Spindle or latch mechanism failure? Not a cylinder / lockout problem.
Apologies in advance, I may not be using the correct terminology.
Interior door to the attic somehow got locked (or so we initially thought,) and we could not gain access to the attic. I believe this is a Kwikset Halifax exterior model, it has the pinhole on the side that allows us to pop off the handle.
In troubleshooting, I popped off the handle and removed the cylinder, no problem. Without the cylinder in play, I was still unable to get the latching mechanism to move. I can twist the brass handle that the door knob attaches to, but for some reason, the latch is not budging. I’m guessing something internal (spindle?) is broken or disengaged.
I tested the same actions on our front and back exterior doors, and they behaved as I expected. Twisting the brass innards allowed the latch mechanism to retract. For some reason, our attic door with the same door knob, is malfunctioning.
I tried a latch, slip tool to no avail, I think the deadlatch is keeping me from doing that, which makes sense.
Is my only remedy at this point to drill out the latch bolt? Am I way off-base in what I’m trying?
