Thoughts on the Range Standardization?
A few perks in the latest update got a change to indicate trigger range by the “Close” “Medium” and “Long” range keywords and I think it’s great. I think it communicates necessary information about what a perk is trying to accomplish and also is directly showing that it’s working around other perks of its Niche.
Yet when I talked to some people about it a lot of similar points were mentioned that I don’t really understand.
The first one was that it made the perks vague and confusing by not just saying the range they work at which I can’t reply with hover over the keyword because it’s always right there and tells you exactly what the range is for the effect to trigger.
The next one is “why doesn’t medium just say ‘works within 10m’” which also perplexes me because the range of it explicitly says 6-10 meters meaning that the clear information here is that if you’re too close the effect will not trigger.
Finally the last one is that it removes the ability to fine tune range values which I can understand almost but I feel like it’s ignoring the context of what game RC is. RC is a very fast paced game where you often don’t get time to measure twice before cutting once which means that range indicators are not meant to be fine and precise. When enemies are charging towards you the question isn’t “is he medium or close?” The question is “how quick can I kill this thing and its friends?” So the distance ranges are fairly large and encompassing because they need to be able to be eyeball’d easily if you’re trying to play around one of them.
Maybe I’m crazy but being close is more of a feeling than a number that needs to be tuned down to the decimal.
