English WotC Black Star Japanese Promos

Hi everyone!

EDIT: All side-by-side photos depict the special version on the right side.

I wanted to share a new collection I've recently completed over the past 6 months or so. These are all of the Japanese black star promo variants released in English from back in the Wizards of the Coast era. I'll go into detail on each one and how to differentiate them below.

All of these cards are made from Japanese cardstock, which means they are slightly thinner and have a different card core pattern to them. The Japanese cards have a smaller and more even core pattern while English has bigger blotches and/or linear streaks through them. They are also just a touch different in color, with a whiter area around the art and inside the yellow border. I will provide images of the Japanese vs English cores as well as the color comparisons for people who are interested in taking a closer look. I have also heard that that a blacklight can help distinguish between the Japanese and English cardstock, but I don't have any experience or a blacklight to verify, currently.

Several of these cards are incredibly hard to tell from their English-printed counterparts; even in-person. This includes the CD Promo Pikachu, the Stamp Rally Mewtwo, the Kanzenban WB Stamp Mewtwo, and the Gotta Comic Glossy Mew. The Meowth and Eevee are easy to tell as they are non-holographic while their English-printed counterparts are holographic. The Grey Stamp Pikachu and Jigglypuff are also pretty easy to tell, but I will include a side-by-side photo for comparison.

Here they are laid out as followed; left to right and top to bottom:

1. JR Stamp Meowth - This card along with the Eevee and the Mewtwo in the middle of the image are from the JR Stamp Rally in Japan. You had to complete a booklet in Japan with multiple stamps to get them. I managed to find a complete stamp booklet with my Meowth listing, and will attach a picture of it as well. I thought it was a really cool piece of history to have. Again, this is a non-holo variant compared to the holo English-printed run.

2. JR Stamp Eevee - This card along with the Meowth and the Mewtwo in the middle of the image are from the JR Stamp Rally in Japan. You had to complete a stamp booklet with multiple stamps to get them. This is card is also non-holo and easy to differentiate from the holo English-printed version.

3. Grey Stamp Jigglypuff - This card is very glossy like the Grey Stamp Pikachu and the Gotta Comic Mew. It came out with the Grey Stamp Pikachu in the March 1999 edition of Hyper Corocoro Magazine in Japan. If one didn't know better, the Japanese glossy promos feel very fake compared to other cards, so be careful!

4. Kanzenban WB Stamp Mewtwo - This was by far the hardest card to find. It is incredibly rare and I gambled on 3 different regular WB Stamp listings on Ebay before finding the actual Kanzenban version. It was released in the Mewtwo Strikes Back VHS advertised as the "American Version" in Japan. It is almost impossible to find them on Ebay as most people don't know about them. I was lucky enough that someone knew what they had and included it in the listing. Another tip for people would be to check out Mercari Japan or Yahoo Auctions Japan to look for this card.

5. JR Stamp Mewtwo - This is the only JR Stamp without a holo counterpart. It is incredibly hard to differentiate it from the English-printed version. The only real ways I have found to verify this card are the lighter hue to the purple around the art and the Japanese core pattern. This was also available from the JR Stamp Rally in Japan with the Eevee and Meowth.

6. Gotta Comic Glossy Mew - This card was released in the May 2000 edition of the Japanese Gotta Comic. It is very glossy just like the Grey Stamp Pikachu and Jigglypuff. If one didn't know better, the Japanese glossy promos feel very fake compared to other cards, so be careful!

7. CD Promo Pikachu - This card was released in the The Pokémon Song Best Collection music album in January 1999. The only ways I have found to verify it are the lighter coloring and the Japanese core. I have found several of these at card shows and card shops and the vendors had no idea. Keep an eye out!

8. Grey Stamp Pikachu - This card is very glossy like the Grey Stamp Jigglypuff and the Gotta Comic Mew. It was released alongside the Grey Stamp Jigglypuff in the March 1999 edition of Hyper Corocoro Magazine in Japan. If one didn't know better, the Japanese glossy promos feel very fake compared to other cards, so be careful!

Please let me know your thoughts! I am happy to help people with any questions they may have, and may be able to help track down some as well.

Happy Hunting!

The infamous “Smoking Charmander”

Hey there! Just wanted to show my latest addition to my Controversial/Banned Pokemon TCG collection (you can find it here https://www.reddit.com/r/WotCPokemonCards/s/Cx2Bn9llMm): Charmander from Coro Coro Tora Karuta mini set released in 1997. Really unique piece and also really controversial concept as far it concerned a kids hobby that was in its first phases of being. Would you consider grading it to certify its authenticity? Have a great day and thank you for reading!

Sharing my (US) Fossil Grandmaster Set

Just wanted to share the scans of my Fossil (US) Grandmaster Set. I define this as all 1st Edition and Unlimited cards as well as the "additional cards" listed on Bulbapedia: Prerelease Aerodactyl (both versions), W stamp Kabuto, and US-released 1999-2000 prints. I also have a corrected Zapdos.

