Papers that confirm examinations as a good assessment tool?

Hi all-given that I now have to justify having an end of course examination (rather than a bunch of take home assessments throughout the semester that AI will undoubtedly contribute to) does anyone know of any educational literature that comes out strongly in favour of using examinations as an assessment tool? Haven’t got a hope of getting it past the Dean anyway but it would be nice to be able to quote from the literature at least. Thanks.
