Women who are planning to earn a doctoral level degree, did you change your last name?

I got married a couple weeks ago, but I never decided whether or not to change my name (and if so, to what). I’ve been thinking about this since we got engaged. I’m having a really hard time deciding, so I’d love other experiences and ideas!

  1. I’m applying to medical school, so I hope to be Dr. xxx. I’d like to be Dr. mylastname, but I think I’d run into licensing issues if I took my husbands last name. I’m not 100% attached to this though.
  2. I was initially thinking about adding his last name in front of mine, but I’d been thinking more recently about completely getting rid of mine or moving it with my middle name.
  3. His last name is long and mine is short. His last name also has a cultural significance, and is hard to pronounce.
  4. I really like the idea of having the same last name for family unity if we have kids and even for the two of us. We’ve always felt like our own little team, and I feel like sharing a name would make that even more tangible.
  5. We ran into some big issues with his parents the day before our wedding that make me feel like I’m not accepted. I don’t know if having their name is something I’m 100% happy with.
  6. I’m the last person in my tiny family with my last name. My mom gave me her middle and last name, so I’d probably keep my middle name going if we have kids.
  7. I don’t think I want to socially go by a name that’s not my legal name, but I’m not 100% on that either.

Any advice or other peoples experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: does anyone happen to know if I add his last name before mine if going by just my maiden name professionally would cause issues with licensing?

It would legally be hislastname mylastname, but go by Dr. mylastname.

How to make this aquarium look better?

This is a 10 gallon with 8 live bearers and 14 neocaridina shrimp. I have a separate 5 gallon shrimp tank that looks way better but has more plants.

Does it need more plants? Less light? Do I scrape the algae or leave it for the shrimp? What kind of plants would work in this tank? The plants in this tank are not thriving, but I’m not entirely sure why.

Any advice is appreciated!! Thank you!

Anyone else’s shrimp change color over time?

Walter (I thought she was male when we got her, then she molted lol) was a dark blue when I got her. Now she has big blotches of red that are sometimes brighter and redder than other times. She’s on the left in the middle picture, but they’re in order.

Anyone else’s shrimp like this? Or know why this happens? What color might her babies be if she breeds?

Where are y’all buying your rehearsal dinner dresses?

I ordered a few from Amazon to try and they’re all see-through. My rehearsal dinner is in 3 weeks, so I don’t have a ton of time. I’d also prefer in-person shopping to try things on but I haven’t found any stores near me with white formalish dresses.

Any suggestions?

Why so the cut so bad and how do I fix it?

I’ve only played around with my machine a little bit, but it initially cut way better than this. I’m trying to make place cards, but the cut isn’t clear. I’ve only used it like three times so far, so I wouldn’t think it’s dull already. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It was the find point blade and light cardstock. I’m planning to use even thicker cardstock for the actual ones, so I think this might become an even bigger issue.

Thank you!!

How to enter schools attended when you took a class postbac there?

I finished undergrad at my university in 2023 and then I went back and took an additional class in 2025. Do I say that I attended the university from 2019-2023 or from 2019-2025?

My official transcript includes both. Do I need to submit two separate transcripts?

My shrimp has two eggs?

She had over 30 babies almost 2 weeks ago, and I noticed she has two eggs again. She may have molted in the last couple of days (the gap between her tail and abdomen is gone and I’ve picked some molts out of the tank).

Could these be leftover or a new batch? Why are there only two?

Is the white stuff on my shrimp fungus?

I just noticed this new white stuff on Larry’s rostrum. Is this fungus, a parasite, or infection?

The water pH is a bit high (7.6/8), but ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites are 0ppm.

He still grazes but hides most of the time.

Update: it moves like a worm sometimes… what do I do?

Is this a saddle already or something else?

She just became a mama shrimp about 5 days ago. Is she already forming another saddle or is something wrong?

My first shrimp babies!

They’re no more than 3 days old and I’ve counted 15 so far! My pinky (and small male) and an adult female shrimp for size reference.