A quick note on scope:

Errors: I don't include error variants in my sets, so I don't have the 1st Edition "Stain/Smudge" Haunter, "Cigar Stain" Hitmonlee, or the "Slash" Krabby. I do hope to add them at some point.

US vs. International: This is strictly a US Grandmaster set. I don’t include the 1999–2000 Australian 3rd print run due to how scarce and expensive those have become, but I remain on the lookout.

Impossible Cards: Bulbapedia also lists the WotC employee exclusive cosmos holos, but these will be impossible for me to collect.

I've also included scans of the opened 1st edition pack wrappers I've collected for this set (Lapras, Aerodactyl, and Zapdos art).

I got back into collecting in January 2024 when I went home to my parents' and found these buried in my room. The core set was mostly completed during my childhood, minus the promos/additional cards which I've picked up since. Most of these cards were originally pulled by me, went straight into penny sleeves and toploaders, and remain in NM/pack-fresh condition. All cards are currently double-sleeved in sealable perfect fits and clear standard sleeves, housed in fresh toploaders, and stored in an Arkhive.

I also have master sets for Base Set Unlimited, Jungle (grandmaster), Team Rocket Unlimited, Gym Heroes Unlimited, and all of the Neo sets that I retrieved from my parents' house over subsequent visits. I’ll keep posting them as I get everything scanned.

More info on fossil: https://sleevenocardbehind.com/pokemon-fossil-set-everything-you-need-to-know/

Just thought I'd share and I hope you enjoy! :)

Weird Aquapolis and Skyridge phenomenon: 'common' (circle) rarity E-reader reverse-holos are more expensive than 'rare' (star) reverse-holos. Why is this?

I've been really into reverse holos from Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge lately and have noticed a strange phenomenon. I'm not sure if this applies to Expedition as much, but Aquapolis and Skyridge reverse holos that are 'common' rarity are much more difficult to find and expensive than reverse-holo 'rare' (star) cards. This is incredibly odd to me, a circle rarity being worth much more than a star rarity?

For instance, Natu and Xatu reverse holos from Skyridge: there are a dozen or more reverse holo Xatu's on Ebay right now (for North America), yet only 5 copies of Natu (four bgs graded 8.5 and above and a PSA, no raws).

Last Natu PSA 10 sale = $1160

Last Xatu PSA 10 sale = $750

Another example is Aquapolis Oddish reverse vs Vileplume reverse-holos

On ebay in North America there are only two copies of Oddish (a raw and a psa9). Psa 9 selling for $216. However there are 13 Vileplumes available, with a psa 9 going for $144

Pricecharting says:

PSA 10 reverse holo Oddish = $1184

PSA 10 reverse Vileplume = $626

These are only two examples but I've seen this with most common rarity Aquapolis and Skyridge reverse-holos. Does anyone have an explanation as to why the circle 'common' rarity reverse-holo ereaders are so much more rare than a star symbol 'rare' reverse-holo? I thought collecting vintage Oddish cards would be cheap, and it was until these reverse-holo 😅

Need some ideas for interesting or neat error/misprints or rare esoteric cards

I am putting together a twitch plays Pokémon themed binder, featuring a page for each team member and then pages depicting lore bits

I want to feature an error card or a really niche card you don't see often for each one

I have the no symbol error pidgeot

I will have the no symbol error venomoth

I haven't found any good errors of Omastar but I'm new (returning) to looking for the really niche stuff, maybe theres a weird one off card of him

There's the holo box error Zapdos, but there's also the WotC employee only Zapdos that seems fascinating except I can't tell how to identify that one from a regular fossil holo

Nidoking I am not sure about, I though about just picking up a well loved first edition

Lapras there's a couple holo errors but I don't know if the missing stars or the holo box is more interesting to one in the know

Any ideas for really out there or deep-cut cards are cool, you guys seem like the place to ask, appreciate it in advance!

Time to finally grade some of the childhood collection

My dad owned a shop and I used to play regionals and what not around Neo era until yugioh stole my attention and my collection sat in my families old storage unit while I traveled and grinded that out, about 5 months ago I dug all of it out and since then I’ve been ebaying/vending and moving a bunch of the low-mid stuff to fund grading all this, finally time to start sending some so figured I’d share 😎 going to wait for a solid in person event for some of these for sure

Got around to organizing my childhood collection

Don't know much about the rarety of the cards but decided to use some of my leftover MTG binders to organzie them by set. Surprisingly I had a complete shadowless set which is cool. Regardless, I thought this sub might like to see what I organized. I am missing 20 cards total between gym hero and gym challenge and a few other random ones. I am wondering if it would be worth completing the missing cards

My entire 1st edition slab collection

Just want to share my collection that I’m passionate about. Not the highest grades on all of them, but I feel extremely lucky and I have a personal connection to every one of these. I hope you all have a wonderful day

Finally taking my childhood collection out to grade

I just started taking come of my old cards out. These are just a small handful that I’m trying to figure out their values. I would assume the Lugia is one of the top.
