Refinished my Glenfield 30A stock and fore grip

Love the old Glenfield guns, decided to see if I could spruce up the wood a little bit on my 30A. Here’s how it came out. Pretty happy with it! Edit for clarification: this was done by removing the old finish with citri-strip. Treated with bar keepers friend mixed into water to form a paste to get rid of some deeper stains in the wood. Dyed with Fiebings dark brown leather dye to where I was happy with the color. Used a mini torch by hand to toast some tiger stripes into the wood. Definitely recommend practicing on a test piece beforehand! Finished with several coats of Tru-oil followed by a few coats of paste wax. Took the opportunity with it off the gun to get the fitment a little bit tighter.

Faux patina/aged steel with VHT wheel paint

Had this old single six that needed some fresh paint on the ejector rod housing. Decided to see how well I could match the rest of the guns patina using easy to find rattle can paints. Ended up with VHT wheel paint in matte black, graphite, gold, and gloss clear. After scuffing and degreasing I used a light coat of the matte black as a base, followed by dusted on coats of the graphite and then gold. Used worn out maroon scotch brite to lightly buff back the majority of the metallic flakes leaving only the finer particles behind. Repeated another dusty coat of graphite, black, and then gold followed by rubbing it back once more with the scotch Brite before I was happy with the look. Used the scotch Brite to burn through on the high-wear areas to mimic natural wear. Applied a single wet coat of the gloss clear and then buffed it back to a a satin finish with the scotch Brite. Pretty happy with the results I got, grip frame is next. Only thing I’d do differently is watch the scotch Brite on edges you don’t want to burn through, got a little sloppy and went through in a small spot on the edge that meets up parallel with the barrel. Other thing I might do is more coats of the metallic but buff it back further so you build up a layer of only the finer metallic particles. I feel like that’s my only gripe is that it’s a little too glittery. Will see if more lighter coats buffed back more makes a difference on the grip frame. Hope this helps someone!

State of the selection. Thoughts, questions?

Only one missing is OGD 114, will be done for a long time after I replace that. Pretty much reached a point where I know exactly what I like and now it’s just a matter of thinning the herd and just replacing my favorites as needed. It’s been fun hunting, but my whole goal was to figure out what I like so that I could pick a handful to keep in stock and I think I’ve achieved that. Will not be replacing Makers 46, High West Double Rye or Rendezvous, Early Times BiB, Sagamore Double Oaked, or Smokewagon. I may look for the 7 year 2 month version of the MM CS as I’m a little let down by the 3 month one. Let me know if y’all have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer!

Finally beat this old bastard!

Hi guys! Long time lurker here, this is my first post. I got into picking loosely after seeing some of LPL’s videos years ago. Bought a cheap no-name set of picks from a gun show, begged some old locks off my dad, and have been on and off picking as a way to relax ever since. I also just enjoy mechanics and understanding mechanisms and such. Anyway, this bad boy was from my dad’s garage, and for 3 years it has kicked my ass. Mind you, I don’t practice a whole lot, every few months I get the itch and pull out my zip-lock bag of locks and fiddle with them. Have a few cheapos that I learned on that I can usually get open in a minute or two. But this one just wouldn’t open. It actually is finicky even with the key, so might be something going on beyond me being not that good at it lol. Anywho, I pulled it out tonight and started messing with it. Lo and behold, I popped it not once, but four times! I don’t know what I did different but for some reason this time just felt like I could actually feel the pins binding and setting, and was actually picking and not just fiddling around blindly. Either way, I’m kind of ecstatic. I now want to start looking at upgrading my pick set and getting some more locks! On another note, has anyone else had a lot of experience on these old Masterlock No. 15s, and are there any known quirks or tricks regarding them? This one seems like the number one pin has almost no spring tension on it, I have to turn it upside down and smack it to reset it if I go too far with it. Thanks for any input!

Lunch break find

Excited to finally try this after hearing so much about it! As a big fan of barely legal ryes I have a feeling this one will be a favorite.

First group tasting

Had my first group tasting at my neighbors house, fun night! Favorite pours were the High West Rendezvous Rye batch 20E16, and Bookers “Off your rocker” from 2016 which was PHENOMENAL. Should have done some reading on High Wests changes because I’m now the proud owner of a current production bottle of Rendezvous Rye that is a complete disappointment compared to the bottle I got to taste. Lesson learned I guess! Also re-tasted Old Forester 1920 and confirmed that it’s still one of my favorite pours. That Bookers though… man I could have nosed that glass all night. Also the highest proof pour I’ve had to date at 129.7 proof!

Trying new stuff

I’m at a point where I pretty much know my likes and dislikes, and can usually pick a new bottle to try based off of that and have good luck. That being said, how often do y’all stray from your comfort zones to try new stuff that deviates from your typical tasting preferences? I’m on the fence about getting Pikesville Rye or High West Campfire (on sale for $55 which is the lowest I’ve seen). On one hand I almost guarantee I’d enjoy Pikesville based off of what I like. On the other hand, I have tried Campfire, and while it’s not my favorite, I did find it an interesting pour. I feel like it would be nice to have something different from my normal preferences to sort of mix things up a little.

Question, Smooth Ambler Old Scout label difference?

