bottle, and resorted to pouring it into a pitcher through a coffee filter.
Upon opening it, the initial blast of volatile compounds and vinegar and fruit was extremely potent and almost unpleasant; very nauseating. I let it sit open for half an hour rather than decanting, hoping for the smell to change dramatically, as I’ve experienced in the past with old wines.
After letting it sit for half an hour my patience got the best of me and I had a small taste. Initially, it tasted like unremarkable wine, then almost immediately something dominated my palate and I’m really not sure how to describe it. The taste of mud from a river comes to mind (which I’ve heard can be called ‘terroir’ in some pretentious circles). The initial acidity spikes my tongue like I had just licked a live wire. The rest of the flavor is incredibly deep and leathery, it almost tastes like it’s alive. If grapes had bones, this is what the broth would taste like. The wall of flavor blocking the fruitiness I can only assume is probably tannins and sediment compounds; characteristic of old Bordeaux that’s past its prime but not entirely dead. It’s not gone, it’s just very tired.
Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel. It feels like I just drank the blood of an old french mythical creature. I’m gonna go my local winery and see if the guy that works there wants to come to my place after he gets off and share this experience with me. Thanks everyone.
