The story of how 2 pigeons completely stole my heart
I posted a pic earlier of my balcony pigeon, James, lying completely flat on her stomach. People in the comments were saying she looks sick and might die and honestly, hearing that absolutely crushed me. While I’m anxiously waiting and hoping she is okay, I just really needed to vent and write down how I became a pigeon lover in the first place.
Back in April 2025, my mom woke me up completely freaking out. A mama pigeon had just laid two eggs on our balcony. My mom, brother and i were all just panicking.
Imma be honest. at first I hated it. I’ve never been a bird person. It just felt like too much having new creatures suddenly living in our space. Plus, I’d always just heard pigeons were invasive. But it turned into this weird love-hate thing. Getting to watch these two little babies grow up was actually such a rare and cool experience. I got super attached and even started keeping a picture diary of them.
They pooped so much. One day, out of frustration, I randomly named them James and Stewart. Literally no reason, those names just popped into my head. (I actually only figured out their sex way later when I caught them mating recently) I watched them every single day until they learned how to flutter their wings, making sure they had a shelter and whatever else they needed. They finally started flying and left the nest for a bit.
But even after they grew up, they kept coming back to our apartment. I live in Canada so winters are brutal and we didn't see them as much during the cold months. But occasionally, they’d leave these tiny little footprints in the snow lol. It was so cute.
Now, a year later, pigeons are basically all I think about. I wake up in the morning and my first thought is are they here?. I go to sleep wondering where they're resting. If I’m out of my apartment, I'm wondering if they’re here. My mom is home a lot, so whenever they're here, she immediately takes pictures and sends them to me. I take a million photos too, so my camera roll is basically just a massive pigeon dump.
James was perfectly fine the day before, so hearing that she might suddenly die feels like my world is collapsing. I haven't had any updates yet, but I am just praying she is safe. I honestly don't know how I'll handle it if something bad happens to her. I just really wanted to share how these guys totally stole my heart. Thank you for reading. I'll leave a few of my favorite pics of them. They really brought so much joy to me.
