I just can’t seem to understand the mechanics of it

I’m trying to learn how to do the knit stitch so I can learn how to do tapestry crochet that way. I have a chart, I have figured out what to do to make the knitting stitch but not when a stitch is made.

When do you add colors? Is it when you pull up loops? When you yarn over pull through two? When is the stitch finished, when you have only the one loop left or when you have all the loops?

I’m pretty sure a row is completed once I only have the one loop left? So I should add colors when I pull up loops. If a row calls for say white and the 4th square in the chart is red - when should I add the color? Pulling through the 3 or 4 time.

I just really wished I could ask someone irl because all the videos just make me confused.

And in the picture, have I completed two rows or two and a half?

Why does my waistcoat stitch not look like waistcoat stitch?

I am a somewhat beginner and I have a project in mind that I wanna do, but first I need to master the waistcoat stitch. But I feel like mine doesn’t look like waistcoat stitch? I’ve been looking through a lot of tutorials but still I feel like it looks off.

Appreciate help and input!

Thank you.

Need help with Nordic Hooks ”shell and a puff V stitch”

Im doing a mock up piece for a project and I wanted a nice and airy stitch with something extra and I fell for this one:

https://nordichook.com/the-shell-and-puff-v-stitch/

However when I come to the end of row 2 I’m having problems.

I have recounted my chain and stitches and row one went exactly as it should.

But row 2 should end with a single puff stitch in the last stitch - my work however wants to end with the shell part.

I’ve checked and every other one is a shell and puff so I haven’t accidentally made two of the same.

Why does mine end differently?

Looking for a similar pattern- I want the neckline and some kind of open stitch throughout but it doesn’t have to be identical.

I’ve tried to just google and check ravelry by searching for halterneck patterns or backless top patterns and I’ve also tried putting the picture through google lens - but I can’t find anything I feel resembles this. Does anyone have any advice.

Would it be terribly hard to kinda free hand it. Make the neck piece on its own and the front piece on its own. How difficult is it to calculate increase and decrease with a shell pattern of this type?

TIA
