Am I tweaking or is katy lied a top 4 steely dan album?
I’d say Aja, Gaucho, The Royal Scam and Katy Lied
Ps: who is Katie and why did she lie?

10- Reserved for only their absolute best songs, ones that are on daily rotation
8,9- Also among their best, songs that display something that is memorable and worth revisiting
6,7- Decent to good, songs that are not as played as their ultimate best but are still ones that you revisit
5- okay, not bad but not ones you come back to often
3,4- Mediocre to meh, songs that you don't play often but don't go out of your way to skip
2- skippable, not good at all
1- vomit-inducing (think: what were they on when they made this?!)
0- makes you want to commit seppuku
Let's continue with the fifth song off their third album, Pretzel Logic, a cover of the Duke Ellington and Bubber Miley tune titled East St. Louis Toodle-Oo.

This is so strange but so reoccurring that I refuse to believe that this is a coincidence. I'm the type of person that has certain periods where they only listen to a single genre. So sometimes my playlist is dominated by hard rock, other times its dominated by smooth jazz. Around two years ago, my friend introduced me to Steely Dan through the album Gaucho and I was immediately hooked. I actually became a decent enough fan of them, I had a lot of late-era Steely Dan on my playlist at the time as I was generally listening to a lot of jazz rock and yacht rock at the time. Not-so-coincidentally, during this period of my life, things were going extremely good. I was in a happy relationship, had a good-paying job, made lots of new friends, etc.
But this changed when that phased sort of passed, and my music taste started shifting towards chamber jazz and post-rock (late-era Talk Talk), and my life started going to shit. My incredible manager at my job quit and was replaced by a total asshat and poor communication in my relationship led to a lot of arguments. And the less I listened to Steely Dan (i'd ocassionaly put them on), the more insufferable my life became.
This is the part where i don't think it's a coincidence. I remember going through my old playlists, and remembered Gaucho. I put it on, remembered how good it was, and listened to it often on my way to work. And again, not-so-coincidentally, my relationship improved, and my manager became less of a dick. This basically happens every time I don't listen to Steely Dan.
I know it sounds ridiculous but this is a genuine post. Is there something with their music that just improves you cognitively? Does the hertz of the music somehow flood my brain with serotonin? Honestly don't know what to do. Gaucho is amazing tho.
Hey all --
I recently bought Brian Sweet's "Reelin in the Years" on a whim. I'm seeing a ton of gripes about the book online, mostly citing its inaccuracies. Its a pretty dense book ...
For anyone that's read it, is it worth it, or should I look to something else for the history?
Thanks

Hey guys, I always think about movie scenes when listening steely dan, and the ones that often comes to my mind are Pulp fiction and Scarface. Which ones would be a good fit for Steely Dan songs ?

You can picture Fagen and Becker sitting on the bus going to Bard, pointing to the sign and saying "that's a song right there." Full cover of "Barrytown" here.
