Cam chain question

77 xs650, bought it "almost done, just needs wiring". If you can believe it, it did not just need wiring. My timing is 90 degrees off at TDC, which I found out after a backfire blew one of my carbs off. Do I have to completely pull the motor, or is it possible to get the top off while it's still in the frame?

Shifting/clutch mystery

Bought a 77 XS650, dude said it's a project that he's just not interested in finishing as he's had other stuff going on. The engine is good, it just needed wired and the carbs reattached. When I bought it, I compression tested it made sure it cycled through all the gears, and the kick start was engaging - everything was working fine. The clutch cable was not connected at the time, so I didn't get a chance to test it. I've been working on it over the last couple weekends and today I hit a snag.

I pulled the cover off and attached the clutch cable. It's got forward controls, and I didn't realize I had set the linkage at the wrong angle, so I ended up pulling the shifter off the shift shaft a good few times before I found the right angle. It now won't shift, and feels like it's stuck between gears. I've tried just about everything I can think of, like rocking it back and forth a good bit, shifting with and without the clutch, etc. I tried the kicker and it lurched forward even with the clutch in, so I jacked the back up and tried again, the wheel fully spins like the clutch is not engaging. The clutch adjuster nut and screw are both not moving on the threads, but it moves in and pulls the lever toward the bars when I try to turn it. The clutch lever is engaging and doesn't feel particularly weird, and with the adjuster cover off I can see it moving in and out when I pull it.

Can anyone give me an idea of what's going on or point me in the right direction? I just filled it with fresh oil and don't currently have a clean pan, so I'm not gonna pull the other side until I run to the parts store tomorrow after work. Earlier today it was shifting, it wasn't until I pulled the cover off to attach the chain that it started acting up. If it's worth mentioning, the shift shaft also moves about a half inch in and out if I pull/push on it without the shifter attached.

Sorry for the really long post, but I'm trying to give as much relevant info as possible,

[TOMT][powerpoint?] Terrible presentation about Toucans

It was probably like 10 years ago that I saw it, and I have no idea how, but it was on the greater internet and not something someone showed me that they had made. It was a powerpoint-ish presentation about Toucans, and it was super poorly written. The only thing I remember is "my favorite bird is the toucan bird". Maybe I was just high, but I laughed so hard I cried.

Sportster regulator and antigravity battery

Just about finished with my Sportster chop, but I hit a snag. It's an 86, and I'm pretty sure I've got the stock voltage regulator. There's a warning in my antigravity box about not using pre-90s voltage regulators, something about an overcharge/fire risk. If I had to choose, I'd rather not burn to death.

Anybody have any experience replacing an older voltage regulator with something newer? Any recommendations on what to choose? None of the ones I saw at a glance had the same cables, I've got a 2-pronged plug and 2 round connectors, I don't want to grab something that's not gonna work.

Big bore kits?

I'm picking up a 77 XS650 here pretty soon. It's my first one, I haven't worked on these before but from what I've read they're not much hassle to work on. While looking around at mods and performance upgrades, I found a big bore conversion kit making some pretty big claims about performance. I put one on my 86 Sportster without much issue, and this looks like an easier weekend project all things considered. Do any of you have any experience with these and how big of a performance improvement is it going up 100cc? I'm looking for realistic, ordinary examples of how it feels and if it caused issues down the line. I intend to leave the engine pretty much stock for a minute, but considering it for like a winter project or when I accidentally go more than 10 minutes without converting my garage to a scrapyard.

I'm in Galesburg for work until Saturday afternoon, and I'd like to get up to something Friday night. I've heard Galesburg has some sick bands, does anybody know of anything going on Friday? I'm primarily interested in punk, hardcore, and grind, but I'm down for whatever. I don't drink, so I don't really want to go hang my head in a bar all night either. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
