How is the length of a screw/bolt decided?

Good afternoon. Let us say that two pieces of metal are bolted together. Two parts to the question:

  1. I would imagine the only part of the bolt that is under tension would be between the head of the bolt and the nut. Is this correct? Thus, the part of the threads beyond the nut are just…present, not actually doing anything and have no forces on them.
  2. How is the length decided? As long as the bolt can sufficiently pass through all materials and have at least one thread (arbitrary?) beyond the end of the nut, wouldn’t that have the same outcome as 30+ extra threads?

Thank you for your input!

How do I know? Ceiling fan box

I was under the impression that this is just a light fixture box. I called an electrician and he said it is ceiling fan rated already and only required install of the fan. Is that true..? We have a fan in the next room over and doubt that the box is any different.

Shower head

How can I remove this shower head from the pipe? Does it twist off? There is a pin hole leak at the connection that was covered with tape.

Genuinely confused

So we have some projects we want to do like redo ceiling fixtures to put fans in, hang curtains, shelves, etc. the list goes on. Do we just test a single wall and assume all walls are the same? Test a wall and a ceiling? Test each prospective wall?

I am confused! Thank you!

🙄 Starting to hate this house

I have moved on to my next project - installing ceiling fans because there is only one in the entire house. Do I need to be concerned about this ceiling? I have to change the box so anticipate having to increase the hole size because it looks tiny. 50s east coast house.

Wall fixtures?

Hello! We are on east coast 1950s brick house. Every wall we have tried to put a nail/screw/monkey hook has been met with some sort of stone or plaster or something.

Two questions:

  1. If it is plaster, I read that it often has asbestos in it. Would we test every single wall that we want to hang a shelf or put up a picture..? This seems impractical.
  2. If it is plaster, how do we mount shelves? All past homes have had drywall and we would just pop an anchor in. Surely people mount things in old houses…! I ran a magnet around a wall and there are definitely lines of screws. Not sure how a plaster wall is made or what the underlying structure is like.

Perhaps I am overanalyzing the entire situation.
Thank you!

Wall fixture question

Hello! We are on east coast 1950s brick house. Every wall we have tried to put a nail/screw/monkey hook has been met with some sort of stone or plaster or something.

The question is: do we test every single wall? There’s no way that is the move. And there’s no way that everyone that has an old brick house does that. How are you supposed to mount drapes? Shelves? Etc. Are we just overanalyzing the situation?

Thank you!

Post-cabinet backsplash

Hello all. I recently redid my cabinets and, due to a combination of an ancient house with non-perpendicular walls and odd flooring situation, there is a gap behind the granite backsplash. I’ve considered lots of options including replacing with subway tiles, filling with caulk, removing the backsplash and scooting it back to the wall, or removing it, moving the corner piece, and having the other wall pieces refabricated to fit.

I would really like to just remove it and move it back toward the wall but the geometry of the rounded edge makes me think that isn’t possible. Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to fix this issue without moving the actual countertop itself/cabinets? The gap at its largest is about 1 1/16”.

Thank you!

Cabinet Reno and came to this

Brick house from the 50s (this is against an exterior wall). Didn’t notice until after the old cabinets were removed. A past owner had already chiseled some of it away in addition to myself when placing new cabinets.

Should I be concerned or is it just concrete/cement?

Thank you!

How to fix gap above cabinets?

Hello all. I recently did my first major DIY. I removed and installed new cabinets. There were some challenges along the way but overcame most of them. Now that it's done, I have some follow up challenges.

The first is above the wall cabinets there is this issue.
Previously it was covered by a trim piece but the new cabinet doors fill more space and I can't put a large trim piece. It's 1.25" along almost the entire thing but one area (on corner cabinet) is 1.5". I considered:

  1. Trying to fill with mud
  2. Trying to put some sort of drywall repair
  3. Finding a thin piece of trim for just the bottom portion But not sure how I'd fully execute any of these options.

Any tips? Thank you!!

Earthen leveling. What am I missing?

I decided to give the sky riding leveling method a shot. Watched videos and read all about the addon. When I get to the locations, probably 70% of the ones in first segment I had to fly around a bunch or would do figure 8s over and over (after about five or six I would just skip and move on). Then got to silvermoon second segment and not a single location granted xp despite how hard I tried. I even spam W.

What am I missing? So far 10-25 has taken an hour. People were getting much farther in that time…This is not stress free! Thank you for the help!

EDIT: For anyone looking in the future for tips… using A and D instead of W for spam worked perfectly. Just leveled my first Earthen up in 2.5 hours. Thank you everyone!

Hello all. I am trying to decide what the next card should be. I already have Chase Freedom Unlimited (CFU), Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR), and AmEx Platinum. What would be the next card I should add to the repertoire? Currently, I try to maximize all the perks from each card and use the CFU for daily purchases. Maybe another plat for double perks?

Thanks!

Hello all. I have never had a house with real hardwood floors. We just purchased our first house and it has them (from 1950s!). I’ve done a ton of research and I think I’ve decided I want to screen and coat before we start moving furniture in. This is my proposed list. Any recommended changes or additions to technique or materials? Anything I’m missing?

  1. Scrub an area with mineral spirits to check for yellow/brown substance indicating wax. If none, go to step 2
  2. Vacuum, clean floors with Bona hardwood cleaner
  3. Make sure no repairs are needed
  4. Screen with 120 grit screen
  5. Vacuum, microfiber cloth, vacuum again
  6. Apply water based polyurethane per manufacturer (was considering Bona but it seems more challenging to find locally. Is big box store bought PU actually bad..?)

Thank you!
