Can anyone tell what kind of fish this is? Freshwater, stocked pond, Massachusetts. And how do we catch it?

Summary: from this terrible photo what kind of fish could we have seen? How do we catch it?

Details below.

My son and I were fishing yesterday (we’re beginners). It was 5pm sunny and warm out (mid 70s), we were fishing the shoreline of a local stocked pond. There were lots of smaller fish like sunnies near the shore.

While fishing we came across this enormous fish we kept trying to catch. It looked at least two feet long to me. My son thought it was an enormous large mouth bass. We named it “Big Beautiful.”

We’d get Big Beautiful’s attention with bait, but it would just kind of hang back and watch other fish, like sunfish, go for the bait (we used a lot of worms: big red and night crawlers and also tried Keitech Fat Swing Impact). It did take a small bite of the baitfish.

After losing interest it would retreat to a rock not far from shore (I suspect it lives in or around this spot). If something was interesting enough to come out for again, it would get close enough to seem curious but then decide no thanks.

We went back to the same spot this morning between 7-9 am with live shiners. Caught lots of large mouth bass, no sight of this monster.

How do we catch it? It would be like winning the world fishing Olympics for us.

Can anyone identify my 7-year-old’s self-taught 2x2 solving method?

I raced my son to finish the 2x2 and said I was timing him. He beat me (I’ve never even solved one) and finished in about 9 minutes. I watched him do it and as he was working on it he’d make progress and the he’d just scramble the whole thing and start over.

I asked why he did that and he said he was scanning all the sides to see how it could come together, making some moves and when he knew it “wouldn’t” come together right he’d just rescramble. He did seem to be getting to closer each time until he solved it. To me it looked like ruining his progress.

Is this a method others use to solve? Look at how easy the configuration is to solve from a given state and then scramble if it doesn’t look right or easy enough.

It looked like pure chaos then came together quickly.

My son’s interest is his new Rubik’s cube got me curious about trying to solve one too. I solved the first two layers without assistance. Should I try the third?

I did watch two parts of a how to solve video to help him try. Part one effectively said solve the white side but added a few steps I didn’t follow. Part 2 was literal gibberish and made me quit wanting to even try.

So here we are in part 3. I don’t want to spend absurd amounts of time trying to solve this by myself unless it’s intuitive enough.

Those of you who tried, when did it become obvious you needed the algorithms?

7 year old solved this 2x2 Rubik’s cube today. He says it was just luck, is that possible?

My son has a full Rubik’s cube he wanted to solve over the weekend. I finally gave in and said we could watch a tutorial (he’d been playing with it for a few weeks without any progress), but we only got to the white cross step before we ran out of time to keep trying.

The next day he found his 2x2 cube and was working on it for a bit. He had me try it yesterday, but I had no idea what I was doing. This morning he solved I think 2 sides. Tonight he spent maybe 20 more minutes on it and solved the whole thing.

I asked how he did it and he said oh I just turned a few sides and got lucky. Could it have been luck?