Hi, was hoping someone could tell me what (if any) the difference between these two bottles is? When looking at them in person, they both appear to be NAS, same proof, straight bourbons. But the first one is significantly cheaper, at $35 whereas the second one is anywhere from $49-$69 at different local stores. I have tried researching to see if they changed the labels at any point, but only seem to come up with the age stated bottles that ended in 2016, and the NAS bottles that started back up in 2019, which look like the second picture. I’m sure I’m missing something stupid here, but I’d really appreciate any info I can get. Also, the reason I am interested in this is because I am looking for bottles with similar mashbills and flavors to Four Roses SiB, and Old Scout is almost identical in regards to mashbills. That being said, I think the flavors I’m looking for were probably in their pre-2016 age stated bottles. Can anybody who has had both confirm this? Thanks!

Double bottle kill

Is it bad that I drank the last of the OGD 114 straight from the bottle? Happy early 4th everyone!

Paint matching to weathered metal?

Have an old beat up Ruger single six that I’m tinkering on. Bluing is in pretty rough shape, some putting on the barrel, a few dings here and there, nothing crazy, but definitely seen some years. I actually really like the way it looks, so what I’m thinking of trying is matching the aluminum ejector rod housing and grip frame to the rest of the gun. Ideally I’d use Cerakote, but I’m not currently setup to do it and honestly not a huge deal if I use rattle can stuff. I’m thinking I can maybe use Alumahyde or maybe like VHT header paint in Black, brown and silver, and layer them in thin coats to mimic the looks of the browned steel. Maybe use a sponge here and there for the mottled areas, don’t have all the details figured out yet. Has anybody done something similar, and if so what did you use and how did you apply it?

Sunday bottle kill

It’s been fun. For me this is one of those bottles I will probably replace, but due to the price and having enough options at home to keep me happy for a while, it may be sometime before I buy it again. Had some ups and downs with how much I enjoyed this bottle, some days it was spicy cough syrup that left my mouth dry, others were chocolate dipped cherries with nice tobacco on the finish. When it was good, it was GOOD. But for whatever reason that experience was just inconsistent for me. Anyway, enough rambling. Cheers, and happy Sunday to everybody!

Tick ID help (repost with slightly better pictures)

Found and removed this tick that bit my daughter. We are located in North East Florida. Any idea what type it is, and if we should be worried? Thanks for any help!

Help ID’ing tick

My wife pulled this off my daughter this evening. We live in North Florida. Any ideas what type it is and if we should be worried? Was small, like the size of the head of a sewing needle. Thanks in advance!

Blend experiment, and question regarding Knob Creek Bourbon X Rye

Was bored and was thinking about whether or not I want to try KC Bourbon X Rye. Decided to experiment and make my own blend to get an idea of whether I’d like it or not. I like high rye bourbons and barely legal ryes so figured there’s a good chance I’d like it. Anyhow, the closest options I have to make this blend were Knob Creek Reserve and Old Overholt 114 (it’s rye, and it’s Beam, figured that’s as close as I can get even though the proof is a tad higher). Blended them in my glen by eye to roughly the 30/70 bourbon rye mixture used in KC BxR and added two drops of filtered water to bring down the proof. Results? Pretty damn good. The already hot nose of the KC Reserve gets a boost from the rye, and grabs your attention with aggressive cinnamon, honey, and allspice. Roasted peanuts, oak, and a bit of dill are in the background. Palate is sweeter than I remember the KC Reserve, in a really nice way. Glad I added the water, as it’s still got some nice heat to it. Lots of rye spice that pairs well with the heat from the proof. More of the roasted peanuts from the nose and a nice damp earth/oakiness that I belief is from the rye. Finish is surprisingly short, almost no burn but a heavy amount of dry oak/earthy aftertaste, that I actually kind of enjoy. There’s also an almost bitter note that is different from the normal oak tannins. Kind of an herbal, minty bitterness.

With that in mind, does this sound at all similar to the KC Bourbon X Rye? As mentioned before I like high rye bourbons, and my sweet spot for proof seems to be 100-115 proof, so I can see liking this bottle at 113 proof. Appreciate any input y’all have!

What does corked Wild Turkey 101 taste like?

I have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 8 year that I am halfway through, and I swear there has to be something going on with it. Best way I can describe it is if you were drinking besides an indoor pool at a hotel and someone splashed a bit of pool water into your glass. There’s just this chlorine-like taste that shows up and lingers on the finish and completely ruins the pour for me. I’m fairly confident that this isn’t the “Turkey Funk”, as I’ve had and enjoyed the regular 101 several times and not experienced this. Is there a possibility that I got a corked bottle? Or does the 8 year just change that funk to where it tastes way different then the regular 101? Thanks in advance for any help!

Anyone else’s sweet spot high rye bourbons and barely legal ryes?

After a year and a half, I finally seem to have an idea of what I like, and noticed that the middle ground between bourbon and rye seems to be my sweet spot. Whether it’s high rye bourbons like four roses SiB, OGD 114, Smokewagon, etc, or barely legal ryes like Old Overholt. I’d also throw in ones that don’t taste like standard ryes like Sagamore Double Oaked and Jack Bonded. Anyone else in the same boat, and if so what other whiskeys have you had that scratched that itch?

What do y’all think of my new S-MTB? (Steam-assisted Mountain Bike)

Super stoked with this marketplace find! Can’t wait to take her on some trails and pour on the coal! Really looking forward to being able to do some longer rides without running out of steam. On a side note, can anyone recommend me some better grips? I keep getting splinters from the ones that come stock. Also need to find a good source for coal if anyone knows of a good place. Thanks in advance for any input!

Damn it. Missed the Sagamore Cask Strength boat…

Lesson I learned today: When you’ve got a good price on something, don’t expect it to be there in a week. Kicking myself on this one. 1st pic was a few weeks ago. 2nd pic was when I came back today.
