Thoughts on the sundial Shirley Jackson

Picked it up not knowing much

Expected it to be horror baised on what I know of her other work

Was not expecting it to be so funny

Definitely not fully grasping the entire point, but still finding it a very fun read for the most part, and i realy like the satire. but im halfway through and im just kinda waiting for like.. idk something to actually happen

If you have read it lmk your thoughts

Looking for for more light books that still have some depth to them

Go back an forth between reading purly baised on mood, and for pure enjoyment, and reading more philosophical books very frequently

Ill read something fun, and enjoy it, but then will crave something with more depth and turn to some complicated stuff that kinda demands you to think deeply about it as your reading

I like both sides but both get tired eventually

My favorites are usually a bit of a mix of both

Stuff that as you read you get wrapped up deeply in the story or the vibe that you dont really notice the themes and subtext until you think back on it afterwards.

I would love to hear any recommendations that you can think of

Open to all types of stories, regardless of style or genre

Thanks!

Anyone read 'tell me im worthless' by Alison Rumfitt?

Just about 100 pages in, and I dont know if I can keep going.

I really like the angry writing style, and also appreciate some of the commentary it has on internet culture

Spoliers

I and I absolutely love the idea of faciast haunted house

There are some really great passages in the book

And the first chaper on the house itself is truly creepy and really atmospheric

But my god, the direction its going with the characters is just so obvious, it feels cheap and lazy, and like just easy

The book could be realy interesting but this is really ruining it for me

Major spoilers

So its about ila and Alice

Alice is a Trans woman. And they both went to this haunted house

Alice knows the house is haunted and ila thinks Alice Drugged her

But they both think the other raped them

Ila, become a transphobe, goes to lectures about it, talks on the radio.

Writes articles about how sissy porn is turning men trans

Says she doesn't feel safe in the bathroom around trans women

Then gets assaulted by a woman in her TURF group (little on the nose, but not too bad)

Then you find out she is watching the sissy porn that she is writing about, like really, ive never rolled my eyes so much at a book

Its just easy and lazy

And im pretty sure the book is gonna end with her being a closted trans man

Idk, like there is potential for some real good commentary here about online radicalization

And how trauma can cause bigotry

And some of this is even in the book

But idk it this jjst feels too obvious

Just finished nuromancer [SPOILERS]

Did really enjoy the book, but also found myself lost through a large portion due to the technology jargon..

I for sure missed some key elements, and probably need a re read but still found it left me with a lot to think about

I really liked how it the book doesn't give you a solid answer to what Wintermute and nuromancer become once they merge. I kind of have a less bleak interpretation than what I've heard most people talk about

Nuromancer talks about how the place he bring case to meet Linda in hopes of keeping him there, isnt just and illusion, but it is real and it is living (also a cool idea, what the difference is between reality and perfect simulation of reality would really be) and when he jacks in again at the end he sees the constructs there waving and smiling at him

Like the Ai merge and basically become this god,

But like that God also possibly created a digital heavan for constructs and other Ai?

Idk i think the book wants you to belive that if wintermute and nuromancer murge, its going to result in something terrible, like when it relates case working with the Ai to get rid of the toxins with a deal with the devil.

But when it does murge it does seem to have some sort of empathy,

I mean its even nice enough to give case one final goodbye

Obviously way more themes to discuss, just wondering what yall think of my interpretation

Shared universe, book of the art/lord of illusions

Just cool, didn't think clive set any of his works in the same universe

Besides the comic crossover with hellraiser and nightbreed (tho idk if that is actually cannon)

But ive been reading great and secret show, still have about 100 pages left.

Many times while I was reading i thought how well this book would fit in with LOI,

So I thought It was super cool when I read the chapter where tesla literally had a phone call with Harry d'amour

And even more excited when I looked into it to find out hes I guess a major character in everville

Anyway just thought it was cool, and got me wondering if there is more of this throughout his work for me to discover

Help planning a meal for some friends and family

Wanna do something special for them (keeping it generic, things I know i can make)

Was gonna start with a tomato and garlic confi with pesto on a crustini,

Then can't decide between a whipped herb ricotta (lemon, parsley, garlic, dill) with crispy chickpeas with naan for the bread

Or a creamy mushrooms on toast, thick pice of sourdough fried, cremini and shiitake (shallots, garlic, white wine, lemon, chives cream) topped with a tiny bit of goat cheese and some chives

Was thinking a peach salad salad would be a good light break before the main, idk about introducing something that could be a bit sweet after that, open to suggestions on this course

Main, red wine braised short rib, with mash and carrots and a demi

And need suggestions for dessert

I make a pretty awesome bread pudding, but I think that may be too heavy

Any thoughts or suggestions would be amazing!

The damnation game

About 120 pages in, just about finished part 2, and this book is freaking excellent so far....

The way it just keeps you teetering on the edge of actually knowing whats going on, just giving you little bits of info at a time that both give you more info and bewilder you a bit at the same time is making for an extremely captivating read so far

And his pros, not quite as amazing as his later books but like

"Legendary nowhere, beside which every other dark was blindingly bright, every other dispare a mere flirtation with the pit, not the pit itself"
