Have an old beat up Ruger single six that I’m tinkering on. Bluing is in pretty rough shape, some putting on the barrel, a few dings here and there, nothing crazy, but definitely seen some years. I actually really like the way it looks, so what I’m thinking of trying is matching the aluminum ejector rod housing and grip frame to the rest of the gun. Ideally I’d use Cerakote, but I’m not currently setup to do it and honestly not a huge deal if I use rattle can stuff. I’m thinking I can maybe use Alumahyde or maybe like VHT header paint in Black, brown and silver, and layer them in thin coats to mimic the looks of the browned steel. Maybe use a sponge here and there for the mottled areas, don’t have all the details figured out yet. Has anybody done something similar, and if so what did you use and how did you apply it?
It’s been fun. For me this is one of those bottles I will probably replace, but due to the price and having enough options at home to keep me happy for a while, it may be sometime before I buy it again. Had some ups and downs with how much I enjoyed this bottle, some days it was spicy cough syrup that left my mouth dry, others were chocolate dipped cherries with nice tobacco on the finish. When it was good, it was GOOD. But for whatever reason that experience was just inconsistent for me. Anyway, enough rambling. Cheers, and happy Sunday to everybody!
Was bored and was thinking about whether or not I want to try KC Bourbon X Rye. Decided to experiment and make my own blend to get an idea of whether I’d like it or not. I like high rye bourbons and barely legal ryes so figured there’s a good chance I’d like it. Anyhow, the closest options I have to make this blend were Knob Creek Reserve and Old Overholt 114 (it’s rye, and it’s Beam, figured that’s as close as I can get even though the proof is a tad higher). Blended them in my glen by eye to roughly the 30/70 bourbon rye mixture used in KC BxR and added two drops of filtered water to bring down the proof. Results? Pretty damn good. The already hot nose of the KC Reserve gets a boost from the rye, and grabs your attention with aggressive cinnamon, honey, and allspice. Roasted peanuts, oak, and a bit of dill are in the background. Palate is sweeter than I remember the KC Reserve, in a really nice way. Glad I added the water, as it’s still got some nice heat to it. Lots of rye spice that pairs well with the heat from the proof. More of the roasted peanuts from the nose and a nice damp earth/oakiness that I belief is from the rye. Finish is surprisingly short, almost no burn but a heavy amount of dry oak/earthy aftertaste, that I actually kind of enjoy. There’s also an almost bitter note that is different from the normal oak tannins. Kind of an herbal, minty bitterness.
With that in mind, does this sound at all similar to the KC Bourbon X Rye? As mentioned before I like high rye bourbons, and my sweet spot for proof seems to be 100-115 proof, so I can see liking this bottle at 113 proof. Appreciate any input y’all have!
I have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 8 year that I am halfway through, and I swear there has to be something going on with it. Best way I can describe it is if you were drinking besides an indoor pool at a hotel and someone splashed a bit of pool water into your glass. There’s just this chlorine-like taste that shows up and lingers on the finish and completely ruins the pour for me. I’m fairly confident that this isn’t the “Turkey Funk”, as I’ve had and enjoyed the regular 101 several times and not experienced this. Is there a possibility that I got a corked bottle? Or does the 8 year just change that funk to where it tastes way different then the regular 101? Thanks in advance for any help!
After a year and a half, I finally seem to have an idea of what I like, and noticed that the middle ground between bourbon and rye seems to be my sweet spot. Whether it’s high rye bourbons like four roses SiB, OGD 114, Smokewagon, etc, or barely legal ryes like Old Overholt. I’d also throw in ones that don’t taste like standard ryes like Sagamore Double Oaked and Jack Bonded. Anyone else in the same boat, and if so what other whiskeys have you had that scratched that itch?
Super stoked with this marketplace find! Can’t wait to take her on some trails and pour on the coal! Really looking forward to being able to do some longer rides without running out of steam. On a side note, can anyone recommend me some better grips? I keep getting splinters from the ones that come stock. Also need to find a good source for coal if anyone knows of a good place. Thanks in advance for any input!
Tried my bottle a couple times now, and I consistently get an almost chlorine like taste on the back end unlike anything I’m used to on the standard 101. Like the smell when you walk into a pool supply store, a plastic/vinyl and chlorine chemical kind of smell. Not overwhelming, but definitely there. It is sort of like the standard 101 funk, but it went bad or something. Anyone else have a similar experience?
Just killed the first bottle of bourbon I ever bought, four roses SiB (OBSV 100 proof) over a year later. Given that it had a pour and a half left, oxidation had run its course, and it was not quite as good as I remembered. A but weak/watery tasting. I followed it up with a pour of SBS, which reminded me of everything I love about four roses stuff. I have blinded these two against each other in the past, and came to the conclusion that the SBS was more refined/richer, and the SiB more complex/spicy. For the price, I preferred the SiB. That being said, with the recent releases of the other SiB recipes OESO, OESK, OBSF (2025) and OESQ, OESF, and OBSK (2026, have not seen the last three locally yet) alongside the standard OBSV, what do y’all prefer between any of the 100 proof SiBs vs the SBS?
(Due to my current financial situation, the barrel strength SiBs and limited edition bottles are for future me that makes six figures to enjoy, lol. Don’t mind hearing about them though if they left a good impression/are worth keeping in mind for future prosperity)
Just hoping to get some input on what (Old) Overholt ryes y’all have found to be decent for sipping neat? Kind of hoping to stay sub $60, but still curious about how well liked the more expensive bottles are. As a big fan of the movie Tombstone and Val Kilmer’s portrayal of the famous Doc Holliday, I thought it would be fun to add a bottle to my collection that he reportedly drank. As far as I understand, the more budget bottles are a big departure from the original Rye mashbill that would have been around at the time, but examples like the bonded or 114 are decent if found for a good price. For a bit more money the newer A. Overholt Monongahela mash can be had, and from what I hear pays homage to what the original mashbill and taste would have been in its glory days. Bottles like the 11 and 12 year sound like they are pretty solid, but priced a bit over my head for my current financial situation. Maybe one day though! Anyways, I guess I’m just looking for any favorite bottles, thoughts, or interesting tid bits of info not commonly known about the brand. Thanks in advance for any input!

I don’t know if this post is allowed, but it needs to be said. u/Quirky_Salad_6870 made a post with the attached picture showing their impressive collection of Jack Daniel’s bottles. As far as I know, their first post in here. Within the first hour, users who will not be named (though they ought to be) posted the following comments aimed at the OP. Now I understand the sentiment, it can be frustrating seeing a bottle you would love to try being used as a display piece. But at the end of the day, they still had to hunt for those bottles same as anyone else. I don’t like it, understand it, or agree with it, but that’s not a reason to get nasty with other users on here. I’d also like to point out that instead of asking if maybe the OP had bought duplicates to taste that were not shown in their display case, y’all jumped to conclusions and insults, leading to them taking post down. That being said, I would like to extend an apology to u/Quirky_Salad_6870 for the behavior of the other members and their comments. This sub is supposed to be a positive place to get to share information, ask questions, and in some cases show off the collection, opened bottles or no. End rant. Delete if necessary.
