Dominant hand stance for learning striking

I have most of my experience in Judo where typically if your right handed its right hand lead right foot lead, I plan on picking up more striking, but with the little bit of shadow boxing training I have done I have found similar experiences with both orthodox and southpaw stances. I did see somewhere that if strong ambidexterously then switch hit is an option by using both stances, but that adds complexity to the early learning stages.

With my strength being grappling and looking at developing a Sambo/MMA skillset should I focus on my strengths with Judo and learn southpaw to have my right lead hand, should I learn orthodox as someone who is slightly more right dominant (though mostly ambidexterous). Or just learn a bit of both, see if one stands out and if neither are weaker train switch hit?

Any advice would be great!

Body locks

Hey, I am a lighter fighter, 61.5kg M, I have found in rolls people quite often use body locks, the problem is they are 20kg heavier than me and a basic squeeze makes me nearly throw up. I am looking for ways to diminish this, I don't really know body lock defenses as against someone my weight they can't really body lock me. Does ab conditioning help? I just don't want to keep sitting out of rolls due to body locks leaving me feeling ill, and I can ask people to avoid body locks on me, but that just defers the problem to competitions.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Preparing for a Dan grading

Hi all,

I am going to my first competitive dan grading this Saturday, and it is also my first Judo competition... ever. I mainly would like some advice relating to competition intensity, the only grappling competitions I have done are 2 BJJ ones, in both I was caught by the difference in sparring and competition intensity. I was hoping for some advice in how I can moderate my intensity correctly, not going in too slow but also not going in like a "spazzy white belt" and getting easily countered, I am a pretty small fighter, 63kg M, so I probably can't set the pace particularly easily, especially if my opponents are 68-70kg.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

For a bit of additional context, this is the BJA Dan grading in High Wycombe on Saturday the 11th July.

High Wycombe Dan gradings

Hi, I saw there is an upcoming dan grading in High Wycombe, I wanted to ask whether any BJA judoka had attended this event before, and whether they know how many people tend to attend. I am a light weight (63kg male) and as such going to a higher attended event means I am more likely to have fights with people of similar size. Thank you!

Trying the castlevania games

Hi, I want to try out the castlevania games. I have a 3DS and Steam, so if the DS/3DS/Virtual console games are good that would be great as I can play them on the DS, but if theres specifically good steam games I can also try them? I just want to hear what people recommend as the best games in the franchise. I am looking partially for gameplay, but also the story and lore of the games. Thanks.

Judo vs BJJ vs Wrestling

I want to start a bit of a discussion.

I have done Judo for the last 11 years, I have done BJJ for the last 2 years. This is not supposed to be a discussion about which grappling arts are superior, but a discussion about why we do the sports we do, what benefits we find from crosstraining with different sports. And I want to get a bit of a discussion about peoples goals, do you crosstrain to become a well rounded grappler, do you crosstrain with striking to have a rounded out fighting skillset.

Lets chat!

Potentially starting Sambo

I want to ask about what I might expect if I try combat Sambo. I found out that a club has started in the City I go to university in, I have heard of Sambo before and was interested in doing an MMA adjacent sport like an MMA club, Kudo or Sambo. I would be starting in around September/October, so this is a bit early to inquire, but what sort of things could I expect in a Sambo class. I have 0 striking experience, I own 0 equipment other than a mouth guard, and while I have grappling experience from Judo my leg grab knowledge is very limited.

If you could give me a bit of an overview of your sport, and a bit of what to expect that would be great! And hopefully I will enjoy it when I give it a try in September!

Thank you.

Choking while within opponents guard

I am a judoka, but I enjoy Joshua Beams content, and I watched this video where he talked about the taboo of choking with juji jime or sode guruma jime from within the guard due to risking a sweep.

What I wanted to ask was peoples opinions on this rule, I quite often focus on choking from the guard in ne waza, I often find people expect you to focus on the legs and leave the neck exposed allowing many of these chokes, I had never heard the argument that they are risky before, and I really can't think of times I was swept due to focusing on the choke.

Interested in hearing some perspectives.

Thanks

Georgian grip advice

I have been quite liking the georgian grip for a while, but the only throw I knew how to do was hikikomi gaeshi, and beyond that I can only get the position from a regular over shoulder grip gets ducked giving me the georgian A position.

I want to build out my repetoire for the georgian grip, as I feel like its a very strong position to aim for and work from, so throws I should look into developping would be great to hear. I would also love advice for how to force the position more often, how do I seek the georgian grip to aim for these techniques. Finally I want some feedback on the "correct" body composition for georgian grip, I am a shorter lighter judoka, 62kg 5'8, so is this a system more used by heavy weights? Is it less applicable against people who outweigh me?

Thank you, any advice would be greatly appreciated, and either way its nice to have a chat on here! 😁

My first run in 8 months

The fastest 10k thing isnt fully accurate, but my PB is from before I got Strava at about 1:01.

Still, I really enjoyed it, a beautiful run across the beach front. I reckon its time to get back into it properly. Half marathon soon? Probably not, but we'll see.
